Complex systems in the spotlight: next steps after the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics
                        
                    
    
            Abstract The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized the fundamental role of complex systems in the natural sciences. In order to celebrate this milestone, this editorial presents the point of view of the editorial board of JPhys Complexity on the achievements, challenges, and future prospects of the field. To distinguish the voice and the opinion of each editor, this editorial consists of a series of editor perspectives and reflections on few selected themes. A comprehensive and multi-faceted view of the field of complexity science emerges. We hope and trust that this open discussion will be of inspiration for future research on complex systems.

            null (Ed.)We describe a tangible block editor for the educational programming language Scratch that allows blind and visually impaired (BVI) students to learn computer programming concepts alongside their sighted peers in mainstream classrooms. In this late breaking work, we provide a description of the design that incorporates many of the key elements of the Scratch visual code editor that promote engagement and lower hurdles to programming. The environment allows a BVI student to work collaboratively with other BVI and sighted students, being accessible to all. Key elements of the design include: the use of magnets and local shape to ensure only blocks with valid syntax can be connected, the allowance of nested expressions through expansion of code structures with telescoping tubing, and a channel grid work surface that provides structure to aid students working with the much narrower field of view of haptics, as compared to vision.more » « less

            Abstract This is a roadmap article with multiple contributors on different aspects of embodying intelligence and computing in the mechanical domain of functional materials and structures. Overall, an IOP roadmap article is a broad, multi-author review with leaders in the field discussing the latest developments, commissioned by the editorial board. The intention here is to cover various topics of adaptive structural and material systems with mechano-intelligence in the overall roadmap, with twelve sections in total. These sections cover topics from materials to devices to systems, such as computational metamaterials, neuromorphic materials, mechanical and material logic, mechanical memory, soft matter computing, physical reservoir computing, wave-based computing, morphological computing, mechanical neural networks, plant-inspired intelligence, pneumatic logic circuits, intelligent robotics, and embodying mechano-intelligence for engineering functionalities via physical computing. In this paper, we view all the 2-page sections with equal contributions to the overall roadmap article and thus list the authorship on the front page via alphabetical order of their last names. On the other hand, for each individual section, the authors decide on their own the order of authorship.more » « less

            Artificial Intelligence (AI) and citizen science (CS) are two approaches to tackling data challenges related to scale and complexity. CS by its very definition relies on the joint effort of typically a distributed group of non-expert people to solve problems in a manner that relies on human intelligence. As AI capabilities increasingly augment or complement human intelligence, if not replicate it, there is a growing effort to understand the role that AI can play in CS and vice versa. With this growing interest as context, this special collection, The Future of AI and Citizen Science, illustrates the many ways that CS practitioners are integrating AI into their efforts, as well as identifies current limitations. In this spirit, our editorial briefly introduces the special collection papers to demonstrate and assess some uses of AI in CS; then, we contextualize these uses in terms of key challenges; and conclude with future directions that use AI with CS in both innovative and ethical ways.more » « less
