Abstract 2 a ,2 b ) and anion (3 a ,3 b ) complexes, which have been synthesized by potassium graphite (KC8) reduction of cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene‐dibenzo[b,d]borepin precursors. Borepin radicals and anions have been characterized by EPR or NMR, elemental analysis, X‐ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the bonding features have been investigated computationally using density functional theory. -
Abstract A new series of mono‐ and bis‐alkynyl CoIII(TIM) complexes (TIM=2,3,9,10‐tetramethyl‐1,4,8,11‐tetraazacyclotetradeca‐1,3,8,10‐tetraene) is reported herein. The
trans ‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)Cl]+complexes were prepared from the reaction betweentrans ‐[Co(TIM)Cl2]PF6and HC2R (R=tri(isopropyl)silyl or TIPS (1 ), ‐C6H4‐4‐tBu (2 ), ‐C6H4‐4‐NO2(3 a ), andN ‐mesityl‐1,8‐naphthalimide or NAPMes(4 a )) in the presence of Et3N. The intermediate complexes of the typetrans ‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)(NCMe)](PF6)(OTf),3 b and4 b , were obtained by treating3 a and4 a , respectively, with AgOTf in CH3CN. Furthermore, bis‐alkynyltrans ‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)2]PF6complexes,3 c and4 c , were generated following a second dehydrohalogenation reaction between3 b and4 b , respectively, and the appropriate HC2R in the presence of Et3N. These new complexes have been characterized using X‐ray diffraction (2 ,3 a ,4 a , and4 c ), IR,1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopy (4 c ), and cyclic voltammetry. -

Abstract Described here is a direct entry to two examples of 3d transition metal catalysts that are active for the cyclic polymerization of phenylacetylene, namely, [(BDI)M{κ2‐
C ,C ‐(Me3SiC3SiMe3)}] (2‐M ) (BDI=[ArNC(CH3)]2CH−, Ar=2,6‐i Pr2C6H3;M =Ti, V ). Catalysts are prepared in one step by the treatment of [(BDI)MCl2] (1‐M ,M =Ti ,V ) with 1,3‐dilithioallene [Li2(Me3SiC3SiMe3)]. Complexes2‐M have been spectroscopically and structurally characterized and the polymers that are catalytically formed from phenylacetylene were verified to have a cyclic topology based on a combination of size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC) and intrinsic viscosity studies. Two‐electron oxidation of2‐V with nitrous oxide (N2O) cleanly yields a [VV] alkylidene‐alkynyl oxo complex [(BDI)V(=O){κ1‐C ‐(=C(SiMe3)CC(SiMe3))}] (3 ), which lends support for how this scaffold in2‐M might be operating in the polymerization of the terminal alkyne. This work demonstrates how alkylidynes can be circumvented using 1,3‐dianionic allene as a segue into M−C multiple bonds. -
Abstract Reduction of the cobalt(II) chloride complex, Ph2B(tBuIm)2Co(THF)Cl (
1 ) in the presence oftBuN≡C affords the diamagnetic, square planar cobalt(I) complex Ph2B(tBuIm)2Co(C≡NtBu)2(2 ). This is a rare example of a 16‐electron cobalt(I) complex that is structurally related to square planar noble metal complexes. Accordingly, the electronic structure of2 , as calculated by DFT, reveals that the HOMO is largely dz 2in character. Complex2 is readily oxidized to its cobalt(II) congener [Ph2B(tBuIm)2Co(C=NtBu)2]BPh4(3 ‐BPh4), whose EPR spectral parameters are characteristic of low‐spin d7with an unpaired electron in an orbital of dz 2parentage. This is also consistent with the results of DFT calculations. Despite its 16‐electron configuration and the dz2parentage of the HOMO, the only tractable reactions of2 involve one electron oxidation to afford3 . -
Abstract Density functional theory has been used to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of the regeneration of ammonia‐borane (H3B−NH3,
AB ) from polyborazylene (BxNxHx,PBz ) in the presence of hydrazine (H2N−NH2,Hz ). Herein, borazine (B3N3H6,Bz ) is used as the simplest relevant model ofPBz for the regeneration process. Digestion ofBz usingHz was found to occur by a string of Lewis acid base adduct (between B atoms ofBz andHz molecule) formation andHz assisted proton transfer processes. Later, B−H bonds of HB(NHNH2)2, theBz digested product, are redistributed to form hydrazine‐borane (H3B−NH2NH2,HzB ) and B(NHNH2)3. Redistribution of B−H bonds occurs through hydroboration and concerted proton‐hydride transfer. Another B−H redistributed product, B(NHNH2)3, producesHzB as a result of proton and hydride transfer from cis‐diazene (Dz ), the oxidized product ofHz in presence of O2.
