Title: Focus on conceptual ideas in quantum mechanics for teacher training
Abstract In this work, we describe strategies and provide case-study activities that can be used to examine the properties of superposition, entanglement, tagging, complementarity, and measurement in quantum curricula geared for teacher training. Having a solid foundation in these conceptual ideas is critical for educators who will be adopting quantum ideas within the classroom. Yet they are some of the most difficult concepts to master. We show how one can systematically develop these conceptual foundations with thought experiments on light and with thought experiments that employ the Stern-Gerlach experiment. We emphasize the importance of computer animations in aiding the instruction on these concepts.  more » « less

    Measurement uncertainty and experimental error are important concepts taught in undergraduate physics laboratories. Although student ideas about error and uncertainty in introductory classical mechanics lab experiments have been studied extensively, there is relatively limited research on student thinking about experimental measurement uncertainty in quantum mechanics. In this work, we used semi-structured interviews to study advanced physics students’ interpretations of fictitious data distributions from two common undergraduate laboratory experiments in quantum mechanics and one in classical mechanics. To analyze these interpretations, we developed a coding scheme that classifies student responses based on what factors they believe create un- certainty and differentiates between different types of uncertainty (e.g. imprecision, inaccuracy). We found that participants in our study expressed a variety of ideas about measurement uncertainty that varied with the context (classical/quantum) and the type of uncertainty.

  2. Recently there have been calls to integrate engineering design experiences to support students’ scientific understanding. There is a need for instructional strategies in which learners are encouraged to identify and reflect on ways scientific principles can be applied to inform their designs and evaluate alternative designs. Studies show that the inclusion of contrasting cases can improve students’ conceptual understanding and reasoning. Yet, such tasks depend on how they are scaffolded. In this study, pre-service elementary teachers in a conceptual physics course analyzed contrasting solutions to a design problem. Two forms of scaffolds were embedded to facilitate case evaluation: 1) identify similarities and differences and 2) evaluate and produce an argument for a “good” design solution. We investigated the scientific ideas that the participants used as they contrasted multiple design solutions and the impact of the two approaches in students’ understanding of heat transfer. We found no significant differences in students’ conceptual understanding, but the argumentation condition had a significantly larger number of scientific ideas ‘cited’, ‘explained’ or ‘applied’ in their solutions,. The results suggest that contrasting designs with argumentation may be a promising intervention to facilitate students to use science concepts in engineering design. Future work is needed in order to investigate better scaffolds that can help students’ increase in conceptual learning.

  4. National data have shown the need to expand and diversify the talent pool of the quantum technologies workforce. This article describes a newly designed 25-h summer quantum information science and technology (QIST) program for high school students in grades 10–12; the goal is to advance physical science literacy and diversify the STEM pipeline through novel quantum science and quantum computing access and learning. This partnership between Stony Brook University and the New York Hall of Science was designed by quantum physicists and physics education researchers. This manuscript describes the rationale and progression of quantum ideas and computing skills introduced in the outreach program. The program design scaffolded physics, mathematics, and computer science concepts to engage high school students in the excitement of quantum information science and technology fields. The disciplinary content included the limitations of classical computing, classical and quantum physics principles (diffraction, polarization, wave-particle duality), the Mach–Zehnder interferometer, superposition, quantum thought experiments (Schrödinger's cat and Wigner's friend), entanglement and Bell's inequality, quantum key distribution, and basic quantum computing skills. Students also spent time visiting laboratories and museum exhibits and learning about academic progressions and career pathways in quantum technologies. This university-based science outreach model may be replicated by other quantum educators and adapted for learning in formal contexts.

Quantum computing presents a paradigmatic shift in the field of computation, in which unintuitive properties of quantum mechanics can be harnessed to change the way we approach a wide range of problems. However, due to the mathematics and physics perspective through which quantum computing is traditionally presented, most resources are inaccessible to many undergraduate students, let alone the general public. It is thus imperative to develop resources and best-practices for quantum computing instruction accessible to students at all levels. In this paper, we describe the development and results of our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) "Introduction to Quantum Computing for Everyone." This course presents an introduction to quantum computing with few technical prerequisites. In the first half of the course, quantum computing concepts are introduced with a unique, purely visual representation, allowing students to develop conceptual understanding without the burden of learning new mathematical notation. In the second half, students are taught the formal notation for concepts and objects already introduced, reinforcing student understanding of these concepts and providing an applicable context for the technical material. Most notably, we find that introducing the math content in the curriculum's second stage led to no drops in engagement or student performance, suggesting that our curriculum's spiral structure eased the technical burden.
