Image data plays a pivotal role in the current data-driven era, particularly in applications such as computer vision, object recognition, and facial identification. Google Maps ® stands out as a widely used platform that heavily relies on street view images. To fulfill the pressing need for an effective and distributed mechanism for image data collection, we present a framework that utilizes smart contract technology and open-source robots to gather street-view image sequences. The proposed framework also includes a protocol for maintaining these sequences using a private blockchain capable of retaining different versions of street views while ensuring the integrity of collected data. With this framework, Google Maps ® data can be securely collected, stored, and published on a private blockchain. By conducting tests with actual robots, we demonstrate the feasibility of the framework and its capability to seamlessly upload privately maintained blockchain image sequences to Google Maps ® using the Google Street View ® Publish API.

Decentralized Data Collection via Swarm Contracts: Study on Crowd-Sourced Google Maps
“Data is the new oil” has become a popular catch-phrase in the world of technology, emphasizing the immense value of data in today's digital age. Most services and platforms rely on data, but collecting this data can be challenging and costly. To address this issue, we leverage a novel distributed crowdsourcing framework - termed Swarm Contracts - that utilizes blockchain and is applied to robotics technologies. The framework encourages an incentivized crowdsourcing model through open-source robots and a secure, decentralized, and transparent blockchain-based incentive system. As a demonstration of the framework's capabilities, we use it to collect Google Street View ® map data, which can be a resource-intensive task to keep up to date using traditional centralized methods. Our Swarm Contract framework uses Google Street View ® Publish API, which allows for the contribution of street view data to Google Maps @to implement the incentive-based crowdsourcing of street view images. By incorporating a swarm contract-powered framework with the Google Street View ® Publish API, we show that the incentivized crowdsourcing of street view data can be a practical solution to maintain accurate and up-to-date Google Street View ® maps.

Santiago, J. (Ed.)The storefront accessibility can substantially impact the way people who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) travel in urban environments. Entrance localization is one of the biggest challenges to the BVI people. In addition, improperly designed staircases and obstructive store decorations can create considerable mobility challenges for BVI people, making it more difficult for them to navigate their community hence reducing their desire to travel. Unfortunately, there are few approaches to acquiring this information in advance through computational tools or services. In this paper, we propose a solution to collect large- scale accessibility data of New York City (NYC) storefronts using a crowdsourcing approach on Google Street View (GSV) panoramas. We develop a web-based crowdsourcing application, DoorFront, which enables volunteers not only to remotely label storefront accessibility data on GSV images, but also to validate the labeling result to ensure high data quality. In order to study the usability and user experience of our application, an informal beta-test is conducted and a user experience survey is designed for testing volunteers. Mosa, Ahmed Mancy (Ed.)Street View Images (SVI) are a common source of valuable data for researchers. Researchers have used SVI data for estimating pedestrian volumes, demographic surveillance, and to better understand built and natural environments in cityscapes. However, the most common source of publicly available SVI data is Google Street View. Google Street View images are collected infrequently, making temporal analysis challenging, especially in low population density areas. Our main contribution is the development of an open-source data pipeline for processing 360-degree video recorded from a car-mounted camera. The video data is used to generate SVIs, which then can be used as an input for longitudinal analysis. We demonstrate the use of the pipeline by collecting an SVI dataset over a 38-month longitudinal survey of Seattle, WA, USA during the COVID-19 pandemic. The output of our pipeline is validated through statistical analyses of pedestrian traffic in the images. We confirm known results in the literature and provide new insights into outdoor pedestrian traffic patterns. This study demonstrates the feasibility and value of collecting and using SVI for research purposes beyond what is possible with currently available SVI data. Our methods and dataset represent a first of its kind longitudinal collection and application of SVI data for research purposes. Limitations and future improvements to the data pipeline and case study are also discussed.more » « less

Blockchain technology, recognized for its decentralized and privacy-preserving capabilities, holds potential for enhancing privacy in contact tracing applications. Existing blockchain-based contact tracing frameworks often overlook one or more critical design details, such as the blockchain data structure, a decentralized and lightweight consensus mechanism with integrated tracing data verification, and an incentive mechanism to encourage voluntary participation in bearing blockchain costs. Moreover, the absence of framework simulations raises questions about the efficacy of these existing models. To solve above issues, this article introduces a fully third-party independent blockchain-driven contact tracing (BDCT) framework, detailed in its design. The BDCT framework features an RivestShamir-Adleman (RSA) encryption-based transaction verification method (RSA-TVM), achieving over 96% accuracy in contact case recording, even with a 60% probability of individuals failing to verify contact information. Furthermore, we propose a lightweight reputation corrected delegated proof of stake (RCDPoS) consensus mechanism, coupled with an incentive model, to ensure timely reporting of contact cases while maintaining blockchain decentralization. Additionally, a novel simulation environment for contact tracing is developed, accounting for three distinct contact scenarios with varied population density. Our results and discussions validate the effectiveness, robustness of the RSA-TVM and RC-DPoS, and the low storage demand of the BDCT framework.more » « less

As a foundational and disruptive technology with unique features, blockchains can provide distinct technology pushes for novel business models, strategies, processes, and applications. Revised or new business models can be iteratively refined and transformed to increasingly more detailed design and implementation models to be realized by applications supported by blockchains. Governance concerns with how decisions are made, implemented, and controlled. It is an important focal point of any model and process. Blockchain enables new governance opportunities that are trusted, decentralized, automated, accountable, secured, and privacy-protected. These opportunities can be used to analyze governance issues in constructing models, processes, and blockchain applications. Based on our prototyping experience in two permissioned blockchain platforms, we propose a framework of six governance attributes for constructing consortium blockchain applications: decision process, accountability and verifiability, trust, incentive, security and privacy, and effectiveness. The framework aids in exploring blockchain-created governance opportunities and driving future research.more » « less
