Abstract Copy number variation (CNV) is a major part of the genetic diversity segregating within populations, but remains poorly understood relative to single nucleotide variation. Here, we report on atRNAligase gene (Migut.N02091;RLG1a) exhibiting unprecedented, and fitness‐relevant,CNVwithin an annual population of the yellow monkeyflowerMimulus guttatus.RLG1a variation was associated with multiple traits in pooled population sequencing (PoolSeq) scans of phenotypic and phenological cohorts. Resequencing of inbred lines revealed intermediate‐frequency three‐copy variants ofRLG1a (trip+;5/35 = 14%), andtrip+lines exhibited elevatedRLG1a expression under multiple conditions.trip+carriers, in addition to being over‐represented in late‐flowering and large‐flowered PoolSeq populations, flowered later under stressful conditions in a greenhouse experiment (p < 0.05). In wild population samples, we discovered an additional rareRLG1a variant (high+) that carries 250–300 copies ofRLG1a totalling ~5.7 Mb (20–40% of a chromosome). In the progeny of ahigh+carrier, Mendelian segregation of diagnostic alleles andqPCR‐based copy counts indicate thathigh+is a single tandem array unlinked to the single‐copyRLG1a locus. In the wild,high+carriers had highest fitness in two particularly dry and/or hot years (2015 and 2017; bothp < 0.01), while single‐copy individuals were twice as fecund as eitherCNVtype in a lush year (2016:p < 0.005). Our results demonstrate fluctuating selection onCNVs affecting phenological traits in a wild population, suggest that planttRNAligases mediate stress‐responsive life‐history traits, and introduce a novel system for investigating the molecular mechanisms of gene amplification.

            Abstract Ecologists—especially those new to the field—are tasked with finding relevant literature matching their research interests and deciding upon a suitable venue for the publication of their work. To provide a roadmap for early career researchers to identify journals aligned with their interests, we analyzed major research themes found across the top 30 ecology journals and three high‐impact multi‐disciplinary journals (Nature, PNAS,andScience), utilizing an automated content analysis (ACA) of 84,841 article abstracts, titles, and author keywords published over the last four decades. Journals clustered into 10 distinct groups based on 46 research themes identified byACA. We examined the frequency of ecological themes in each of these journal groups to identify the journals most associated with each theme. We found three themes (anthropogenic impacts, disease,andtraits) that occurred at a high frequency in the high‐impact multi‐disciplinary journal group containingNature, PNAS,andScience. Themes that increased in frequency over the last four decades, such asclimate change, traits, anthropogenic, andcellular biology, were found more often in journals with higher impact factors, indicating that emerging research themes in ecology will likely become of interest to a broader readership over time. Our study provides a thematic review as a potential roadmap for junior ecologists to browse and publish journal articles.

            Abstract The utility of plant functional traits for predictive ecology relies on our ability to interpret trait variation across multiple taxonomic and ecological scales. Using extensive data sets of trait variation within species, across species and across communities, we analysed whether and at what scales leaf economics spectrum (LES) traits show predicted trait–trait covariation. We found that most variation inLEStraits is often, but not universally, at high taxonomic levels (between families or genera in a family). However, we found that trait covariation shows distinct taxonomic scale dependence, with some trait correlations showing opposite signs within vs. across species.LEStraits responded independently to environmental gradients within species, with few shared environmental responses across traits or across scales. We conclude that, at small taxonomic scales, plasticity may obscure or reverse the broad evolutionary linkages between leaf traits, meaning that variation inLEStraits cannot always be interpreted as differences in resource use strategy.more » « less

            ABSTRACT Coalescent modelling of hybrid zones can provide novel insights into the historical demography of populations, including divergence times, population sizes, introgression proportions, migration rates and the timing of hybrid zone formation. We used coalescent analysis to determine whether the hybrid zone between phylogeographic lineages of the Plateau Fence Lizard (Sceloporus tristichus) in Arizona formed recently due to human‐induced landscape changes, or if it originated during Pleistocene climatic shifts. Given the presence of mitochondrial DNA from another species in the hybrid zone (Southwestern Fence Lizard,S. cowlesi), we tested for the presence ofS. cowlesinuclear DNA in the hybrid zone as well as reassessed the species boundary betweenS. tristichusandS. cowlesi. No evidence ofS. cowlesinuclear DNA is found in the hybrid zone, and the paraphyly of both species raises concerns about their taxonomic validity. Introgression analysis placed the divergence time between the parental hybrid zone populations at approximately 140 kya and their secondary contact and hybridization at approximately 11 kya at the end of the Pleistocene. Introgression proportions estimated for hybrid populations are correlated with their geographic distance from parental populations. The multispecies coalescent with migration provided significant support for unidirectional migration moving from south to north, which is consistent with spatial cline analyses that suggest a slow but steady northward shift of the centre of the hybrid zone over the last two decades. When analysing hybrid populations sampled along a linear transect, coalescent methods can provide novel insights into hybrid zone dynamics.more » « less

            Abstract The genusPinushas wide geographical range and includes species that are the most economically valued among forest trees worldwide. Pine needle length varies greatly among species, but the effects of needle length on anatomy, function, and coordination and trade‐offs among traits are poorly understood. We examined variation in leaf morphological, anatomical, mechanical, chemical, and physiological characteristics among five southern pine species:Pinus echinata,Pinus elliottii,Pinus palustris,Pinus taeda, andPinus virginiana. We found that increasing needle length contributed to a trade‐off between the relative fractions of support versus photosynthetic tissue (mesophyll) across species. From the shortest (7 cm) to the longest (36 cm) needles, mechanical tissue fraction increased by 50%, whereas needle dry density decreased by 21%, revealing multiple adjustments to a greater need for mechanical support in longer needles. We also found a fourfold increase in leaf hydraulic conductance over the range of needle length across species, associated with weaker upward trends in stomatal conductance and photosynthetic capacity. Our results suggest that the leaf size strongly influences their anatomical traits, which, in turn, are reflected in leaf mechanical support and physiological capacity.more » « less

            ABSTRACT Plant functional traits are vital tools in ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation. While functional traits and functional diversity are increasingly being used to inform restoration efforts, challenges remain in the characterization of trait variation in many systems, including within‐species. Likewise, understanding axes of trait variation describing trade‐offs in plant function is important for trait‐based restoration frameworks, yet the degree of coordination between above‐ground functional traits and their below‐ ground counterparts is often unknown. Here, we investigate intraspecific trait variation among five populations ofSchizachyrium scoparium(little bluestem), a species commonly used for restoration, from different habitat types across a gradient from southern Wisconsin to Northern Illinois. We asked (1) how regional populations ofS. scopariumdiffer in their functional traits, (2) how functional trait variation inS. scopariumis structured among and within populations, and (3) how above‐ and below‐ground functional traits ofS. scopariumcoordinate and describe axes of functional trade‐offs. We found that populations differed in multivariate trait space, but evidence for differences in individual traits among populations was mixed. Trait relationships with habitat types were idiosyncratic and often misaligned with expectations of plant economic spectra. Variation within populations was as high, or higher, than between populations across traits. We found evidence for weak coordination in several trait pairs, including two above‐ and below‐ground trait combinations, while others appeared to be uncoordinated. Our findings support previous research that trait differentiation can occur at multiple scales, both between and within populations. Extensive within‐population trait variability could be leveraged in trait‐based restoration frameworks targeting intraspecific functional diversity. The lack of strong signals of coordination between above‐ and below‐ground functional traits suggest that sourcing decisions meant to match below‐ground functional traits to recipient restored communities should rely on direct measurement of root traits associated with desired functions rather than above‐ground proxies.more » « less
