The structures of glasses in the lithium–bismuth orthoborate composition range deviate significantly from the short‐range order structure of the two crystalline end‐members. Although binary Li3BO3and BiBO3are solely of comprised trigonal orthoborate anions, all glasses formed by their combination contain four‐coordinated borate tetrahedra. We analyze the structure of (75−1.5

Abstract x )Li2O–x Bi2O3–(25+0.5x )B2O3glasses in increments ofx = 5, with11B magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and Raman spectroscopy. For the full series, the oxygen‐to‐boron ratio remains constant at O/B = 3:1. NMR quantifies an increase in the fraction of tetrahedral boron with increasing bismuth oxide content. Evolution of the mid‐IR profile suggests multiple types of tetrahedral boron sites. Raman spectroscopy reveals that Bi2O3tends to cluster within the lithium borate matrix when initially introduced and that this behavior transforms into a bismuthate network with increasing bismuth oxide content. In all cases, mixed Bi–O–B linkages are observed. The dual role of bismuth as network modifier and network former is likewise observed in the far IR. The glass transition temperature continuously increases with bismuth oxide content; however, the glass stability displays a maximum in the multicomponent glass ofx = 40. -
Mixed modifier effect in Na 2 O·K 2 O·CaO aluminosilicate glasses: Pairwise and ternary interactions
Abstract The mixed modifier effect (MME) is one of the most challenging puzzles in the field of oxide glasses, as there exists no universal quantitative theoretical model for accurately describing and predicting the nonlinear deviation of property values. In this paper, pairwise and ternary interactions are examined experimentally to understand the MME in a series of aluminosilicate glasses. By keeping the glass network former concentration constant and adjusting the molar ratios of three network modifiers (Na2O, K2O, and CaO), the MMEs in glass transition temperature (
T g), Vickers hardness (H v), and activation energy (E a) for aqueous dissolution for each modifier cation are investigated. We examine whether a pairwise interaction model is sufficient, or if ternary interactions also need to be included to predict the MME in these aluminosilicate glass systems. This work reveals that the pairwise model can be used to predict the MME forT gin complex multiple‐modifier glass systems using only two‐body interaction factors. However, ternary mixed‐modifier interactions are present in other properties such asH vandE a. -
Abstract Raman scattering is a powerful probe of
local structure (LS) of glasses. In Sodium Phosphate Glasses (SPGs), we show that bothLS composed of Qnspecies andExtended Range Structures (ERS) composed of Long Chains (LCs), Large Rings (LRs), and Small Rings (SRs) can be decoded by Raman scattering. The trimodal distribution of P‐Oterminalstretch modes of Q2species and P‐Obridgingatx < 50% are manifestations of theseERS . These two pairs of triads of modes are uniquely identified with Q2units present in either LCs, or LRs, or SRs. The existence three phases of c‐NaPO3composed of 3‐membered rings, 6‐membered rings, and infinitely long chains has facilitated the identification. The Intermediate Phase (IP) in SPGs extends in the 37.5 <x < 46.0% range, the Stressed‐rigid Phase in the 46.0% <x < 50%, and the Flexible Phase in the 18% <x < 37.5% range of soda. We show the IP consists predominantly of LCs (82%), with a minority of LRs (15%) and SRs (3%). The LR‐ and SR‐fractions increase measurably in the non‐IP phases. The structural finding is in harmony with the high configurational entropy of the IP glasses that leads aging to be qualitatively suppressed. -
Growths of monoclinic (Al
x Ga1−x )2O3thin films up to 99% Al contents are demonstrated via metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using trimethylgallium (TMGa) as the Ga precursor. The utilization of TMGa, rather than triethylgallium, enables a significant improvement of the growth rates (>2.5 μm h−1) of β‐(Alx Ga1−x )2O3thin films on (010), (100), and (01) β‐Ga2O3substrates. By systematically tuning the precursor molar flow rates, growth of coherently strained phase pure β‐(Alx Ga1−x )2O3films is demonstrated by comprehensive material characterizations via high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging. Monoclinic (Alx Ga1−x )2O3films with Al contents up to 99, 29, and 16% are achieved on (100), (010), and (01) β‐Ga2O3substrates, respectively. Beyond 29% of Al incorporation, the (010) (Alx Ga1−x )2O3films exhibit β‐ to γ‐phase segregation. β‐(Alx Ga1−x )2O3films grown on (01) β‐Ga2O3show local segregation of Al along (100) plane. Record‐high Al incorporations up to 99% in monoclinic (Alx Ga1−x )2O3grown on (100) Ga2O3are confirmed from XRD, STEM, electron nanodiffraction, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. These results indicate great promises of MOCVD development of β‐(Alx Ga1−x )2O3films and heterostructures with high Al content and growth rates using TMGa for next‐generation high‐power and high‐frequency electronic devices. -
Abstract The current study shows a new attempt to develop gamma‐ray shielding glasses. The proposed glass is a borate‐base composition modified with sodium and cadmium oxides and different concentrations of bismuth oxide. Based on the melt‐quenching technique, we prepared four glass compositions of 20NaO‐15CdO‐ (65−
x )B2O3‐x Bi2O3, wherex = 0, 10, 20, and 30 mol%. The amorphous nature of the prepared samples was confirmed by XRD. To get more details about the structure, FTIR and UV‐Vis‐NIR were performed to characterize the prepared glasses. Moreover, we used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to create the possible structures of the new compositions, and compared with the experimental measurements. A series of shielding parameters was investigated based on the gamma‐ray emission in the range of 0.01‐10 MeV. The results revealed an improvement of the shielding parameters with increasing of Bi2O3content. The sample with the highest Bi2O3(S4) has the highestZ effand least HVL, while S1 (with no Bi2O3content) has the lowestZ effat all energy levels. The gamma‐ray transmission factor of the prepared glasses was compared with some commercial concretes. Finally, the new glasses especially with highest Bi2O3are recommended to use in gamma radiation shielding facilities.
