Title: Clustering Partner Agencies for a Local Food Bank
Food insecurity is a serious problem in America and the pandemic makes the problem even worse. Feeding America has more than 200 food banks. that These food banks and their partner agencies are the key players in the battle against food insecurity. Partner agencies may vary in size and location depending on the service area and the variety of the partner agencies and the complexities of their operations make equitable food distribution very challenging. There is a need for a meaningful to group those partner agencies to assist food bank operations managers to make informed decisions. This study uses data from a local food bank and its partner agencies. Each agency is unique in terms of its behavior. Therefore, k-means clustering was used to categorize agencies into groups based on the number of persons served and the amount of food received. The results of the study will provide evidence-based information to assist the food bank in making informed decisions.  more » « less

    Food insecurity is a social and economic condition where an individual or household have difficulty to obtain safe and nutritious food. Food insecurity in America is a serious issue given that more than 30 million people in America are food insecure. The complex nature of the problem cannot be address by federal nutrition assistance programs alone. Non-profit hunger relief organizations also play a significant role. Feeding America is the nation’s largest hunger relief organization and has over 200 affiliated food banks. Those food banks used to focus on providing emergency food assistance, more and more are paying more attention to the needs and preferences of the people they serve and provide culturally relevant food and food that meets the dietary and other health considerations. Working with a local food bank and its affiliated partner agencies, neighbor preference data were collected. An interactive dashboard was developed to allow decision-makers of the food bank to make evidence-based informed decisions in complex hunger relief operations such as food procurement and distribution.

    Fleet maintenance is the process fleet manager utilizes to manage fleet and asset information from acquisition to disposal. It helps the companies reduce costs, improve efficiency and safety. Second Harvest of Metrolina Food Bank (SHMETROLINA) distributed over 70 million pounds of food and household items to approximately 800 partner agencies in 2019. With the critical need for transportation for distribution, a vehicle experiencing downtime will disrupt scheduled routes to partner agencies and increase repair costs for SHMETROLINA. This research developed an interactive dashboard using R shiny to help non-profit food bank fleet managers make informed decisions for effective fleet maintenance operations and support the food bank operations to meet hunger needs. The dashboard consists of the visualizations of the maintenance cost, mileage, and operational cost for individual and fleet vehicles from the data collected by the food bank.

    According to Feeding America, prior to the pandemic, 1 in 5 African-American/Black, 1 in 6 Hispanic, and 1 in 4 Native American households were food insecure compared to 1 in 11 White households. The pandemic is expected to exacerbate these disparities given its disproportionate economic and health impact on historically marginalized racial and ethnic populations. Food banks are non-profit organizations that work to alleviate food insecurity within their service regions by distributing donated food to households in need. Equitable distribution of donated food is an important criteria for food banks. Existing food banking operations literature primarily focus on geographic equity, i.e., where each geographic block of a food bank's service region receives food in proportion to its demand. However, hunger-relief organizations such as food banks are gradually incorporating demography-based equity in their distribution of donated food in light of the disparities that exist within different demographic groups, such as race, age, and religion. However, the notion of demographic equity has not received attention in the food banking operations literature. This study aims to fill in the gap by developing a multi-criteria optimization model to identify optimal distribution policies for a food bank considering a two-dimensional equity criterion, geographic and demographic, in the presence of effectiveness (undistributed food minimization) and efficiency (distribution cost minimization) criteria. We apply the model to our partner food bank's data to (i) explore the trade-off between geographic and demographic equity as a function of effectiveness, and efficiency, and (ii) identify policy insights.

    Food insecurity is defined as an individual or household’s inability or limited access to safe and nutritious food that every person in the household need for an active, healthy life. In this research, we apply visual analytics, the integration of data analytics and interactive visualization, to provide evidence-based decision-making for a local food bank to better understand the people and communities in its service area and improve the reach and impact of the food bank. We have identified the indicators of the need, rates of usage, and other factors related to the general accessibility of the food bank and its programs. Interactive dashboards were developed to allow decision-makers of the food bank to combine their field knowledge with the computing power to make evidence-based informed decisions in complex hunger relief operations.

    Food banks are key players in the fight against hunger. The complexity of the food bank operations data makes decision-making very challenging. Data visualization can allow food bank operations managers to quickly and easily understand the data and make evidence-based decisions. However, poorly designed visualizations could be confusing and/or misleading. This study uses eye-tracking technology to understand how users interact with various food bank data visualizations and use eye-tracking data to better design those visualizations. The findings of this study will have an impact on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the food bank operations.
