Title: Optically active bis(aminophenols) and their metal complexes
Optically active C 2 -symmetric bis(aminophenols) based on ( R )-2,2′-diaminobinaphthyl (BiniqH 4 ) and ( R , R )-2,3-butanediyldianthranilate (BdanH 4 ) have been prepared by condensation of the diamines with 3,5-di- tert -butylcatechol. Group 10 bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes ( R )-(Biniq)M (M = Pd, Pt) and ( C , R , R )-(Bdan)Pd have been prepared by oxidatively metalating the corresponding ligands. In ( R )-(Biniq)M, the C 2 axis passes through the approximate square plane of the bis(iminosemiquinone)metal core, while in ( C , R , R )-(Bdan)Pd the C 2 axis is perpendicular to this plane. In the latter compound, the ( R , R )-butanediyl strap binds selectively over one enantioface of the metal complex in a conformation where the methyl groups are anti to one another. Osmium oxo complexes with the intrinsically chiral OsO(amidophenoxide) 2 chromophore are obtained by metalation of OsO(OCH 2 CH 2 O) 2 with ( R , R )-BdanH 4 . Both the ( A , R , R ) and ( C , R , R ) diastereomers can be observed, with metalation in refluxing toluene selectively giving the latter isomer. The electronic structures of the complexes are illuminated by the circular dichroism spectra, in conjuction with the optical spectra and TDDFT calculations.  more » « less

  1. A series of Ni( ii ), Pd( ii ) and Pt( ii ) complexes [ML][PF 6 ] 2 [L = L 1 , M = Ni ( 1 ), Pd ( 2 ), Pt ( 3 ); L = L 2 , M = Ni ( 4 ), Pd ( 5 ), Pt ( 6 )] and [Pt(L 2 )(acac)] ( 7 ) have been prepared by the reactions of two tetradentate macrocyclic amine-NHC ligand precursors, [H 2 L 1 ][PF 6 ] 2 and [H 2 L 2 ][PF 6 ] 2 , with Ni(OAc) 2 ·4H 2 O, Pd(OAc) 2 and Pt(acac) 2 in the presence of NaOAc. Complex 7 is isolated along with 6 from the same reaction between [H 2 L 2 ][PF 6 ] 2 and Pt(acac) 2 . There are two atropisomers in 1–3 and two achiral conformers in 4–6 . The crystal structures of 1–3 and one conformer of 4–6 ( 4a–6a ) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The metal ion is found to reside in the cavity of the macrocyclic ring and adopts a square-planar configuration. Detailed NMR studies including variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy reveal a dynamic interconverting process between two atropisomers of 1–3 in the solutions via a ring twisting mechanism. Two conformers in the equilibrated solution of 4–6 , probably arising from the orientation of two amine N–H bonds with respect to the coordination plane, exchange slowly. Time-dependent 1 H NMR spectra show that one conformer ( 4a–6a ) in solution converts into the other ( 4b–6b ) via the inversion of the nitrogen atom.

  2. 2-(Arylamino)-4,6-di- tert -butylphenols containing 4-substituted phenyl groups ( R apH 2 ) react with oxobis(ethylene glycolato)osmium( vi ) in acetone to give square pyramidal bis(amidophenoxide)oxoosmium( vi ) complexes. A mono-amidophenoxide complex is observed as an intermediate in these reactions. Reactions in dichloromethane yield the diolate ( H ap) 2 Os(OCH 2 CH 2 O). Both the glycolate and oxo complex are converted to the corresponding cis -dichloride complex on treatment with chlorotrimethylsilane. The novel bis(aminophenol) ligand EganH 4 , containing an ethylene glycol dianthranilate bridge, forms the chelated bis(amidophenoxide) complex (Egan)OsO, where the two nitrogen atoms of the tetradentate ligand bind in the trans positions of the square pyramid. Structural and spectroscopic features of the complexes are described well by an osmium( vi )-amidophenoxide formulation, with the amount of π donation from ligand to metal increasing markedly as the co-ligands change from oxo to diolate to dichloride. In the oxo-bis(amidophenoxides), the symmetry of the ligand π orbitals results in only one effective π donor interaction, splitting the energy of the two osmium-oxo π* orbitals and rendering the osmium-oxo bonding appreciably anisotropic.

  3. A new diarylmido-based pincer proto ligand ( iPrPNHSbPh ) with one –PPr i 2 and one –SbPh 2 side donor has been synthesized. Three complexes of its amido form were prepared using standard metalation techniques: ( iPrPNSbPh ) PdCl , ( iPrPNSbPh ) RhCO , and ( iPrPNSbPh ) Ir(COE) , where COE = cis -cyclooctene. These complexes were compared with their previously reported analogs incorporating a –PPh 2 side donor in place of –SbPh 2 . The –SbPh 2 donor arm is less donating towards the metal and is less strongly trans -influencing, based on the structural and IR spectroscopic analysis of the Rh complexes. The redox potential of the Pd complexes is only marginally affected by the change from –PPh 2 to –SbPh 2 . (iPrPNSbPh)Ir(COE) proved to be a slower and less selective catalyst in the dehydrogenative borylation of terminal alkynes (DHBTA) than its –PPh 2 analog.

  4. Abstract A new series of mono‐ and bis‐alkynyl CoIII(TIM) complexes (TIM=2,3,9,10‐tetramethyl‐1,4,8,11‐tetraazacyclotetradeca‐1,3,8,10‐tetraene) is reported herein. Thetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)Cl]+complexes were prepared from the reaction betweentrans‐[Co(TIM)Cl2]PF6and HC2R (R=tri(isopropyl)silyl or TIPS (1), ‐C6H4‐4‐tBu (2), ‐C6H4‐4‐NO2(3 a), andN‐mesityl‐1,8‐naphthalimide or NAPMes(4 a)) in the presence of Et3N. The intermediate complexes of the typetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)(NCMe)](PF6)(OTf),3 band4 b, were obtained by treating3 aand4 a, respectively, with AgOTf in CH3CN. Furthermore, bis‐alkynyltrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)2]PF6complexes,3 cand4 c, were generated following a second dehydrohalogenation reaction between3 band4 b, respectively, and the appropriate HC2R in the presence of Et3N. These new complexes have been characterized using X‐ray diffraction (2,3 a,4 a, and4 c), IR,1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopy (4 c), and cyclic voltammetry.

  5. Interest in O 2 -dependent aliphatic carbon–carbon (C–C) bond cleavage reactions of first row divalent metal diketonate complexes stems from the desire to further understand the reaction pathways of enzymes such as DKE1 and to extract information to develop applications in organic synthesis. A recent report of O 2 -dependent aliphatic C–C bond cleavage at ambient temperature in Ni( ii ) diketonate complexes supported by a tridentate nitrogen donor ligand [(MBBP)Ni(PhC(O)CHC(O)Ph)]Cl ( 7-Cl ; MBBP = 2,6-bis(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) in the presence of NEt 3 spurred our interest in further examining the chemistry of such complexes. A series of new TERPY-ligated Ni( ii ) diketonate complexes of the general formula [(TERPY)Ni(R 2 -1,3-diketonate)]ClO 4 ( 1 : R = CH 3 ; 2 : R = C(CH 3 ) 3 ; 3 : R = Ph) was prepared under air and characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, 1 H NMR, ESI-MS, FTIR, and UV-vis. Analysis of the reaction mixtures in which these complexes were generated using 1 H NMR and ESI-MS revealed the presence of both the desired diketonate complex and the bis-TERPY derivative [(TERPY) 2 Ni](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 4 ). Through selective crystallization 1–3 were isolated in analytically pure form. Analysis of reaction mixtures leading to the formation of the MBBP analogs [(MBBP)Ni(R 2 -1,3-diketonate)]X (X = ClO 4 : 5 : R = CH 3 ; 6 : R = C(CH 3 ) 3 ; 7-ClO4 : R = Ph; X = Cl: 7-Cl : R = Ph) using 1 H NMR and ESI-MS revealed the presence of [(MBBP) 2 Ni](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 8 ). Analysis of aerobic acetonitrile solutions of analytically pure 1–3 , 5 and 6 containing NEt 3 and in some cases H 2 O using 1 H NMR and UV-vis revealed evidence for the formation of additional bis-ligand complexes ( 4 and 8 ) but suggested no oxidative diketonate cleavage reactivity. Analysis of the organic products generated from 3 , 7-ClO4 and 7-Cl revealed unaltered dibenzoylmethane. Our results therefore indicate that N 3 -ligated Ni( ii ) complexes of unsubstituted diketonate ligands do not exhibit O 2 -dependent aliphatic C–C bond clevage at room temperature, including in the presence of NEt 3 and/or H 2 O.
