Title: Warming indirectly simplifies food webs through effects on apex predators
Abstract

Warming alters ecosystems through direct physiological effects on organisms and indirect effects via biotic interactions, but their relative impacts in the wild are unknown due to the difficulty in warming natural environments. Here we bridge this gap by embedding manipulative field experiments within a natural stream temperature gradient to test whether warming and apex fish predators have interactive effects on freshwater ecosystems. Fish exerted cascading effects on algal production and microbial decomposition via both green and brown pathways in the food web, but only under warming. Neither temperature nor the presence of fish altered food web structure alone, but connectance and mean trophic level declined as consumer species were lost when both drivers acted together. A mechanistic model indicates that this temperature-induced trophic cascade is determined primarily by altered interactions, which cautions against extrapolating the impacts of warming from reductionist approaches that do not consider the wider food web.

  1. Abstract

    Production of animal biomass and the number of trophic levels supported by an ecosystem depend in part on rates of primary production, disturbance, predator–prey interactions, and the efficiency of energy flow through food webs. Of these factors, food web efficiency has been among the most difficult to quantify empirically. Thus, both the drivers and consequences of variation in food web efficiency remain largely unstudied in field settings. We estimated food web efficiency in nine desert streams spanning gradients of flash flood recurrence, resource availability, and trophic structure. Food web efficiency was estimated as fish community production relative to gross primary production at an annual timescale, based on quarterly observations of fish biomass and stream metabolism. Gross primary production was greatest in streams characterized by flashier flow regimes and greater relative light, temperature, and nitrogen availability. Fish production ranged from 0.02 to 0.50 g C m−2 yr−1, food web efficiency ranged from 9.5 × 10−5to 1.8 × 10−2, and both properties decreased with flashier flow regime, light, temperature, and nitrogen availability, but were not associated with food chain length. These results, combined with opposite effects of environmental variation on primary vs. fish production, indicated that the effects of disturbance regime (i.e., scouring floods), light, and temperature on fish production were not strongly mediated by bottom‐up controls. Estimates of food web efficiency under ambient disturbance and resource regimes suggest that a decoupling of energy flow from primary producers to upper trophic levels may prevail in hydrologically dynamic desert stream ecosystems.

  2. Abstract

    Changes in seasonality associated with climate warming (e.g. temperature, growing season duration) are likely to alter invertebrate prey biomass and availability in aquatic ecosystems through direct and indirect influences on physiology and phenology, particularly in arctic lakes. However, despite warmer thermal regimes, photoperiod will remain unchanged such that potential shifts resulting from longer and warmer growing seasons could be limited by availability of sunlight, especially at lower trophic levels. Thus, a better understanding of warming effects on invertebrate prey throughout the growing season (e.g. early, peak, late) is important to understand arctic lake food‐web dynamics in a changing climate.

    Here, we use a multifaceted approach to evaluate prey availability to predators in lakes of arctic Alaska. In a laboratory mesocosm experiment, we measured different metrics of abundance for snails (Lymnaea elodes) and zooplankton (Daphnia middendorffiana) across three time periods (early, mid‐ and late growing season) and across three temperature and photoperiod treatments (control, increased temperature and increased temperature × photoperiod). Additionally, we used generalised additive models and generalised additive mixed‐effects models to relate long‐term empirical observations of zooplankton biomass (1983–2015) to observed temperature regimes in an arctic lake. We then simulated zooplankton biomass for the warmest temperature observations across the growing season to inform likely zooplankton biomass regimes under future change.

    We observed variable responses by snails and zooplankton across experiments and treatments. Early in the growing season, snail development was accelerated at multiple life stages (e.g. egg and juvenile). In mid‐season, in accordance with warmer temperatures, we observed significantly increasedDaphniaabundances. However, in the late season,Daphniaappeared to be limited by photoperiod. Confirming our experimental results, our models of zooplankton biomass showed an increase of nearly 20% in warmer years. Further, these model estimates could be conservative as the consumptive demand of fishes may increase in warmer years as well.

    Overall, our results highlight the importance of interactive effects of temperature and seasonality. Based primarily on temperature, we can readily predict the response of fish metabolism in warmer temperatures. However, in this context, we generally require a better understanding of climate‐driven responses of important invertebrate prey resources. Our results suggest invertebrate prey biomass and availability are likely to respond positively with climate change based on temperature and seasonality, as well as proportionally to the metabolic requirements of fish predators. While further research is necessary to understand how other food‐web components will respond climate change, our findings suggest that the fish community at the top of arctic lake food webs will have adequate prey base in a warming climate.

  3. Abstract

    Animals exert both direct and indirect controls over elemental cycles, linking primary producer‐based (green) and decomposer‐based (brown) food webs through top‐down trophic interactions and bottom‐up element regeneration. Where animals are aggregated at high biomass, they create hotspots of elemental cycling. The relative importance of animal control on elemental cycling depends on animal biomass, species functional traits (i.e. feeding mode and stoichiometry), and their overlap.

    We evaluated how animal community complexity affects the mechanisms regulating energy flow to the brown food web. We conducted a mesocosm experiment where we varied the biomass and overlap of animals with different life history and stoichiometric traits (stream fish and mussels) and measured how this influenced the quantity and fraction of labile carbon available to microbes. We used linear models and structural equation modelling to evaluate direct (excretion) and indirect (herbivory, nutrient availability, and nutrient stoichiometry) effects of animals on bioavailable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) concentration.

    In experimental stream mesocosms, we found support for both direct (DOC excretion) and indirect (grazing) animal influences on BDOC concentration. Although we found that snail, fish, and mussel biomass increased nutrient concentrations, neither nutrient concentration nor stoichiometry had a significant effect on BDOC concentration. This has been due to the high background nutrient concentration context of our stream mesocosm water. Snails, probably due to their high biomass and small body size, exerted a significant positive direct control on BDOC concentration. Fish and mussels exerted a significant negative indirect control on BDOC via their effects (grazing and bioturbation) on algal biomass.

    Our results imply that primary consumers with different feeding strategies provide a key mechanism regulating the flow of DOC into the brown food web through direct (excretion) and indirect (grazing) controls on primary producers. This highlights that animals can provide important controls on the production of bioavailable organic energy supporting microbes in aquatic ecosystems, but the importance of these controls depends on the nutrient context and the distribution of primary producer and animal biomasses.

  4. Abstract

    Anthropogenic stressors have strong impacts on ecosystems. To understand their influence, detailed knowledge about trophic relationships among species is critical. However, this requires both exceptional resolution in dietary assessments and sampling breadth within communities, especially for highly diverse, tropical ecosystems.

    We used gut content metabarcoding across a broad range of coral reef fishes (8 families, 22 species) in Mo'orea, French Polynesia, to test whether this technique has the potential to capture the structure of a hyperdiverse marine food web. Moreover, we explored whether taxonomic groups (families) and traditional, broad‐scale trophic assignments explained fish diet across four different metrics of quantifying predator–prey interactions.

    Metabarcoding yielded a large number (4,341) of unique operational taxonomic units (i.e. prey) with high‐resolution taxonomic assignments (i.e. often to the level of genus or species). We demonstrate that across multiple metrics, taxonomic group at the family level is a consistently better, albeit still weak, predictor of empirical trophic relationships than frequently used, broad‐scale functional assignments. Our method also reveals a complex trophic network with fine‐scale partitioning among species, further emphasizing the importance of examining fish diets beyond broad trophic categories.

    We demonstrate the capacity of metabarcoding to reconstruct diverse and complex food webs with exceptional resolution, a significant advancement from traditional food web reconstruction. Furthermore, this method allows us to pinpoint the trophic niche of species with niche‐based modelling, even across hyperdiverse species assemblages such as coral reefs. In conjunction with complementary techniques such as stable isotope analysis, applying metabarcoding to whole communities will provide unparalleled information about energy and nutrient fluxes and inform their susceptibility to disturbances even in the world's most diverse ecosystems.

  5. Abstract

    Food webs are complex ecological networks that reveal species interactions and energy flow in ecosystems. Prevailing ecological knowledge on forested streams suggests that their food webs are based on allochthonous carbon, driven by a constant supply of organic matter from adjacent vegetation and limited primary production due to low light conditions. Extreme climatic disturbances can disrupt these natural ecosystem dynamics by altering resource availability, which leads to changes in food web structure and functioning. Here, we quantify the response of stream food webs to two major hurricanes (Irma and María, Category 5 and 4, respectively) that struck Puerto Rico in September 2017. Within two tropical forested streams (first and second order), we collected ecosystem and food web data 6 months prior to the hurricanes and 2, 9, and 18 months afterward. We assessed the structural (e.g., canopy) and hydrological (e.g., discharge) characteristics of the ecosystem and monitored changes in basal resources (i.e., algae, biofilm, and leaf litter), consumers (e.g., aquatic invertebrates, riparian consumers), and applied Layman's community‐wide metrics using the isotopic composition of13C and15N. Continuous stream discharge measurements indicated that the hurricanes did not cause an extreme hydrological event. However, the sixfold increase in canopy openness and associated changes in litter input appeared to trigger an increase in primary production. These food webs were primarily based on terrestrially derived carbon before the hurricanes, but most taxa (includingAtyaandXiphocarisshrimp, the consumers with highest biomass) shifted their food source to autochthonous carbon within 2 months of the hurricanes. We also found evidence that the hurricanes dramatically altered the structure of the food web, resulting in shorter (i.e., smaller food‐chain length), narrower (i.e., lower diversity of carbon sources) food webs, as well as increased trophic species packing. This study demonstrates how hurricane disturbance can alter stream food webs, changing the trophic base from allochthonous to autochthonous resources via changes in the physical environment (i.e., canopy defoliation). As hurricanes become more frequent and severe due to climate change, our findings greatly contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms that maintain forested stream trophic interactions amidst global change.
