Title: Effects of Surface‐Immobilization on Photobleaching of Xanthene Dye Photocatalysts
Abstract While organic photocatalysts provide increasingly versatile chemical pathways under mild conditions, their long‐term stability remains understudied. Here, the photobleaching behavior of xanthene dye photocatalysts is investigated. Rose Bengal, Eosin Y, and fluorescein are studied when in solution, when grafted to glass beads, and when incorporated into polymer brushes that are tethered to glass beads. This provides a comparison between xanthene's stability as a homogeneous and as a heterogeneous photocatalyst. Photobleaching is investigated using UV–vis, diffuse reflectance UV–vis (DR UV–vis), and fluorescence microscopy. Xanthene dyes as homogeneous photocatalysts exhibit the highest photostability, while the grafted systems appeared to fade more rapidly. Notably, heterogenization appears to have different effects based on the photocatalyst system, and further altering the photocatalyst environment with reagents may improve stability.  more » « less

Droplet-based microfluidics is used to fabricate thin shell hydrogel microcapsules for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The microcapsules composed of a poly(methacrylic acid) hydrogel shell exhibit unique properties, including permeation, separation, purification, and reaction of molecular species. Photocatalytic TiO 2 and ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated in the microcapsules, i.e. photocatalyst in capsule (PIC), are used to remove organic pollutants using an adsorption–oxidation mechanism. A prototype flow microreactor is assembled to demonstrate a controllable water purification approach in short time using photocatalysts. Our studies of aqueous and homogeneous hydrogel environments for the photocatalysts provide important insights into understanding the effectiveness of MB removal. Hydrogel capsules have MB removal rate comparable to homogeneous particles. Further reduction of both capsule and photocatalyst sizes can potentially aid in quicker water purification.

  2. The Ogallala Aquifer, a primary irrigation water source in the High Plains region of the United States, is declining, thereby necessitating new water conservation strategies. This paper investigates the impact of mixed wettability on the evaporation dynamics of a 10-µl sessile water droplet placed within simulated soil pores comprised of hydrophobic Teflon beads (CA ∼ 108°) and hydrophilic glass (CA ∼ 41°) beads with 2.38-mm diameters, where homogeneous and heterogenous (i.e., mixed hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity) wettability configurations were investigated. Experiments were performed in an environmental chamber where the relative humidity and temperature were 60% ± 0.1% RH and 20 ± 0.4 °C, respectively. Wettability influenced evaporation times, with homogeneous hydrophobic pores (i.e., three Teflon beads) and heterogenous one glass, two Teflon pores having the longest average evaporation times of 40 and 39 min, respectively. Homogeneous hydrophilic pores (i.e., three glass beads) and heterogenous two glass, one Teflon pores exhibited evaporation times of 34 min. Evaporation times for heterogenous combinations trended based on the predominant wettability. Contact angles and the projected length of contact were analyzed from videos to capture pinning and depinning during evaporation. For many cases including hydrophobicity, contact angles were less than 90°, and in some configurations, water would be pinned on a Teflon bead, whereas depinning (i.e., moving) on a glass bead. Stick-slip evaporation was observed, where the evaporating droplet switched between constant contact radius and constant contact area evaporative modes to minimize droplet surface energy. The results suggest wettability alterations in agricultural settings may reduce evaporation.

  4. Terminal silanol groups on the glass surface were used for the chemical bonding of α-bromo amide as the initiator for surface initiated Cu(0)-mediated living radical polymerization (LRP) to graft well-defined poly(butyl arylate) (PBA) and poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEM) brushes on the glass surface. A grafting to methodology was also performed by the modification of the glass surface using a thiosilane agent and performing a thio-bromo click reaction in the presence of PBA and PTFEM synthesized via Cu(0)-mediated LRP. Furthermore, a one-pot grafting to method was developed that proved a facile, fast, and efficient method for grafting a bromo-terminated polymer to the glass surface in one step. All glass slides were characterized using ATR-FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements and SEM. The surface topology and roughness of selected samples were analyzed using AFM. Results show that an ultrathin layer of a polymer with nanoscale features and high roughness was chemically grafted to the glass surface without compromising glass transparency. These methodologies can be used to graft well-defined polymers with different functionalities on the glass surface.

  5. Abstract Feroxyhite (δ-FeOOH) nanomaterials were successfully synthesized through the atmospheric AC microplasma method at room temperature from ferrous sulfate aqueous solutions. Various syntheses conditions, including electric voltage, electric field strength, ferrous concentration, hydrogen peroxide concentration, and reaction duration, were systematically investigated. The synthesized products were characterized through x-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The bandgap of the produced materials were strongly dependent of the ferrous concentration while the product ratio was dependent on all experimental conditions. The synthesis mechanism was thoroughly discussed. The synthesized nanomaterials were amorphous nanospheres, showing superparamagnetic properties at room temperature. The synthesized oxyhydroxide is a potential photovoltaic material besides its reported applications in photocatalysts and supercapacitors. The application of this synthesis technique could be extended to synthesize other oxy-hydroxide nanomaterials for renewable energy applications facilely, scalablely, cost-effectively, and environmentally.
