Title: Variation in Skin Red and Yellow Undertone: Reliability of Ratings and Predicted Relevance for Social Experiences
It is well established that skin lightness-darkness is associated with social outcomes, but little is known regarding the social salience of skin undertones (redness and yellowness). Our study addresses two related research questions on this topic: first, we ask whether red and yellow undertones are consistently perceived by observers; second, we ask whether red and yellow undertones are associated with expectations of discrimination across a range of social settings. We address these questions using novel survey data in which skin lightness-darkness and undertones are captured using CIELAB measurements and a two-dimensional categorical skin color scale. Although we find skin lightness-darkness to be the strongest and most consistent predictor of discrimination expectations, respondents also perceived skin undertones consistently, and skin yellowness was associated with a higher predicted likelihood of discrimination net of lightness-darkness in certain social settings. Our findings suggest that colorism can extend beyond a light-dark binary and emphasize the value of capturing undertones, particularly yellowness, in social surveys assessing skin color.  more » « less

  1. Surveys that assess skin color support evidence building about colorism and related systemic inequalities that affect health and wellbeing. Methodologists have increasing choices for such assessments, including a growing array of digital images for rating scales and increasingly cost-effective handheld mechanical devices based on color science. Guidance is needed for choosing among these growing options. We used data from a diverse sample of 102 college students to produce new empirical evidence and practical guidance about various options. We compared three handheld devices that ranged in price, considering variations in their reliabilities and how their results differed by where on the body and with what device settings readings were taken. We also offered evidence regarding how reliably interviewers and participants could choose from a large array of color swatches offering variation in skin undertone (redness, yellowness) in addition to skin shade (lightness-to-darkness). Overall, the results were promising, demonstrating that modern handheld devices and rating scales could be feasibly and reliably used. For instance, results demonstrated that just one or two device readings were needed at any given location, and, the device readings and rating scale scores similarly captured the relative darkness of skin. In other cases, recommendations were less certain. For instance, skin undertones of redness and yellowness were more sensitive to device choices and body locations. We encourage future studies that pursue why such variability exists and for which substantive questions it matters most.

As US society continues to diversify and calls for better measurements of racialized appearance increase, survey researchers need guidance about effective strategies for assessing skin color in field research. This study examined the consistency, comparability, and meaningfulness of the two most widely used skin tone rating scales (Massey–Martin and PERLA) and two portable and inexpensive handheld devices for skin color measurement (Nix colorimeter and Labby spectrophotometer). We collected data in person using these four instruments from forty-six college students selected to reflect a wide range of skin tones across four racial-ethnic groups (Asian, Black, Latinx, White). These college students, five study staff, and 459 adults from an online sample also rated forty stock photos, again selected for skin tone diversity. Our results—based on data collected under controlled conditions—demonstrate high consistency across raters and readings. The Massey–Martin and PERLA scale scores were highly linearly related to each other, although PERLA better differentiated among people with the lightest skin tones. The Nix and Labby darkness-to-lightness (L*) readings were likewise linearly related to each other and to the Massey–Martin and PERLA scores, in addition to showing expected variation within and between race ethnicities. In addition, darker Massey–Martin and PERLA ratings correlated with online raters’ expectations that a photographed person experienced greater discrimination. In contrast, the redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) undertones were highest in the mid-range of the rating scale scores and demonstrated greater overlap across race-ethnicities. Overall, each instrument showed sufficient consistency, comparability, and meaningfulness for use in field surveys when implemented soundly (e.g., not requiring memorization). However, PERLA might be preferred to Massey–Martin in studies representing individuals with the lightest skin tones, and handheld devices may be preferred to rating scales to reduce measurement error when studies could gather only a single rating.

  3. In order be successful, engineers must ask their clients, coworkers, and bosses questions. Asking questions can improve work quality and make the asker appear smarter. However, people often hesitate to ask questions for fear of seeming incompetent or inferior. This study investigates: what characteristics and experiences are connected to engineering students’ perceptions of asking questions? We analyzed data from a survey of over a thousand engineering undergraduates across a nationally representative sample of 27 U.S. engineering schools. We focused on three dependent variables: question-asking self-efficacy (how confident students are in their ability to ask a lot of questions), social outcome expectations around asking questions (whether students believe if they ask a lot of questions, they will earn the respect of their colleagues), and career outcome expectations (whether they believe asking a lot of questions will hurt their chances for getting ahead at work). We were surprised to find that question-asking self-efficacy or outcome expectations did not significantly vary by gender, under-represented minority status, and school size. However, students with high question-asking self-efficacy and outcome expectations were more likely to have engaged in four extracurricular experiences: participating in an internship or co-op, conducting research with a faculty member, participating in a student group, and holding a leadership role in an organization or student group. The number of different types of these extracurricular activities a student engaged in correlated with question-asking self-efficacy and positive outcome expectations around asking questions. The results illustrate the relationship between extracurricular activities and students’ self-efficacy and behavior outcome expectations. The college experience is more than just formal academic classes. Students learn from experiences that occur after class or during the summer, and ideally these experiences complement class-derived skills and confidence in asking questions.

    Chemically defended prey often advertise their toxins with bright and conspicuous colors. To understand why such colors are effective at reducing predation, we need to understand the psychology of key predators. In bird predators, there is evidence that individuals avoid novelty—including prey of novel colors (with which they have had no prior experience). Moreover, the effect of novelty is sometimes strongest for colors that are typically associated with aposematic prey (e.g., red, orange, yellow). Given these findings in the bird literature, color neophobia has been argued to be a driving force in the evolution of aposematism. However, no studies have yet asked whether invertebrate predators respond similarly to novel colors. Here, we tested whether naive lab-raised jumping spiders ( Habronattus pyrrithrix ) exhibit similar patterns of color neophobia to birds. Using color-manipulated living prey, we first color-exposed spiders to prey of two out of three colors (blue, green, or red), with the third color remaining novel. After this color exposure phase, we gave the spiders tests where they could choose between all three colors (two familiar, one novel). We found that H . pyrrithrix attacked novel and familiar-colored prey at equal rates with no evidence that the degree of neophobia varied by color. Moreover, we found no evidence that either prey novelty nor color (nor their interaction) had an effect on how quickly prey was attacked. We discuss these findings in the context of what is known about color neophobia in other animals and how this contributes to our understanding of aposematic signals.

Abstract PremiseEvolutionary theory predicts polymorphism should be rare; however, intraspecific variation in floral color is common and can be attributed to genetic drift, plasticity, or variable selection. Examining floral color polymorphism both within contact zones and across a species' range can reveal the mechanisms maintaining this variation. Here, we used a multistep approach to investigate spatially heterogeneous variation in floral bract color inCastilleja coccinea. MethodsWe compared frequencies of color morphs, floral morphology, fitness, and genetic structure in regional populations and in a common garden. Next, we examined habitat differences, including edaphic factors, as potential drivers of variation. Lastly, we leveraged herbarium and iNaturalist occurrence data to investigate whether patterns were consistent at the landscape scale. ResultsBract color inC. coccineais genetically heritable, with yellow dominant over red, and is under selection. Populations are predominantly monomorphic, with color distance showing no correlation to genetic or geographic distance, despite significant genetic isolation by distance. Yellow morphs were associated with open wetlands, while red morphs occurred at drier sites with nearby tree cover. Red morphs demonstrated lower fitness in a common garden, suggesting trade‐offs associated with pleiotropic effects of floral color. ConclusionsDifferences in floral color between morphs are consistent with diversification associated with a shift in ecological niche. We identified variation in edaphic and habitat conditions as probable drivers of divergence in floral color. Additionally, variation in other floral traits suggests a combined role of pollinators and habitat differences acting in concert to maintain distinct floral color morphs.
