  1. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is shifting the types and uses of computing tools in classrooms, necessitating study of how and what decisions are made about the use of AI in courses. All teachers will need to understand and be able to make important choices about GenAI for their learners. In this project, 25 teacher educators took an AI professional development course, and this paper describes their reflections and final projects. Participants at two large southeastern universities represented teacher preparation programs across all grade bands and disciplines. The shared practices the teacher educators used revealed ways GenAI can be a tool to support, not replace, a teacher. Limitations of GenAI applications are also discussed. The inclusion of all teacher educators in the project, and not just “faculty”, enabled more participation, along with the flexible timing of the online course, and personalization of the final project.

    This paper presents an experience report from an NSF-funded researcher-practitioner partnership (RPP) project. Based on a collaboration among two public research universities and three urban school districts in the Northeast USA, the goal of the project is to establish an institutionalized middle school computer science curriculum in the districts. The CS curriculum incorporates digital literacy skills as an integral aspect of learning computer science, and is based on students developing mobile apps that provide social and community good. Here, we share our professional learning process during the project's first year, which had been developed iteratively and dynamically adjusted to a remote format in response to exigencies of Spring 2020. The paper includes analysis of three data sets from teacher-participants: (1) their questions about the nature of the project, which we categorized into three levels: project, district and teacher levels. These questions bridge the visions and knowledge among different groups of the project partners; (2) analysis of semi-structured interview conversations with more than half of the teacher-participants; and (3) teacher survey responses. Our findings include two recommendations: that RPP projects elicit teacher questions to illuminate the three levels identified, and use strategies that engage teachers in designing a professional learning process for teaching computer science.

Abstract Learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects starting at a young age helps prepare students for a variety of careers both inside and outside of the sciences. Yet, addressing integrated STEM in an elementary school setting can be challenging. Teacher leadership is one way to address this challenge. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive case study is to understand how participation in the NebraskaSTEM Noyce Master Teaching Fellowship project impacted elementary STEM teacher leadership identities. Our findings suggest participation in the project contributed to different layers of teacher leadership identity (as a STEM learner, as a STEM teacher, and as a STEM teacher leader). These findings suggest professional development should be tailored to address empowering specific layers of STEM teacher leaders' professional identity. Other teacher leadership development projects may want to consider how to structure their projects to empower teachers based on the identities and experiences of those teachers.

  4. School-based citizen science (SBCS) can promote mathematics and science integration in elementary classrooms. The "Teacher Learning for Effective School-Based Citizen Science" (TL4CS) project created materials to support teachers' use of SBCS. One teacher shares her experiences using TL4CS materials designed for the weather-focused CoCoRaHS project to teach mathematics and science.

    This 5-year mathematics professional development project involves 27 elementary teachers being prepared and supported as Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMSs) through completion of a university’s K-5 Mathematics and Teacher Supporting & Coaching Endorsement programs, as well as participation in Professional Learning Communities and individual mentoring. Across the project, data are gathered to examine changes in mathematical content knowledge, instructional and coaching practices, beliefs, and teacher leader skills of the EMSs. Described here are Year 1 data from the participants, who have been identified as successful, experienced teachers, focusing on specific aspects of teacher effectiveness. The findings illuminate their classroom instructional practices, including those that are learner-centered and equitable, along with their early histories as learners of mathematics.
