Title: Robot-Mediated Nudges for Workplace Health: Not a One-Size-Fits-All Modeling Problem
Abstract Prolonged sedentary behavior in the vast population of office and remote workers leads to increased cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health challenges, and existing solutions for encouraging breaks are either costly health coaches or notification systems that are easily ignored. A socially assistive robot (SAR) for promoting healthy workplace practices could provide the physical presence of a health coach along with the scalability of a notification system. To investigate the impact of such a system, we implemented a SAR as an alternative break-taking support solution and examined its impact on individual users’ break-taking habits over relatively long-term deployments. We conducted an initial two-month-long study (N= 7) to begin to understand the robot’s influence beyond the point of novelty, and we followed up with a week-long data collection (N= 14) to augment the dataset size. The resulting data was used to inform a robot behavior model and formulate possible methods of personalizing robot behaviors. We found that uninterrupted sitting time tended to decrease with our SAR intervention. During model formulation, we found participant responsiveness to the break-taking prompts could be classified into three archetypes and that archetype-specific adjustments to the general model led to improved system success. These results indicate that break-taking prompts are not a one-size-fits-all problem, and that even a small dataset can support model personalization for improving the success of assistive robotic systems.  more » « less

    Childhood ambulatory disabilities detract from not only the physical development, but also the social engagement of young children. Commercial mobility aids can help improve the autonomy of children with disabilities, but affordability issues, policy challenges, and uncertainty about training standards limit early use of these devices. In this paper, we build on affordable research-grade mobility aids for young children and consider how to design and evaluate an assistive robot that can support the use of these devices. With young children’s contingency learning abilities in mind, we designed an assistive mobile robot capable of supplying age-appropriate light, sound, and bubble rewards. We conducted a first evaluation of the robot’s ability to support driving practice with N = 5 typically developing infants. The results indicate mixed success of the robot rewards; driving distances uniformly tended to fall over the course of the study, but children did tend to look at the robot. In a second exploratory study involving N = 6 children in free ambulatory play, we see clearer differences in gaze and behavior from the introduction of an assistive robot. Generally, this research can inform others interested in assistive robotic interventions for young children.

  2. Socially Assistive Robots (SARs) have demonstrated success in the delivery of interventions to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To date, these robot-mediated interventions have primarily been designed and implemented by robotics researchers. It remains unclear whether therapists could independently utilize robots to deliver therapies in clinical settings. In this paper, we conducted a study to investigate whether therapists could design and implement robot-mediated interventions for children with ASD. Furthermore, we compared therapists’ performance, efficiency, and perceptions towards using a Virtual Reality (VR) and kinesthetic-based interface for delivering robot-mediated interventions. Overall, our results demonstrated therapists could independently design and implement interventions with a SAR. They were faster at designing a new intervention using VR than a kinesthetic interface. Therapists also had similar performance to delivering in-person interventions when utilizing VR to deliver interventions with the robot. Therapists reported moderate workload using the VR interface and perceived VR to be usable.

  3. Ambient Information Systems (AIS) have shown some success when used as a notification towards users’ health-related activities. But in the actual busy lives of users, ambient notifications might be forgotten or even missed, nullifying the original notification. Could a system use multiple levels of noticeability to ensure its message is received, and how could this concept be effectively portrayed? To examine these questions, we took a Research through Design approach and created plant-mimicking Shape-Changing Interface (S-CI) artifacts, then conducted interviews with 10 participants who currently used a reminder system for health-related activities. We report findings on acceptable scenarios to disrupting people for health-related activities, and participants’ reactions to our design choices, including how using naturalistic aesthetics led to interpretations of the uncanny and morose, and which ways system physicality affected imagined uses. We offer design suggestions in health-related notification systems and S-CIs, and discuss future work in ambient-to-disruptive technology.

  4. Background: Play is critical for children’s physical, cognitive, and social development. Technology-based toys like robots are especially of interest to children. This pilot study explores the affordances of the play area provided by developmentally appropriate toys and a mobile socially assistive robot (SAR). The objective of this study is to assess the role of the SAR on physical activity, play behavior, and toy-use behavior of children during free play. Methods: Six children (5 females, M age = 3.6 ± 1.9 years) participated in the majority of our pilot study’s seven 30-minute-long weekly play sessions (4 baseline and 3 intervention). During baseline sessions, the SAR was powered off. During intervention sessions, the SAR was teleoperated to move in the play area and offered rewards of lights, sounds, and bubbles to children. Thirty-minute videos of the play sessions were annotated using a momentary time sampling observation system. Mean percentage of time spent in behaviors of interest in baseline and intervention sessions were calculated. Paired-Wilcoxon signed rank tests were conducted to assess differences between baseline and intervention sessions. Results: There was a significant increase in children’s standing (∼15%; Z = −2.09; p = 0.037) and a tendency for less time sitting (∼19%; Z = −1.89; p = 0.059) in the intervention phase as compared to the baseline phase. There was also a significant decrease (∼4.5%, Z = −2.70; p = 0.007) in peer interaction play and a tendency for greater (∼4.5%, Z = −1.89; p = 0.059) interaction with adults in the intervention phase as compared to the baseline phase. There was a significant increase in children’s interaction with the robot (∼11.5%, Z = −2.52; p = 0.012) in the intervention phase as compared to the baseline phase. Conclusion: These results may indicate that a mobile SAR provides affordances through rewards that elicit children’s interaction with the SAR and more time standing in free play. This pilot study lays a foundation for exploring the role of SARs in inclusive play environments for children with and without mobility disabilities in real-world settings like day-care centers and preschools.

  5. Turn-taking is a fundamental behavior during human interactions and robots must be capable of turn-taking to interact with humans. Current state-of-the-art approaches in turn-taking focus on developing general models to predict the end of turn (EoT) across all contexts. This demands an all-inclusive verbal and non-verbal behavioral dataset from all possible contexts of interaction. Before robot deployment, gathering such a dataset may be infeasible and/or impractical. More importantly, a robot needs to predict the EoT and decide on the best time to take a turn (i.e, start speaking). In this research, we present a learning from demonstration (LfD) system for a robot to learn from demonstrations, after it has been deployed, to make decisions on the appropriate time for taking a turn within specific social interaction contexts. The system captures demonstrations of turn-taking during social interactions and uses these demonstrations to train a LSTM RNN based model to replicate the turn-taking behavior of the demonstrator. We evaluate the system for teaching the turn-taking behavior of an interviewer during a job interview context. Furthermore, we investigate the efficacy of verbal, prosodic, and gestural cues for deciding when to begin a turn.
