Title: Developing a Tool for the Assessment of Systems Thinking in K-12 Settings
Systems thinking is a skill that enables students to grapple with complex problems, often to which there is no clear problem definition or solution, there are many stakeholders, and there are many systems involved (e.g. sociotechnical or socioecological systems). Fostering the development of systems thinking skills is crucial as the problems students encounter in their lives, and in formal and informal educational settings, are increasingly complex. Ongoing research points to the need for more domain-general tools to assess systems thinking in a variety of K-12 settings. Many existing tools or methods used to assess systems thinking in K-12 are often domain specific (e.g. the water cycle in environmental science) and do not always transfer well to more complex problems across content areas. Furthermore, grounding the development of systems thinking skills in the locally relevant contexts that inform and affect students' day-to-day lives also offers the opportunity for students to engage in problems they find interesting and in which they may connect more deeply. This work-in-progress paper presents the development of a general tool informed by existing research in systems thinking and pedagogical practices in K-12 settings. The initial tool development is based on an existing published tool that has been used in undergraduate settings that challenges students to consider an ill-structured problem based on a real world scenario, in which a rubric was defined and applied to measure different systems thinking competencies. The existing tool measures students' ability to identify various contextual and technical aspects of a problem, to identify various stakeholders and stakeholder needs, and to identify short-term goals, long-term goals, and unintended consequences of potential solutions. Knowledge and experience from the development of this tool will be used to pilot an assessment with K-12 students to measure their systems thinking skills in problems that are relevant to them and their experiences.  more » « less

    Developing narrative and computational thinking skills is crucial for K-12 student learning. A growing number of K-12 teachers are utilizing digital storytelling, where students create short narratives around a topic, as a means of creating motivating problem-solving activities for a variety of domains, including history and science. At the same time, there is increasing awareness of the need to engage K-12 students in computational thinking, including elementary school students. Given the challenges that the syntax of text-based programming languages poses for even novice university-level learners, block-based programming languages have emerged as an effective tool for introducing computational thinking to elementary-level students. Leveraging the unique affordances of narrative and computational thinking offers significant potential for student learning; however, integrating them presents significant challenges. In this paper, we describe initial work toward solving this problem by introducing an approach to block-based programming for interactive storytelling to engage upper elementary students (ages 9 to 11) in computational thinking and narrative skill development. Leveraging design principles and best practices from prior research on elementary-grade block-based programming and digital storytelling, we propose a set of custom blocks enabling learners to create interactive narratives. We describe both the process used to derive the custom blocks, including their alignment with elements of interactive narrative and with specific computational thinking curricular goals, as well as lessons learned from students interacting with a prototype learning environment utilizing the block-based programming approach.

  2. As the world becomes increasingly complicated, systems thinking continues to gain recognition as an important and necessary skill for future engineers. Systems thinking does not replace traditional technical skills required of engineers; rather, it provides a complementary skillset to help better navigate complex systems and their corresponding problems. The increasing complexity of U.S. industries demands that universities train and educate future engineers with systems-thinking skills to solve the range of interconnected problems companies may face. Many factors have the potentials to impact systems-thinking skills. This paper aims to identify the effects of potential impacting factors on the systems-thinking skillset. Current college engineering students were the target population of the study. Structural Equation Modeling was performed to quantify the relationship between systems-thinking skills and potential impacting factors. The results of this study indicated that employment status would affect the overall systems-thinking skills of the engineering students and the engineering students with outside job experience will score higher than students without outside job experience in the systems-thinking skills.

  3. Abstract Computational thinking is acknowledged as an essential competency for everyone to learn. However, teachers find it challenging to implement the existing learning approaches in K-12 settings because the existing approaches often focus on teaching computing concepts and skills (i.e., programming skills) rather than on helping students develop their computational thinking competency—a competency that can be used across disciplinary boundaries in accordance with curriculum requirements. To address this need, the current study investigated how game-based learning influenced middle school students’ learning processes, particularly on the development of computational thinking competency, self-efficacy toward computational thinking, and engagement during gameplay. Additionally, the study examined how these outcomes were moderated by individual differences. We observed evidence that the gaming experience influenced students’ computational thinking self-efficacy, but not computational thinking competency or game-based engagement. Compared to age (grade) and prior gaming experience, gender tended to play a more important role in moderating students’ computational thinking competency, self-efficacy toward computational thinking competency, and game-based engagement. Implications and possible directions for future research regarding using game-based learning to enhance computational thinking competency are discussed.

  4. There is an ongoing need to integrate computing-related education within existing K-12 curriculum to maintain global competitiveness and security. Our research addresses the challenge of equitable access to concepts from across the computing spectrum - from computing systems to computer science and computational thinking. The research focuses on overcoming the digital divide by enabling K-12 educators to become conduits for computing education, thereby equipping students with essential computational skills and knowledge. Through two National Science Foundation awards, the team used a mixed-methods approach to develop and assess several traditional and non-traditional teacher engagements. These engagements included a week-long professional development program for K-8 educators and librarians, aimed at designing computing lessons for integration into non-CS disciplines, and a six-week research experience for educators, focused on infusing CS and research concepts into classroom environments. Each of these two engagements was repeated for three consecutive years for a total of six engagements. The assessment of these methods involved qualitative analyses of educator feedback, lesson plan evaluations, and quantitative measures of student engagement and learning outcomes. Our collected artifacts includes over 300 teacher-created and led, innovative lessons spanning a broad spectrum of subjects and educational levels. These lessons have directly engaged several thousand students, demonstrating a marked improvement in computational thinking skills across diverse student populations. Moreover, the engagements have resulted in a significant shift towards viewing computational thinking as an integral element of K-12 education, rather than a standalone discipline. This work highlights the process through which educators can become empowered to integrate computing principles across various subjects and also showcases the tangible benefits of such integration. By facilitating the authentic, teacher-led development of computing lessons and their integration into existing curricula, our research underscores the critical role of educators in bridging the digital divide and fostering a comprehensive educational experience that includes topics from across the computing spectrum.

    We demonstrate how a chemistry unit on evaporative cooling with an embedded system modeling tool called SageModeler can help students in the critical work of exploring and understanding complex problems. The framework for scaffolding students in ST and CT through modeling can be applied to other disciplines—including climate change, ecosystems, population dynamics, forces and motion, and many other topics—in order to foster student participation in systems thinking and computational thinking through modeling. In doing so, they will build skills to help them solve complex problems of the future.
