Speech recognition in noisy environments can be challenging and requires listeners to accurately segregate a target speaker from irrelevant background noise. Stochastic figure-ground (SFG) tasks in which temporally coherent inharmonic pure-tones must be identified from a background have been used to probe the non-linguistic auditory stream segregation processes important for speech-in-noise processing. However, little is known about the relationship between performance on SFG tasks and speech-in-noise tasks nor the individual differences that may modulate such relationships. In this study, 37 younger normal-hearing adults performed an SFG task with target figure chords consisting of four, six, eight, or ten temporally coherent tones amongst a background of randomly varying tones. Stimuli were designed to be spectrally and temporally flat. An increased number of temporally coherent tones resulted in higher accuracy and faster reaction times (RTs). For ten target tones, faster RTs were associated with better scores on the Quick Speech-in-Noise task. Individual differences in working memory capacity and self-reported musicianship further modulated these relationships. Overall, results demonstrate that the SFG task could serve as an assessment of auditory stream segregation accuracy and RT that is sensitive to individual differences in cognitive and auditory abilities, even among younger normal-hearing adults.

                            Attention Mobilization as a Modulator of Listening Effort: Evidence from Pupillometry
                        
                    
    
            Listening to speech in noise can require substantial mental effort, even among younger normal-hearing adults. The task-evoked pupil response (TEPR) has been shown to track the increased effort exerted to recognize words or sentences in increasing noise. However, few studies have examined the trajectory of listening effort across longer, more natural, stretches of speech, or the extent to which expectations about upcoming listening difficulty modulate the TEPR. Seventeen younger normal-hearing adults listened to 60-s-long audiobook passages, repeated three times in a row, at two different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) while pupil size was recorded. There was a significant interaction between SNR, repetition, and baseline pupil size on sustained listening effort. At lower baseline pupil sizes, potentially reflecting lower attention mobilization, TEPRs were more sustained in the harder SNR condition, particularly when attention mobilization remained low by the third presentation. At intermediate baseline pupil sizes, differences between conditions were largely absent, suggesting these listeners had optimally mobilized their attention for both SNRs. Lastly, at higher baseline pupil sizes, potentially reflecting over-mobilization of attention, the effect of SNR was initially reversed for the second and third presentations: participants initially appeared to disengage in the harder SNR condition, resulting in reduced TEPRs that recovered in the second half of the story. Together, these findings suggest that the unfolding of listening effort over time depends critically on the extent to which individuals have successfully mobilized their attention in anticipation of difficult listening conditions.

            Speech sounds exist in a complex acoustic–phonetic space, and listeners vary in the extent to which they are sensitive to variability within the speech sound category (“gradience”) and the degree to which they show stable, consistent responses to phonetic stimuli. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that individual differences in the perception of the sound categories of one's language may aid speech-in-noise performance across the adult lifespan. Declines in speech-in-noise performance are well documented in healthy aging, and are, unsurprisingly, associated with differences in hearing ability. Nonetheless, hearing status and age are incomplete predictors of speech-in-noise performance, and long-standing research suggests that this ability draws on more complex cognitive and perceptual factors. In this study, a group of adults ranging in age from 18 to 67 years performed online assessments designed to measure phonetic category sensitivity, questionnaires querying recent noise exposure history and demographic factors, and crucially, a test of speech-in-noise perception. Results show that individual differences in the perception of two consonant contrasts significantly predict speech-in-noise performance, even after accounting for age and recent noise exposure history. This finding supports the hypothesis that individual differences in sensitivity to phonetic categories mediates speech perception in challenging listening situations.more » « less

            null (Ed.)Abstract Background Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a methodology involving repeated surveys to collect in situ data that describe respondents' current or recent experiences and related contexts in their natural environments. Audiology literature investigating the test-retest reliability of EMA is scarce. Purpose This article examines the test-retest reliability of EMA in measuring the characteristics of listening contexts and listening experiences. Research Design An observational study. Study Sample Fifty-one older adults with hearing loss. Data Collection and Analysis The study was part of a larger study that examined the effect of hearing aid technologies. The larger study had four trial conditions and outcome was measured using a smartphone-based EMA system. After completing the four trial conditions, participants repeated one of the conditions to examine the EMA test-retest reliability. The EMA surveys contained questions that assessed listening context characteristics including talker familiarity, talker location, and noise location, as well as listening experiences including speech understanding, listening effort, loudness satisfaction, and hearing aid satisfaction. The data from multiple EMA surveys collected by each participant were aggregated in each of the test and retest conditions. Test-retest correlation on the aggregated data was then calculated for each EMA survey question to determine the reliability of EMA. Results At the group level, listening context characteristics and listening experience did not change between the test and retest conditions. The test-retest correlation varied across the EMA questions, with the highest being the questions that assessed talker location (median r = 1.0), reverberation (r = 0.89), and speech understanding (r = 0.85), and the lowest being the items that quantified noise location (median r = 0.63), talker familiarity (r = 0.46), listening effort (r = 0.61), loudness satisfaction (r = 0.60), and hearing aid satisfaction (r = 0.61). Conclusion Several EMA questions yielded appropriate test-retest reliability results. The lower test-retest correlations for some EMA survey questions were likely due to fewer surveys completed by participants and poorly designed questions. Therefore, the present study stresses the importance of using validated questions in EMA. With sufficient numbers of surveys completed by respondents and with appropriately designed survey questions, EMA could have reasonable test-retest reliability in audiology research.more » « less

            Purpose: The goal of this study was to assess the listening behavior and social engagement of cochlear implant (CI) users and normal-hearing (NH) adults in daily life and relate these actions to objective hearing outcomes. Method: Ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) collected using a smartphone app were used to probe patterns of listening behavior in CI users and age-matched NH adults to detect differences in social engagement and listening behavior in daily life. Participants completed very short surveys every 2 hr to provide snapshots of typical, everyday listening and socializing, as well as longer, reflective surveys at the end of the day to assess listening strategies and coping behavior. Speech perception testing, with accompanying ratings of task difficulty, was also performed in a lab setting to uncover possible correlations between objective and subjective listening behavior. Results: Comparisons between speech intelligibility testing and EMA responses showed poorer performing CI users spending more time at home and less time conversing with others than higher performing CI users and their NH peers. Perception of listening difficulty was also very different for CI users and NH listeners, with CI users reporting little difficulty despite poor speech perception performance. However, both CI users and NH listeners spent most of their time in listening environments they considered “not difficult.” CI users also reported using several compensatory listening strategies, such as visual cues, whereas NH listeners did not. Conclusion: Overall, the data indicate systematic differences between how individual CI users and NH adults navigate and manipulate listening and social environments in everyday life.more » « less

            ObjectivesMicrointeraction-based Ecological Momentary Assessment (micro-EMA) is a smartwatch-based tool that delivers single-question surveys, enabling respondents to quickly report their real-time experiences. The objectives of the two studies presented here were to evaluate micro-EMA's psychometric characteristics and feasibility across three response formats (2-point, 5-point, and 10-point scales) for adults with hearing loss. DesignIn the first study, thirty-two participants completed a dual-task experiment aimed at assessing the construct validity, responsiveness, intrusiveness, and test-retest reliability of micro-EMA across the three response formats. Participants listened to sentences at five signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) ranging from −3 to 9 dB relative to the SNR for 50% speech understanding, answered the question “Hearing well?” on smartwatches, and repeated the sentences. In the second study, twenty-one participants wore smartwatches over 6 days. Every 15 min, participants were prompted to answer the question “Hearing well?” using one of the three response formats for 2 days. Participants provided feedback on their experience with micro-EMA. ResultsIn the dual-task experiment, participants reported improved hearing performance in micro-EMA as SNRs and speech recognition scores increased across all three response formats, supporting the tool's construct validity. Statistical models indicated that the 5-point and 10-point scales yielded larger relative changes between SNRs, suggesting higher responsiveness, compared to the 2-point scale. Participants completed surveys significantly faster with the 2-point scale, indicating lower intrusiveness, compared to the 5-point and 10-point scales. Correlation analysis revealed that over two visits 1 week apart, the 2-point scale had the poorest test-retest reliability, while the 5-point scale had the highest. In the field trial, participants completed 79.6% of the prompted surveys, with each participant averaging 42.9 surveys per day. Although participants experienced interruptions due to frequent prompts, annoyance and distraction levels were low. Most participants preferred the 5-point scale. ConclusionsThe dual-task experiment suggested that micro-EMA using the 5-point scale demonstrated superior psychometric characteristics compared to the 2-point and 10-point scales at the tested SNRs. The field trial further supported its feasibility for evaluating hearing performance in adults with hearing loss. Additional research is needed to explore the potential applications of micro-EMA in audiology research.more » « less
