Broadening interest in computer science is a major research goal of the 21st century. Many initiatives use traditional “hooks” to attract students, such as video games and robotics. Unfortunately, this tends to attract only those already interested in computer science. One alternative domain gaining momen- tum in computer science education research is music, which is showing inter- esting results with participants that have previous music knowledge. This paper presents a case study of teaching computer programming with music, in Brazil, to students with limited formal music experience. Through data collected in sur- veys, focus groups, and researchers’ observations, we show that in this context students can still learn and thrive as musical programmers.

            Broadening participation in computer science has been widely stud- ied, creating many diferent techniques to attract, motivate, and engage students. A common meta-strategy is to use an outside do- main as a hook, using the concepts in that domain to teach computer science. These domains are selected to interest the student, but stu- dents often lack a strong background in these domains. Therefore, a strategy designed to increase students’ interest, motivation, and engagement could actually create more barriers for students, who now are faced with learning two new topics. To reduce this poten- tial barrier in the domain of music, this paper presents the use of automated, immediate feedback during programming activities at a summer camp that uses music to teach foundational programming concepts. The feedback guides students musically, correcting notes that are out-of-key or rhythmic phrases that are too long or short, allowing students to focus their learning on the computer science concepts. This paper compares the correctness of students that re- ceived automated feedback with students that did not, which shows the efectiveness of the feedback. Follow up focus groups with stu- dents confrmed this quantitative data, with students claiming that the feedback was not only useful but that the activities would be much more challenging without the feedback.more » « less

            While there is a growing body of research that explores the integration of music and coding in learning environments, much of this work has either emphasized the technical aspects of computer language design or music as a motivational context within which to learn computer science concepts. In this paper, we report on a study in which five undergraduate students with experience in both music and coding completed two creative musical tasks: one using conventional instruments and tools and one using Python code in an online music + coding environment. Inspired by the work of Christopher Small (1998. Musicking: The Meanings of Performing and Listening. University Press of New England), we describe music + coding as a set of interlocking processes which we call computational musicking and explore how practices from both domains are reimagined in this new hybrid context. We introduce semiotic theories of translation and transcription to make sense of the computational musicking process and describe strategies that participants devised in their creative process.more » « less

            null (Ed.)Computer science educators often use multiple creative computing platforms to motivate and support students learning computer science. Arguably, we understand little about the complementary ways in which the various platforms build on students' prior experiences. This study compares two CS+music platforms used by middle school students in a summer camp to understand the unique affordances of each platform at activating and building upon prior music and computing experiences. We assess interest formation through pre and post student surveys and via interviews on the final day of the camp. The findings suggest that using different approaches to CS+music platform design may help engage students with different levels of prior music and coding experience.more » « less

            To engage diverse populations of students who may not self-select into computing courses, a curriculum for a middle school music technology + computer science course that addresses learning standards for both subjects was developed and deployed. Students who engage with the curriculum learn modern music production techniques and computational thinking concepts. This is through a mix of traditional approaches to music technology education (digital audio workstations) and computational approaches via a culturally relevant learning platform that introduces students to coding through music production and remixing. This poster reflects on the last two years of curriculum design and deployment, teacher training, and student and educator engagement and feedback to provide insight into the teaching (and learning) of computational thinking in the music technology classroom.more » « less
