Molecular systematic studies of the anthozoan class Octocorallia have revealed widespread incongruence between phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic classification at all levels of the Linnean hierarchy. Among the soft coral taxa in order Malacalcyonacea, the family Alcyoniidae and its type genus

Alcyonium have both been recognised to be highly polyphyletic. A recent family-level revision of Octocorallia established a number of new families for genera formerly considered to belong to Alcyoniidae, but revision ofAlcyonium is not yet complete. Previous molecular studies have supported the placement ofAlcyonium verseveldti (Benayahu, 1982) in family Cladiellidae rather than Alcyoniidae, phylogenetically distinct from the other three genera in that family. Here we describe a new genus,Ofwegenum gen. nov. to accommodateO. verseveldti comb. nov. and three new species of that genus,O. coronalucis sp. nov. ,O. kloogi sp. nov. , andO. colli sp. nov. , bringing the total number of species in this genus to four.Ofwegenum gen. nov. is a rarely encountered genus so far known from only a few locations spanning the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. We present the morphological characters of each species and use molecular data from both DNA barcoding and target-enrichment of conserved elements to explore species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships within the genus. -
Several specimens of Pachydactylus angolensis, a poorly known Angolan endemic gecko, have recently been collected in southern Angola, considerably increasing its known distribution range. Previous observations led to the hypothesis that two different morphological forms exist in the country — a coastal form and an inland form. Based on the morphological examination of historical and recently collected specimens, as well as on newly generated molecular data, we conducted a taxonomic revision of this putative species complex. The results support the separation of these two forms as two different species. The coastal form belongs to the nominotypic population, while the inland form is here described as a new species, Pachydactylus maiatoi sp. nov. A brief comment on the biogeographical implications of this discovery is also provided.more » « less

The marine ribbon worm genus
Tetranemertes Chernyshev, 1992 currently includes three species: the type speciesT. antonina (Quatrefages, 1846) from the Mediterranean Sea,T. rubrolineata (Kirsteuer, 1965) from Madagascar, andT. hermaphroditica (Gibson, 1982) from Australia. Seven new species are described:T. bifrost sp. nov. ,T. ocelata sp. nov. ,T. majinbuui sp. nov. , andT. pastafariensis sp. nov. from the Caribbean Sea (Panamá), and three species,T. unistriata sp. nov. ,T. paulayi sp. nov. , andT. arabica sp. nov. , from the Indo-West Pacific (Japan and Oman). As a result, an amended morphological diagnosis of the genus is offered. To improve nomenclatural stability, a neotype ofTetranemertes antonina is designated from the Mediterranean. The newly described species, each characterized by features of external appearance and stylet apparatus, as well as by DNA-barcodes, form a well-supported clade withT. antonina on a molecular phylogeny of monostiliferan hoplonemerteans based on partial sequences of COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA. Six of the seven newly described species, as well asT. rubrolineata , possess the unusual character of having a central stylet basis slightly bilobed to deeply forked posteriorly in fully grown individuals, a possible morphological synapomorphy of the genus. In addition, an undescribed species ofTetranemertes is reported from the Eastern Tropical Pacific (Panamá), increasing the total number of known species in the genus to eleven. -
null (Ed.)For the first time in 21 years, a new genus of cardiochiline braconid wasp, Orientocardiochiles Kang & Long, gen. nov. (type species Orientocardiochiles joeburrowi Kang, sp. nov. ), is discovered and described. This genus represents the ninth genus in the Oriental region. Two new species ( O. joeburrowi Kang, sp. nov. and O. nigrofasciatus Long, sp. nov. ) are described and illustrated, and a key to species of the genus, with detailed images, is added. Diagnostic characters of the new genus are analyzed and compared with several other cardiochiline genera to allow the genus to key out properly using an existing generic treatment. The scientific names validated by this paper and morphological data obtained from this project will be utilized and tested in the upcoming genus-level revision of the subfamily based on combined morphological and molecular data.more » « less

We revise the genus
Conostigmus Dahlbom 1858 occurring in Madagascar, based on data from more specimens than were examined for the latest world revision of the genus. Our results yield new information about intraspecific variability and the nature of the atypical latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) observed in Ceraphronoidea. We also investigate cellular processes that underlie body size polyphenism, by utilizing the correspondence between epidermal cells and scutes, polygonal units of leather-like microsculpture. Our results reveal that body size polyphenism in Megaspilidae is most likely related to cell number and not cell size variation, and that cell size differs between epithelial fields of the head and that of the mesosoma. Three species,Conostigmus ballescoracas Dessart, 1997,C. babaiax Dessart, 1996 andC. longulus Dessart, 1997, are redescribed. Females ofC. longulus are described for the first time, as are nine new species:C. bucephalus Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. clavatus Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. fianarantsoaensis Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. lucidus Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. macrocupula , Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. madagascariensis Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. missyhazenae Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov.,C. pseudobabaiax Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov., andC. toliaraensis Mikó and Trietsch sp. nov. A fully illustrated identification key forMalagasy Conostigmus species and a Web Ontology Language (OWL) representation of the taxonomic treatment, including specimen data, nomenclature, and phenotype descriptions, in both natural and formal languages, are provided.
