Title: Reduction of spectroscopic overlap across the Z=8 shell in neutron-rich nuclei
The recent discovery and spectroscopic measurements of O 27 and O 28 suggests the disappearance of the N = 20 shell structure in these neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. We measured one- and two-proton removal cross sections from F 27 and Ne 29 , respectively, extracting spectroscopic factors and comparing them to shell model overlap functions coupled with eikonal reaction model calculations. The invariant mass technique was used to reconstruct the two-body ( O 24 + n ) and three-body ( O 24 + 2 n ) decay energies from knockout reactions of F 27 (106.2 MeV/u) and Ne 29 (112.8 MeV/u) beams impinging on a Be 9 target. The one-proton removal from F 27 strongly populated the ground state of O 26 and the extracted cross section of 3 . 4 1.5 + 0.3 mb agrees with eikonal model calculations that are normalized by the shell model spectroscopic factors and account for the systematic reduction factor observed for single nucleon removal reactions within the models used. For the two-proton removal reaction from Ne 29 an upper limit of 0.08 mb was extracted for populating states in O 27 decaying though the ground state of O 26 . The measured upper limit for the population of the ground state of O 26 in the two-proton removal reaction from Ne 29 indicates a significant difference in the underlying nuclear structure of F 27 and Ne 29 . 1. We realize a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of titanium (Ti) atoms, performing laser cooling on the 498 nm transition between the long-lived 3 d 3 ( F 4 ) 4 s a 5 F 5 metastable state and the 3 d 3 ( F 4 ) 4 p y 5 G 6 o excited state. Without the addition of any repumping light, we observe MOTs of the three stable, I = 0 bosonic isotopes, Ti 46 ,   Ti 48 , and Ti 50 . Up to 8.30 ( 26 ) × 10 5 Ti 48 atoms are trapped at a maximum density of 1.3 ( 4 ) × 10 11 cm 3 and at a temperature of 90 ( 15 ) µ K . By measuring the decay of the MOT, we constrain the leakage branching ratio of the cooling transition ( 2.5 × 10 6 ) and the two-body loss coefficient ( 2 × 10 10 cm 3 s 1 ). Our approach to laser cooling Ti can be applied to other transition metals, enabling a significant expansion of the elements that can be laser cooled. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  2. Here we report on the direct measurement of the resonance strengths of the E R lab = 647 keV and 1842 keV resonances in the Ca 40 ( p , γ ) Sc 41 reaction. At novae temperatures, 0.2 < T 9 < 0.7 , the Ca 40 ( p , γ ) Sc 41 reaction is governed by the low energy resonance at E R lab = 647 keV , whereas the E R lab = 1842 keV resonance serves as a normalization standard for nuclear reaction experiments within the astrophysically relevant energy range. For the E R lab = 647 keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ω γ = ( 2.51 ± 0 . 09 stat ± 0 . 22 syst ) meV , with an uncertainty a factor of 2.5 smaller than the previous direct measurement value. For the E R lab = 1842 keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ω γ = ( 0.148 ± 0 . 006 stat ± 0 . 013 syst ) eV , which is consistent with previous studies but deviates by 2 σ from the most recent measurement. Our results suggest Ca 40 to be a strong waiting point in the nucleosynthesis path of oxygen-neon (ONe) novae. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  3. Asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the production of most of the heavy isotopes beyond Sr observed in the solar system. Among them, isotopes shielded from the r -process contribution by their stable isobars are defined as s -only nuclei. For a long time the abundance of Pb 204 , the heaviest s -only isotope, has been a topic of debate because state-of-the-art stellar models appeared to systematically underestimate its solar abundance. Besides the impact of uncertainties from stellar models and galactic chemical evolution simulations, this discrepancy was further obscured by rather divergent theoretical estimates for the neutron capture cross section of its radioactive precursor in the neutron-capture flow, Tl 204 ( t 1 / 2 = 3.78 yr ), and by the lack of experimental data on this reaction. We present the first ever neutron capture measurement on Tl 204 , conducted at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF, employing a sample of only 9 mg of Tl 204 produced at the Institute Laue Langevin high flux reactor. By complementing our new results with semiempirical calculations we obtained, at the s -process temperatures of k T 8 keV and k T 30 keV , Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) of 580(168) mb and 260(90) mb, respectively. These figures are about 3% lower and 20% higher than the corresponding values widely used in astrophysical calculations, which were based only on theoretical calculations. By using the new Tl 204 MACS, the uncertainty arising from the Tl 204 ( n , γ ) cross section on the s -process abundance of Pb 204 has been reduced from 30 % down to + 8 % / 6 % , and the s -process calculations are in agreement with the latest solar system abundance of Pb 204 reported by K. 4. The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy ( n , p ) and ( p , n ) reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of ( p , n ) reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the Fe 58 ( p , n ) Co 58 reaction in inverse kinematics with a 3.66 ± 0.12 MeV/nucleon Fe 58 beam (corresponding to 3.69 ± 0.12 MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of 20.3 ± 6.3  mb and served as a proof of principle experiment for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. This novel approach paves the way for studying astrophysically important ( p , n ) reactions on unstable nuclei produced at FRIB. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  5. This paper details the first application of a software tagging algorithm to reduce radon-induced backgrounds in liquid noble element time projection chambers, such as XENON1T and XENONnT. The convection velocity field in XENON1T was mapped out using Rn 222 and Po 218 events, and the rms convection speed was measured to be 0.30 ± 0.01 cm / s . Given this velocity field, Pb 214 background events can be tagged when they are followed by Bi 214 and Po 214 decays, or preceded by Po 218 decays. This was achieved by evolving a point cloud in the direction of a measured convection velocity field, and searching for Bi 214 and Po 214 decays or Po 218 decays within a volume defined by the point cloud. In XENON1T, this tagging system achieved a Pb 214 background reduction of 6.2 0.9 + 0.4 % with an exposure loss of 1.8 ± 0.2 % , despite the timescales of convection being smaller than the relevant decay times. We show that the performance can be improved in XENONnT, and that the performance of such a software-tagging approach can be expected to be further improved in a diffusion-limited scenario. Finally, a similar method might be useful to tag the cosmogenic Xe 137 background, which is relevant to the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Published by the American Physical Society2024
