Title: Redescription of Lepidodactylus flaviocularis (Squamata: Gekkonidae), with the description of a new species from Makira Island, Solomon Islands
Several species of geckos of the genus Lepidodactylus are endemic to the Solomon Islands and very poorly known. I redescribe one of these, L. flaviocularis, from Guadalcanal, based on examination of a second, newly obtained specimen and quantification of diagnostically useful features of the digits. I also describe a closely related new species from nearby Makira Island in the southern Solomon Islands. Both species are distinguished by their large number of undivided subdigital lamellae, extensive toe webbing, and a continuous row of enlarged precloacal/femoral scales. The new species is distinguished from L. flaviocularis by a number of scalational features and the color of the circumorbial scales. Both species are inhabitants of interior forest, and it remains uncertain whether they are naturally rare, rare due to interactions with invasive species, or simply have cryptic ecological habits, though the last seems most likely. Current evidence for both species is consistent with the taxon-cycle hypothesis, which posits ecological displacement to inland habitats of ancient island inhabitants by newer colonizers, but this remains to be critically tested. The limited pool of specimens available for both species necessitates assessing the IUCN conservation status of each as Data Deficient.   more » « less

  1. We describe a new species of Lepidodactylus from Umboi Island, just to the west of New Britain. It is a member of the Lepidodactylus guppyi Group and can be distinguished from all other Melanesian Lepidodactylus by aspects of digital scalation, digital webbing, enlarged femoral/precloacal scales, and color pattern. It is genetically distinct from its closest congeners, and genetic and morphological data indicate that the new species is most similar among named species to Lepidodactylus guppyi from the Solomon Islands, but it diverged from this species and other close relatives approximately 8 MYA or longer at a time prior to the existence of the island that it now occupies. The new species is known from only three individuals collected on a single tree, and efforts to find more animals in what seemed good habitat nearby were unsuccessful. This duplicates the pattern of apparent rarity seen for many Lepidodactylus species. Sufficient habitat exists on Umboi Island for arboreal geckos, suggesting that the species is not actually endangered but is ecologically cryptic. However, lack of needed information leads us to assess this species’ conservation status as Data Deficient.

  2. The Pacificellinae are a group of small, high-spired land snails distributed on islands across the Pacific. Some species are endemic to particular island groups, but others have wide geographic distributions, several of which have been attributed to anthropogenic transport between islands before western contact. We used DNA sequence data (COI, 16S, ITS2, 28S) from recently collected and historical specimens to estimate a phylogeny of the Pacificellinae, with a focus on Hawaiian species. Phylogenetic analyses support recognizing Lamellidea and Pacificella as distinct genera and indicate that the genus group Tornatellinops should be regarded as a synonym of Lamellidea. The number of taxa defined by species delimitation analyses (ASAP, bPTP, mPTP) varies widely, with between 6 and 42 species estimated in the Hawaiian Islands. These candidate species hypotheses were evaluated in an integrative framework, including shell morphology, geography, and a multilocus phylogeny, to revise the taxonomy of Hawaiian pacificellines. Four Lamellidea species and two Pacificella species are recognized from the Hawaiian Islands, including two widespread species introduced to Hawaiʻi from the South Pacific. Lamellidea peponum in Hawaiʻi shows little genetic divergence from Polynesian specimens previously referred to L. oblonga, and the name L. oblonga is now regarded as a junior synonym. Lamellidea polygnampta is recognized here from across the Hawaiian Islands, L. cylindrica from the island of O‘ahu, and the lowland species, L. extincta, from the main Hawaiian Islands and the Northwestern Islands. The only Pacificella specimens found in Hawai‘i in modern surveys are more closely related to specimens of P. variabilis from Polynesia than to historical specimens of P. baldwini, indicating that the only Pacificella species now found in the main Hawaiian Islands appears to be introduced. Pacificellines have declined in abundance in Hawai‘i over the last century and the two species L. extincta and P. baldwini, formerly present across the Hawaiian Islands, are now either critically endangered or extinct.

  3. Australo-Papuan snakes of the genus Dendrelaphis have historically been a taxonomically confusing group, with 28 nomina applied to snakes in this region. Recent taxonomic revision has established the presence of nine valid species in this area, though few specimens were examined from across most of the large island of New Guinea. This lacuna, along with unreliable application of names to Melanesian Dendrelaphis in museum collections, means that the ranges of each species remain to be properly resolved on New Guinea and islands immediately to the east. Herein I examine the taxonomic status of Dendrelaphis specimens from outlying large islands in Milne Bay Province, off the southeastern tip of New Guinea, and I find that each of the three large islands of the Louisiade Archipelago, as well as Woodlark Island, contain their own endemic species. Based on hemipenial morphology, three of these species (D. anthracina sp. nov., D. melanarkys sp. nov., D. roseni sp. nov.) belong to the D. papuensis group and the last (D. atra sp. nov.) to the D. punctulatus group. Identification of the first three species requires reassessment and rediagnosis of D. papuensis. Two of the new species are characterized by ontogenetic melanization of animals, and a third is also uniformly black with a white chin when adult, though juveniles are unavailable to determine whether melanization also occurs ontogenetically in that species. Melanesian species of Dendrelaphis are largely diagnosed by unique color-pattern features, and this work identifies additional diagnostic features of color pattern for these species and confirms the critical importance of hemipenial differences in distinguishing among similar-appearing species in this region.

  4. Islands are well known for their unique biodiversity and significance in evolutionary and ecological studies. Nevertheless, the extinction of island species accounts for most human-caused extinctions in recent time scales, which have accelerated in recent centuries. Pigeons and doves (Columbidae) are noteworthy for the high number of island endemics, as well as for the risks those species have faced since human arrival. On Caribbean islands, no other columbid has generated more phylogenetic interest and uncertainty than the blue-headed quail-dove,Starnoenas cyanocephala. This endangered Cuban endemic has been considered more similar, both behaviourally and phenotypically, to Australasian species than to the geographically closer ‘quail-dove’ (Geotrygons.l.) species of the Western Hemisphere. Here, we use whole genome sequencing fromStarnoenasand other newly sequenced columbids in combination with sequence data from previous publications to investigate its relationships. Phylogenomic analyses, which represent 35 of the 51 genera currently comprising the Columbidae, reveal that the blue-headed quail-dove is the sole representative of a lineage diverging early in the radiation of columbids.Starnoenasis sister to the species-rich subfamily Columbinae, which is found worldwide. As a highly distinctive evolutionary lineage lacking close modern relatives, we recommend elevating the conservation priority ofStarnoenas.

  5. Islands have long represented natural laboratories for studying many aspects of ecology and evolutionary biology, from speciation to community assembly. One aspect that has been well documented is the correlation between island size and taxonomic diversity, likely due to decreased complexity and population size on small islands. This same logic can apply to genetic diversity, which should predictably decrease with effective population size. The island size–diversity correlation has received support over the years but often focuses on single metrics of genetic diversity. Here, we useZosteropswhite-eyes in the Solomon Islands to study the correlation between island size and various metrics related to genetic diversity, including runs of homozygosity and fixation of transposable elements. We find that almost all these metrics strongly correlate with island size, and in turn with each other. We infer that island size is independently correlated with these different variables, demonstrating that population size impacts genomic metrics of diversity in a variety of ways across temporal and hierarchical scales.
