Title: Photoproduction of K+K− Pairs in Ultraperipheral Collisions
K + K pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced ϕ ( 1020 ) mesons or directly as nonresonant K + K pairs. Measurements of K + K photoproduction probe the couplings between the ϕ ( 1020 ) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of K + K pairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct K + K production. There is significant K + K production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range 1.1 < M K K < 1.4 GeV / c 2 above the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, for rapidity | y K K | < 0.8 and p T , K K < 0.1 GeV / c , the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is d σ / d y = 3.37 ± 0.61 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) mb . The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system W γ Pb , n ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for ϕ ( 1020 ) photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of ϕ ( 1020 ) decays, direct K + K photoproduction, and interference between the two.   1. The first observation of the decay Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ to Ξ b J / ψ Ξ are presented. The J / ψ and ψ ( 2 S ) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s = 13 TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb 1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B ( Ξ b ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ ) / B ( Ξ b J / ψ Ξ ) = 0.8 4 0.19 + 0.21 ( stat ) ± 0.10 ( syst ) ± 0.02 ( B ) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξ b ( 5945 ) 0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξ b π + final state, where the Ξ b baryon is reconstructed through the decays J / ψ Ξ , ψ ( 2 S ) Ξ , J / ψ Λ K , and J / ψ Σ 0 K . Finally, the fraction of Ξ b baryons produced from Ξ b ( 5945 ) 0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. The production of the ψ ( 2 S ) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ ( 2 S ) and J / ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region p T < 12 GeV / c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in p p collisions, by forming the double ratio [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] Pb Pb / [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] p p . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ ( 2 S ) is suppressed by a factor of 2 with respect to the J / ψ . The ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification factor R AA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and p T . The results show that the ψ ( 2 S ) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to 3 with respect to p p . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of R AA with higher- p T results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  3. A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  4. The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  5. Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb 1 . The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom. By comparing the ratio of the measured three- and two-particle energy correlator distributions with theoretical calculations that resum collinear emissions at approximate next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to a next-to-leading-order calculation, the strong coupling is determined at the Z boson mass: α S ( m Z ) = 0.122 9 0.0050 + 0.0040 , the most precise α S ( m Z ) value obtained using jet substructure observables. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN
