Title: Study of the p–p–K$$^{+}$$ and p–p–K$$^{-}$$ dynamics using the femtoscopy technique
Abstract The interactions of kaons (K) and antikaons ($$\mathrm {\overline{K}}$$ K ¯ ) with few nucleons (N) were studied so far using kaonic atom data and measurements of kaon production and interaction yields in nuclei. Some details of the three-body KNN and$$\mathrm {\overline{K}}$$ K ¯ NN dynamics are still not well understood, mainly due to the overlap with multi-nucleon interactions in nuclei. An alternative method to probe the dynamics of three-body systems with kaons is to study the final state interaction within triplet of particles emitted in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, which are free from effects due to the presence of bound nucleons. This Letter reports the first femtoscopic study of p–p–K$$^+$$ + and p–p–K$$^-$$ - correlations measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The analysis shows that the measured p–p–K$$^+$$ + and p–p–K$$^-$$ - correlation functions can be interpreted in terms of pairwise interactions in the triplets, indicating that the dynamics of such systems is dominated by the two-body interactions without significant contributions from three-body effects or bound states.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields of anti-$$\Sigma $$ Σ hyperons ($$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± ) have been measured in$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment. Measurements are performed via the newly accessed decay channel$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } \!\!\rightarrow \mathrm{\overline{n}} \pi ^{\pm }$$ Σ ¯ ± n ¯ π ± . A new method of antineutron reconstruction with the PHOS electromagnetic spectrometer is developed and applied to this analysis. The$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T spectra of$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± are measured in the range$$0.5<3$$ 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/$$c$$ c and compared to predictions of the PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. The EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models provide the best descriptions of the measured spectra both in$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions, while models which do not account for multiparton interactions provide a considerably worse description at high$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T . The total yields of$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± in both$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions are compared to predictions of the Thermal-FIST model and dynamical models PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4. All models reproduce the total yields in both colliding systems within uncertainties. The nuclear modification factors$$R_\textrm{pPb}$$ R pPb for both$$\overline{\Sigma }^{+} $$ Σ ¯ + and$$\overline{\Sigma }^{-} $$ Σ ¯ - are evaluated and compared to those of protons,$$\Lambda $$ Λ and$$\Xi $$ Ξ hyperons, and predictions of EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. No deviations of$$R_\textrm{pPb}$$ R pPb for$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± from the model predictions or measurements for other hadrons are found within uncertainties.

  2. Abstract The interaction between pions and nucleons plays a crucial role in hadron physics. It represents a fundamental building block of the low-energy QCD dynamics and is subject to several resonance excitations. This work studies the$$\text {p--}\uppi ^{\pm }$$ p-- π ± dynamics using femtoscopic correlations in high-multiplicity pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ s = 13  TeV measured by ALICE at the LHC. As the final-state interaction between protons and pions is well constrained by scattering experiments and the study of pionic hydrogen, the results give access to information on the particle-emitting source in pp collisions using the femtoscopy methods. The scaling of the source size of primordial protons and pions against their pair transverse mass is extracted. The results are compared with the source sizes studied with p–p,$$\text {p--K}^+$$ p--K + , and$$\uppi ^\pm $$ π ± –$$\uppi ^\pm $$ π ± pairs by ALICE in the same collision system and are found to be in agreement for the different particle pairs. This reinforces recent findings by ALICE of a common emission source for all hadron-pairs in pp collisions at LHC energies. Furthermore, the$$\text {p--p--}\uppi ^{\pm }$$ p--p-- π ± systems are studied using three-particle femtoscopy in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ s = 13  TeV. The presence of three-body effects is analyzed utilizing the cumulant expansion method. In this formalism, the known two-body interactions are subtracted in order to isolate the three-body effects. For both,$$\text {p--p--}\uppi ^{+}$$ p--p-- π + and$$\text {p--p--}\uppi ^{-}$$ p--p-- π - , a non-zero cumulant is found, indicating effects beyond pairwise interactions. These results give information on the coupling of the pion to multiple nucleons.

  3. Abstract The total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity$$\textrm{d}\sigma ({{\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}}})/\textrm{d}y$$ d σ ( c c ¯ ) / d y , and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species$$f(\textrm{c}\rightarrow {\textrm{h}}_{\textrm{c}})$$ f ( c h c ) , are measured for the first time in p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}} = 5.02~\text {Te}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\textrm{V} $$ s NN = 5.02 Te V at midrapidity ($$-0.96<0.04$$ - 0.96 < y < 0.04 in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species:$$\textrm{D}^{0}$$ D 0 ,$$\textrm{D}^{+}$$ D + ,$$\textrm{D}_\textrm{s}^{+}$$ D s + , and$$\mathrm {J/\psi }$$ J / ψ mesons, and$$\Lambda _\textrm{c}^{+}$$ Λ c + and$$\Xi _\textrm{c}^{0}$$ Ξ c 0 baryons. The resulting cross section is$$ \textrm{d}\sigma ({{\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}}})/\textrm{d}y =219.6 \pm 6.3\;(\mathrm {stat.}) {\;}_{-11.8}^{+10.5}\;(\mathrm {syst.}) {\;}_{-2.9}^{+8.3}\;(\mathrm {extr.})\pm 5.4\;(\textrm{BR})\pm 4.6\;(\mathrm {lumi.}) \pm 19.5\;(\text {rapidity shape})+15.0\;(\Omega _\textrm{c}^{0})\;\textrm{mb} $$ d σ ( c c ¯ ) / d y = 219.6 ± 6.3 ( stat . ) - 11.8 + 10.5 ( syst . ) - 2.9 + 8.3 ( extr . ) ± 5.4 ( BR ) ± 4.6 ( lumi . ) ± 19.5 ( rapidity shape ) + 15.0 ( Ω c 0 ) mb , which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p–Pb collisions compared with$$\mathrm {e^{+}e^{-}}$$ e + e - and$$\mathrm {e^{-}p}$$ e - p collisions. The$$p_\textrm{T}$$ p T -integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks,$$R_\textrm{pPb}({\textrm{c}}\overline{\textrm{c}})= 0.91 \pm 0.04\;\mathrm{(stat.)} ^{+0.08}_{-0.09}\;\mathrm{(syst.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.03}\;\mathrm{(extr.)} \pm 0.03\;\mathrm{(lumi.)}$$ R pPb ( c c ¯ ) = 0.91 ± 0.04 ( stat . ) - 0.09 + 0.08 ( syst . ) - 0.03 + 0.05 ( extr . ) ± 0.03 ( lumi . ) , is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions.

  4. Abstract A search is reported for charge-parity$$CP$$ CP violation in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ D 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays, using data collected in proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ s = 13 Te V recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018. The analysis uses a dedicated data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 , which consists of about 10 billion events containing a pair of b hadrons, nearly all of which decay to charm hadrons. The flavor of the neutral D meson is determined by the pion charge in the reconstructed decays$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*+}}} \rightarrow {{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} $$ D + D 0 π + and$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*-}}} \rightarrow {\overline{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ D - D ¯ 0 π - . The$$CP$$ CP asymmetry in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ D 0 K S 0 K S 0 is measured to be$$A_{CP} ({{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} ) = (6.2 \pm 3.0 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.8)\%$$ A CP ( K S 0 K S 0 ) = ( 6.2 ± 3.0 ± 0.2 ± 0.8 ) % , where the three uncertainties represent the statistical uncertainty, the systematic uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the measurement of the$$CP$$ CP asymmetry in the$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ D 0 K S 0 π + π - decay. This is the first$$CP$$ CP asymmetry measurement by CMS in the charm sector as well as the first to utilize a fully hadronic final state.

  5. Abstract The transverse momentum ($$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T ) differential production cross section of the promptly produced charm-strange baryon$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξ c 0 (and its charge conjugate$$\overline{\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}}$$ Ξ c 0 ¯ ) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into$$\mathrm{\pi ^{+}}\Xi ^{-}$$ π + Ξ - in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$$ s NN = 5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξ c 0 nuclear modification factor ($$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ R pPb ), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p–Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the$$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ R pPb of$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ Λ c + baryons. The ratios between the$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T -differential production cross section of$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξ c 0 baryons and those of$$\mathrm {D^0}$$ D 0 mesons and$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ Λ c + baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ Ξ c 0 baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p–Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model that includes string formation beyond leading-colour approximation or in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T -integrated cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ Ξ c 0 -baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p–Pb collisions at midrapidity.
