Title: Inclusive VR through Inclusive Co-Design with Neurodiverse Learners
This paper reports on a fully inclusive co-design process of an informal VR science game intended to be accessible to a broad range of learners. The co-design embraces the `nothing about us without' us movement by ensuring that stakeholder voices have a prominent role throughout the design process. In the project described in this paper, professional designers and researchers work with a team of neurodiverse stakeholders as peer members of the design team. The design process is described, and the findings based on feedback from all co-design participants is reported. Recommendations for others in the field are provided to help guide those interested in implementing an effective and inclusive co-design process.  more » « less

  1. There is a lack of access to critical knowledge on machine ethics and the impacts of technology on individuals and communities in everyday life. This project pioneers an inclusive curriculum design process to broaden accessibility to machine ethics education. Our approach uses a ''source'' course to develop materials for seven "target" courses. The source course is a machine ethics curriculum development course in which students and faculty collaboratively build curricular materials for integration into non-computer science courses. Here we describe the development of the ''source'' course using a curriculum co-creation process that leverages student and faculty expertise. The process emphasizes an inclusive design approach, rooted in continuous stakeholder feedback and consistent, transparent communication. The products of this process include course materials that incorporate underrepresented ethical frameworks. Additionally, it features peer-reviewed journal assignments that promote reflective learning and sharing of diverse perspectives, as well as a final module project in which students collaborate with faculty to co-create curricular materials. Our approach aims to broaden a culturally relevant understanding of ethical challenges in technology while ensuring that the curriculum resonates with diverse student backgrounds. Our presentation will describe key insights about the process and products of our curriculum design.

This study conducts a novel approach to redesign EarSketch, an expressive computer science (CS) learning environment that inte- grates music composition into computing education, with a specific focus on inclusivity for blind and visually impaired (BVI) learners. This approach centers on the participation of teachers, students, and the community as co-designers, leveraging their insights and ex- periences to enhance the program’s accessibility and effectiveness. By actively involving the stakeholders in the development process, the study aims to address the unique educational challenges and needs of learners who are visually impaired more effectively. The participatory design approach is expected to not only maintain the intrinsic appeal of EarSketch but also to expand its accessibility, ensuring that it becomes a more inclusive tool in computer sci- ence education. The ultimate goal is to establish a more adaptable and inclusive educational paradigm within STEAM, particularly in computing education and music, that is responsive to the diverse needs of all students, including those with visual impairments. The contributions of this paper are design recommendations based on our data that can be applied to the design of EarSketch and other expressive CS environments for BVI learners.

  3. In this paper, a learning module is introduced to teach undergraduate engineering students about the principles of haptics and inclusive design thinking through wearable technology. To that end, a novel wearable haptic (touch) device was created, referred to as the HapConnect, that contains modular vibration components for student teams to explore the use of haptics in a simple context, design and create their own versions of the device, and deploy it in a use-inspired setting. Through a series of lecture and hands-on design sessions, student teams were tasked with employing the HapConnect to navigate through a maze exclusively by the sense of touch. This paper evaluates student confidence in topics – such as haptics, human perception, wearable devices, and inclusive design – discussed throughout the module, feedback and performance of the HapConnect, and team design choices to complete their activity. Results indicate that student learning and confidence increased throughout the activity, while each team’s success in the maze was attributed to their differing design choices.

  4. In this work-in-progress paper, we present a study design for exploring strategies to involve engineering faculty in inclusive teaching practices, which are practices that integrate informal mentoring strategies into everyday communication with students in efforts to improve their interest, capacity, and belongingness in engineering. As part of a larger NSF-funded study on the interactions of engineering professional formation with diversity and inclusion, we will use semi-structured interviews to investigate an electrical and computer engineering (ECE) faculty’s intention to implement inclusive teaching practices, using Fishbein and Ajzen’s reasoned action model to define intention. The interviews will be focused around an inclusive teaching “tip sheet” that was recently distributed to the ECE faculty. These interviews will allow us to characterize factors that influence the development of such an intention within the context of an engineering department, in order to make recommendations for administration.

  5. Over the last decade, extensive growth in digital educational content has opened up new opportunities for teaching and learning. Despite such advancements, digital learning experiences often omit one ofour richest and earliest learning modalities - touch. This lack of haptic (touch) interaction creates a growing gap in supporting inclusive, embodied learning experiences digitally. Our research centers on the development ofinclusive learning tools that can flexibly adapt for use in different learning contexts to support learners with a wide range of needs, co-designed with students with disabilities. In this paper, we focus on the development of a tangible device for geometry learning - the Tangible Manipulative for Quadrilaterals (TMQ). We detail the design evolution of the TMQ and present two user studies investigating the affordances o ft h eI M and the user strategies employed when explored in isolation and in tandem with a two-dimensional touchscreen-based rendering ofa quadrilateral. Findings illustrate the affordances of the I M Oo v e r traditional, static media and its ability to serve as an inclusive geometry learning tool.
