We propose a method to measure anisotropic stiffness of microtissues and cells by two indentations in orthogonal directions using our novel toroidal probe. Our preliminary results indicate that this approach is applicable in measuring anisotropic stiffness of aligned tissues and cells. This method will provide researchers with a simple and cost-effective means for measuring mechanical anisotropy of micro-scale samples.

Development of a Process Chain to Measure Freeform Optics using an Optical Coordinate Measuring Machine
A process chain for measuring and analyzing freeform optics is developed for the OptiPro UltraSurf 5x 400 optical coordinate measuring machine. A test case of molded BD6 Alvarez lenses demonstrates measurement repeatability and reproducibility.

Trust is fundamental to effective visual data communication between the visualization designer and the reader. Although personal experience and preference influence readers’ trust in visualizations, visualization designers can leverage design techniques to create visualizations that evoke a "calibrated trust," at which readers arrive after critically evaluating the information presented. To systematically understand what drives readers to engage in "calibrated trust," we must first equip ourselves with reliable and valid methods for measuring trust. Computer science and data visualization researchers have not yet reached a consensus on a trust definition or metric, which are essential to building a comprehensive trust model in human-data interaction. On the other hand, social scientists and behavioral economists have developed and perfected metrics that can measure generalized and interpersonal trust, which the visualization community can reference, modify, and adapt for our needs. In this paper, we gather existing methods for evaluating trust from other disciplines and discuss how we might use them to measure, define, and model trust in data visualization research. Specifically, we discuss quantitative surveys from social sciences, trust games from behavioral economics, measuring trust through measuring belief updating, and measuring trust through perceptual methods. We assess the potential issues with these methods and consider how we can systematically apply them to visualization research.more » « less

Vollstedt, M. (Ed.)Can fostering mathematical creativity explicitly in a calculus I course impact students’ mathematical identity? As a part of a larger research project exploring this question, a quantitative research study was developed to explore six aspects of student mathematical identity along with student perception of creativity-fostering instructor behavior. Analysis of pre- and post-semester survey data indicated that the instruments measuring aspects of student identity had strong reliability and good structure validity. Correlational analysis of the six aspects of student identity provided evidence that students’ views of mathematics as a creative endeavor impacted the formation of self-efficacy in mathematics. The instrument measuring creativity-fostering instruction demonstrated low reliability and internal inconsistencies. Methodological issues related to measuring creativity-fostering instruction and directions for future research studying creativity-fostering and student identity are discussed.more » « less

Abstract. A new technique, named “HailPixel”, is introduced for measuring the maximum dimension and intermediate dimension of hailstones from aerial imagery. The photogrammetry procedure applies a convolutional neural network for robust detection of hailstones against complex backgrounds and an edge detection method for measuring the shape of identified hailstones. This semi-automated technique is capable of measuring many thousands of hailstones within a single survey, which is several orders of magnitude larger (e.g. 10 000 or more hailstones) than population sizes from existing sensors (e.g. a hail pad). Comparison with a co-located hail pad for an Argentinian hailstorm event during the RELAMPAGO project demonstrates the larger population size of the HailPixel survey significantly improves the shape and tails of the observed hail size distribution. When hail fall is sparse, such as during large and giant hail events, the large survey area of this technique is especially advantageous for resolving the hail size distribution.more » « less

On 16-17 December 2020, CAIDA hosted the 11th interdisciplinary Workshop on Internet Economics (WIE) in a virtual Zoom conference. This year our goal was to gather feedback from researchers on their experiences using CAIDA’s data for economics or policy research. We invited all researchers who reported use of CAIDA data in these disciplines. We discussed their successes and challenges of using the data, and how CAIDA could help these fields via Internet measurement and data curation. To avoid Zoom fatigue, we had a conversation-focused rather than presentation-focused workshop. Research topics we discussed included: Internet data for macroeconomics; connectivity and its effect on economic interdependence; effects of the EU’s new GDPR on internet interconnection; measuring corporate cyber risk; measuring work-from-home trends; measuring the economic value of open source software; and more generally how to best support evidence-based policymaking.more » « less
