Title: An extremely energetic cosmic ray observed by a surface detector array
Cosmic rays are energetic charged particles from extraterrestrial sources, with the highest-energy events thought to come from extragalactic sources. Their arrival is infrequent, so detection requires instruments with large collecting areas. In this work, we report the detection of an extremely energetic particle recorded by the surface detector array of the Telescope Array experiment. We calculate the particle’s energy as 244±29  stat.  76+51 syst.  exa–electron volts (~40 joules). Its arrival direction points back to a void in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Possible explanations include a large deflection by the foreground magnetic field, an unidentified source in the local extragalactic neighborhood, or an incomplete knowledge of particle physics.  more » « less

  3. Abstract A measurement of the top quark pair ($$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ tt¯ ) production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC in autumn 2017, in dedicated runs with low-energy and low-intensity conditions with respect to the default configuration, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb−1. The measurement is performed using events with one electron or muon, and multiple jets, at least one of them being identified as originating from a b quark (b tagged). Events are classified based on the number of all reconstructed jets and of b-tagged jets. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to enhance the separation between the signal and backgrounds. The measured cross section is$$ 62.5\pm 1.6{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.5}^{+2.6}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.2\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $$ 62.5±1.6 stat2.5+2.6 syst±1.2lumi pb. A combination with the result in the dilepton channel based on the same data set yields a value of 62.3 ± 1.5 (stat) ± 2.4 (syst) ± 1.2 (lumi) pb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of$$ {69.5}_{-3.7}^{+3.5} $$ 69.53.7+3.5 pb at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

  4. Abstract Measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Events containing one electron and one muon in the final state are analysed. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events is used to separate the signal from the dominant$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ tt¯ background. A cross section of$$ 79.2\pm 0.9{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-8.0}^{+7.7}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.2\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $$ 79.2±0.9 stat8.0+7.7 syst±1.2lumi pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance, and the requirement of exactly one jet coming from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. The resulting distributions are unfolded to particle level and agree with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

  5. Abstract ThepT-differential production cross sections of non-prompt D0, D+, and$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ mesons originating from beauty-hadron decays are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y|<0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons,fs/(fu+fd), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in different collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre-of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-mesonpT-differential production cross section at higher$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s . Finally, the$$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ bb¯ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ , and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ hadron measurements, obtaining$$ \textrm{d}\sigma /\textrm{d}y=75.2\pm 3.2\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 5.2{\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)}_{-3.2}^{+12.3}\left(\textrm{extrap}.\right) $$ dσ/dy=75.2±3.2 stat. ±5.2 syst. 3.2+12.3 extrap. μb.
