Title: Effective field theory and inelastic dark matter results from XENON1T

In this work, we expand on the XENON1T nuclear recoil searches to study the individual signals of dark matter interactions from operators up to dimension eight in a chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) and a model of inelastic dark matter (iDM). We analyze data from two science runs of the XENON1T detector totaling1t×yrexposure. For these analyses, we extended the region of interest from[4.9,40.9]keVNRto[4.9,54.4]keVNRto enhance our sensitivity for signals that peak at nonzero energies. We show that the data are consistent with the background-only hypothesis, with a small background overfluctuation observed peaking between 20 and50keVNR, resulting in a maximum local discovery significance of1.7σfor theVectorVectorstrangeChEFT channel for a dark matter particle of70GeV/c2and1.8σfor an iDM particle of50GeV/c2with a mass splitting of100keV/c2. For each model, we report 90% confidence level upper limits. We also report upper limits on three benchmark models of dark matter interaction using ChEFT where we investigate the effect of isospin-breaking interactions. We observe rate-driven cancellations in regions of the isospin-breaking couplings, leading to up to 6 orders of magnitude weaker upper limits with respect to the isospin-conserving case.

  1. Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the Universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultrahigh energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultralight sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angleθmbetween active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly,θm1.5×106(MX/109GeV)2for a massMXof the dark-matter particle between108GeVand1011GeV.

  2. K+Kpairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproducedϕ(1020)mesons or directly as nonresonantK+Kpairs. Measurements ofK+Kphotoproduction probe the couplings between theϕ(1020)and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction ofK+Kpairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of directK+Kproduction. There is significantK+Kproduction at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range1.1<MKK<1.4GeV/c2above theϕ(1020)resonance, for rapidity|yKK|<0.8andpT,KK<0.1GeV/c, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section isdσ/dy=3.37±0.61(stat)±0.15(syst)mb. The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) systemWγPb,nranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected forϕ(1020)photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting ofϕ(1020)decays, directK+Kphotoproduction, and interference between the two. The confidence regions for the amplitude and relative phase angle for directK+Kphotoproduction are presented.

  3. A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range ofΣcD¯andΛc+D¯final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states toΣcDandΛc+D, is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of5.7fb1recorded by the LHCb detector ats=13TeV. Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of theΛc+baryon in theΛc+pKπ+decay mode. The known pentaquark states are also investigated, and their signal yields are found to be consistent with zero in all cases.

  4. The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production ofJ/ψvector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam|t|variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity,|y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair ofsNN=5.02TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-xrange(0.31.4)×103. Cross sections are given in five|t|intervals in the range0.04<|t|<1GeV2and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a|t|dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

  5. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino (νe) and muon neutrino (νμ) charged-current interactions in theFASERνemulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of theFASERνvolume was analyzed after exposure to9.5fb1ofs=13.6TeVppdata. Four (eight)νe(νμ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of5.2σ(5.7σ). This is the first direct observation ofνeinteractions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energyνeandνμever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleonσ/Eνis measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) forνe(νμ) to be(1.20.7+0.8)×1038cm2GeV1[(0.5±0.2)×1038cm2GeV1], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.
