Collective wind farm flow control, where wind turbines are operated in an individually suboptimal strategy to benefit the aggregate farm, has demonstrated potential to reduce wake interactions and increase farm energy production. However, existing wake models used for flow control often estimate the thrust and power of yaw-misaligned turbines using simplified empirical expressions that require expensive calibration data and do not extrapolate accurately between turbine models. The thrust, wake velocity deficit, wake deflection and power of a yawed wind turbine depend on its induced velocity. Here, we extend classical one-dimensional momentum theory to model the induction of a yaw-misaligned actuator disk. Analytical expressions for the induction, thrust, initial wake velocities and power are developed as a function of the yaw angle ( $$\gamma$$ ) and thrust coefficient. The analytical model is validated against large eddy simulations of a yawed actuator disk. Because the induction depends on the yaw and thrust coefficient, the power generated by a yawed actuator disk will always be greater than a $$\cos ^3(\gamma )$$ model suggests. The power lost due to yaw misalignment depends on the thrust coefficient. An analytical expression for the thrust coefficient that maximizes power, depending on the yaw, is developed and validated. Finally, using the developed induction model as an initial condition for a turbulent far-wake model, we demonstrate how combining wake steering and thrust (induction) control can increase array power, compared to either independent steering or induction control, due to the joint dependence of the induction on the thrust coefficient and yaw angle.

Investigation of far-wake models coupled with yaw-induction control for power optimization
Combined wake steering and induction control is a promising strategy for increasing collective wind farm power production over standard turbine control. However, computationally efficient models for predicting optimal control set points still need to be tested against high-fidelity simulations, particularly in regimes of high rotor thrust. In this study, large eddy simulations (LES) are used to investigate a two-turbine array using actuator disk modeling in conventionally neutral atmospheric conditions. The thrust coefficient and yaw-misalignment angle are independently prescribed to the upwind turbine in each simulation while downwind turbine operation is fixed. Analyzing the LES velocity fields shows that near-wake length decreases and wake recovery rate increases with increasing thrust. We model the wake behavior with a physics-based near-wake and induction model coupled with a Gaussian far-wake model. The near-wake model predicts the turbine thrust and power depending on the wake steering and induction control set point. The initial wake velocities predicted by the near-wake model are validated against LES data, and a calibrated far-wake model is used to estimate the power maximizing control set point and power gain. Both model-predicted and LES optimal set points exhibit increases in yaw angle and thrust coefficient for the leading turbine relative to standard control. The model-optimal set point predicts a power gain of 18.1% while the LES optimal set point results in a power gain of 20.7%. In contrast, using a tuned cosine model for the power-yaw relationship results in a set point with a lower magnitude of yaw, a thrust coefficient lower than in standard control, and predicts a power gain of 13.7%. Using the physics-based, model-predicted set points in LES results in a power within 1.5% of optimal, showing potential for joint yaw-induction control as a method for predictably increasing wind farm power output.

Wind turbine control via concurrent yaw misalignment and axial induction control has demonstrated potential for improving wind farm power output and mitigating structural loads. However, the complex aerodynamic interplay between these two effects requires deeper investigation. This study presents a modified blade element momentum (BEM) model that matches rotor-averaged quantities to an actuator disk model of yawed rotor induction, enabling analysis of joint yaw-induction control using realistic turbine control inputs. The BEM approach reveals that common torque control strategies such as K−Ω^2 exhibit sub-optimal performance under yawed conditions. Notably, the power-yaw and thrust-yaw sensitivities vary significantly depending on the chosen control strategy, contrary to common modeling assumptions. In the context of wind farm control, employing induction control which minimizes the thrust coefficient proves most effective at reducing wake strength for a given power output across all yaw angles. Results indicate that while yaw control deflects wakes effectively, induction control more directly influences wake velocity magnitude, underscoring their complementary effects. This study advances a fundamental understanding of turbine aerodynamic responses in yawed operation and sets the stage for modeling joint yaw and induction control in wind farms.more » « less

In tidal streams and rivers, the flow of water can be at yaw to the turbine rotor plane causing performance degradation and a skewed downstream wake. The current study aims to quantify the performance variation and associated wake behavior caused by a tidal turbine operating in a yawed inflow environment. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics study was carried out using multiple reference frame approach using κ-ω SST turbulence model with curvature correction. The computations were validated by comparison with experimental results on a 1:20 scale prototype for a 0° yaw case performed in a laboratory flume. The simulations were performed using a three-bladed, constant chord, untwisted tidal turbine operating at uniform inflow. Yaw effects were observed for angles ranging from 5° to 15°. An increase in yaw over this range caused a power coefficient deficit of 26% and a thrust coefficient deficit of about 8% at a tip speed ratio of 5 that corresponds to the maximum power coefficient for the tested turbine. In addition, wake propagation was studied up to a downstream distance of ten rotor radius, and skewness in the wake, proportional to yaw angle was observed. At higher yaw angles, the flow around the turbine rotor was found to cushion the tip vortices, accelerating the interaction between the tip vortices and the skewed wake, thereby facilitating a faster wake recovery. The center of the wake was tracked using a center of mass technique. The center of wake analysis was used to better quantify the deviation of the wake with increasing yaw angle. It was observed that with an increase in yaw angle, the recovery distance moved closer to the rotor plane. The wake was noticed to meander around the turbine centerline with increasing downstream distance and slightly deviate towards the free surface above the turbine centerline, magnitude of which varied depending on yaw.more » « less

Abstract This paper presents results from wind tunnel experiments to evaluate power gains from wake steering via yaw control. An experimental scaled wind farm with 12 turbines in an aligned rectangular array is used. Wake steering is performed by yawing turbines using a closed-loop algorithm termed the Log-of-Power Proportional Integral Extremum Seeking Control (LP-PIESC). Two configurations are considered. In the first configuration, the turbines in the first two upstream rows are controlled. In the second case, yaw control is applied to the turbines in the first upstream row and the third row. For both cases, uncontrolled turbines have no yaw misalignment. The results show that by independent parallel maximization of the power sum of a reduced number of turbines, it is possible to obtain a close approximation of the true maximum power. The data shows that the LP-PIESC algorithm can converge relatively fast compared to traditional ESC algorithms.more » « less

Engineering wake models provide the invaluable advantage to predict wind turbine wakes, power capture, and, in turn, annual energy production for an entire wind farm with very low computational costs compared to higher-fidelity numerical tools. However, wake and power predictions obtained with engineering wake models can be insufficiently accurate for wind farm optimization problems due to the ad hoc tuning of the model parameters, which are typically strongly dependent on the characteristics of the site and power plant under investigation. In this paper, lidar measurements collected for individual turbine wakes evolving over a flat terrain are leveraged to perform optimal tuning of the parameters of four widely used engineering wake models. The average wake velocity fields, used as a reference for the optimization problem, are obtained through a cluster analysis of lidar measurements performed under a broad range of turbine operative conditions, namely rotor thrust coefficients, and incoming wind characteristics, namely turbulence intensity at hub height. The sensitivity analysis of the optimally tuned model parameters and the respective physical interpretation are presented. The performance of the optimally tuned engineering wake models is discussed, while the results suggest that the optimally tuned Bastankhah and Ainslie wake models provide very good predictions of wind turbine wakes. Specifically, the Bastankhah wake model should be tuned only for the far-wake region, namely where the wake velocity field can be well approximated with a Gaussian profile in the radial direction. In contrast, the Ainslie model provides the advantage of using as input an arbitrary near-wake velocity profile, which can be obtained through other wake models, higher-fidelity tools, or experimental data. The good prediction capabilities of the Ainslie model indicate that the mixing-length model is a simple yet efficient turbulence closure to capture effects of incoming wind and wake-generated turbulence on the wake downstream evolution and predictions of turbine power yield.more » « less
