Title: "¿Qué Funciona?" Translanguaging, Epistemic Agency, and Storytelling for the Authoring of Ideas in Computer Science
Understanding how students compose CSM ideas is essential for engagement, the development of content knowledge, and a robust STEM identity. This case study focuses on the linguistic and pedagogical transformations during computer science and mathematics learning. We document these transformations accompanying idea formation and authorship to identify three essential findings: 1) Translanguaging provides a pedagogical tool for epistemic generativity, 2) Idea-crafting and pedagogical modeling, and 3) The concept of self-pedagogy. Students use translanguaging, exercising epistemic agency to order their learning experience and providing opportunities to reposition themselves and others. In one learning sequence, Joaquin, a student co-facilitator, uses space-time marking to help manage/organize current activity with past experience. These links establish an episodic account of learning that is managed, organized, and referenced as part of a larger narrative. In doing so, he authors a model that provides a substantive connection to content for his peers.  more » « less

  1. Developing a repertoire of notional machines (i.e., pedagogical tools for teaching programming) is essential for new computer science (CS) educators. However, there is a lack of documentation of notional machines and related pedagogical content knowledge (i.e., insights into teaching CS content). Our experience report addresses this lack of documentation and captures insights from our professional learning community. We co-designed an approach to use physical objects to teach inheritance in Java. Unlike a research paper that would rigorously document a few student outcomes with the expectation that these would generalize, our experience report shares our observations from multiple years of teaching with the goal of providing a number of things for educators to consider when teaching inheritance in Java. Drawing from an analysis of our meeting notes, we describe our instructional sequence, our perceptions of its current strengths and weaknesses for supporting students’ learning, insights from our previous failed attempts, and eight pedagogical practices.

Teaching science inquiry practices, especially the more contemporary ones, such as computational thinking practices, requires designing newer learning environments and appropriate pedagogical scaffolds. Using such learning environments, when students construct knowledge about disciplinary ideas using inquiry practices, it is important that they make connections between the two. We call such connections epistemic connections, which are about constructing knowledge using science inquiry practices. In this paper, we discuss the design of a computational thinking integrated biology unit as an Emergent Systems Microworlds (ESM) based curriculum. Using Epistemic Network Analysis, we investigate how the design of unit support students’ learning through making epistemic connections. We also analyze the teacher’s pedagogical moves to scaffold making such connections. This work implies that to support students’ epistemic connections between science inquiry practices and disciplinary ideas, it is critical to design restructured learning environments like ESMs, aligned curricular activities and provide appropriate pedagogical scaffolds.

    This inquiry is guided by a curiosity around the stories that teachers tell about their students, content, and pedagogical approaches focused on data and computational literacies. We present a form of storytelling with theory as we apply theories of syncretism and translanguaging to empirical vignettes about teachers’ sensemaking. We also present a form of storytelling of theory, drawing on teachers’ stories to help us better understand how these theories are related to each other. We bring two teachers’ stories into conversation: one from the Writing Data Stories (WDS) project and the other from the Participating in Literacies and Computer Science (PiLa-CS) project. Both projects utilized translanguaging and syncretism in their conceptions and designs, working with teachers to design for expansive forms of data-based and computational literacies.

  5. Although there have been efforts to broaden the participation of underrepresented students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), few studies have focused on how Latine bilingual students in rural contexts can access computer programming. The purpose of this case study is to examine how translanguaging facilitates understanding among emergent bilingual students. The findings showed how translanguaging is more than translation, how students used their linguistic repertoire to negotiate meaning, and the use of language brokering as a pedagogical tool. Implications for translanguaging in STEM have the potential for a deep understanding of computer programming concepts.
