Noble-transition metal alloys offer emergent optical and electronic properties for near-infrared (NIR) optoelectronic devices. We investigate the optical and electronic properties of Cu x Pd 1−x alloy thin films and their ultrafast electron dynamics under NIR excitation. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements supported by density functional theory calculations show strong d-band hybridization between the Cu 3 d and Pd 4 d bands. These hybridization effects result in emergent optical properties, most apparent in the dilute Pd case. Time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy with NIR (e.g., 1550 nm) excitation displays composition-tunable electron dynamics. We posit that the negative peak in the normalized increment of transmissivity (ΔT/T) below 2 ps from dilute Pd alloys is due to non-thermalized hot-carrier generation. On the other hand, Pd-rich alloys exhibit an increase in ΔT/T due to thermalization effects upon ultrafast NIR photoexcitation. Cu x Pd 1−x alloys in the dilute Pd regime may be a promising material for future ultrafast NIR optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis and Tuning of Electronic, Optical, and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Copper Metavanadate Alloys via Alkaline Earth Metal Substitution
Unlike the well-studied and technologically advanced Group III-V and Group II-VI compound semiconductor alloys, alloys of ternary metal oxide semiconductors have only recently begun to receive widespread attention. Here, we describe the effect of alkaline earth metal substitution on the optical, electronic, and photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of copper metavanadate (CuV2O6). As a host, the Cu-V-O compound family presents a versatile framework to develop such composition-property correlations. Alloy compositions of A0.1Cu0.9V2O6(A = Mg, Ca) photoanodes were synthesized via a time and energy-efficient solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method. The effect of introducing alkaline earth metals (Mg, Ca) on the crystal structure, microstructure, electronic, and optical properties of copper metavanadates was investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The PXRD, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy data demonstrated the polycrystalline powder samples to be mutually soluble, solid solutions of copper and alkaline earth metal metavanadates and not simple mixtures of these compounds. The DRS data showed a systematic decrease in the optical bandgap with Cu incorporation. These trends were corroborated by electronic band structure calculations. Finally, the PEC properties exhibited a strong dependence on the alloy composition, pointing to possible applicability in solar water splitting, heterogeneous photocatalysis, phosphor lighting/displays, and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract Mg4(TiZnSn)3, a rare-earth-free Mg-based multi-principal element alloy, was synthesized via high-energy ball milling and cold compaction. Potentiodynamic polarization in 0.1 M NaCl revealed spontaneous passivation with a corrosion current density of 8.96 ± 0.83 µA/cm2and a nobler than Mg corrosion potential of -1058.35 ± 15.91 mVSCE. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a mixed oxide film containing ZnO, SnO2, and TiO2, contributing to the observed passivity. The alloy also exhibited improved mechanical performance, with a hardness of 5.06 ± 0.41 GPa and Young’s modulus of 109.24 ± 10 GPa. These results demonstrate that tailored multi-element alloying and powder metallurgy can synergistically enhance both corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in Mg alloys.more » « less

null (Ed.)Abstract Lightweight, recyclable, and plentiful Mg alloys are receiving increased attention due to an exceptional combination of strength and ductility not possible from pure Mg. Yet, due to their alloying elements, such as rare-earths or aluminum, they are either not economical or biocompatible. Here we present a new rare-earth and aluminum-free magnesium-based alloy, with trace amounts of Zn, Ca, and Mn (≈ 2% by wt.). We show that the dilute alloy exhibits outstanding high strength and high ductility compared to other dilute Mg alloys. By direct comparison with annealed material of the same chemistry and using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM) and atom probe tomography analyses, we show that the high strength can be attributed to a number of very fine, Zn/Ca-containing nanoscale precipitates, along with ultra-fine grains. These findings show that forming a hierarchy of nanometer precipitates from just miniscule amounts of solute can invoke simultaneous high strength and ductility, producing an affordable, biocompatible Mg alloy.more » « less

Copper oxide nanostructures are widely used for various applications due to their unique optical and electrical properties. In this work, we demonstrate an atmospheric laser-induced oxidation technique for the fabrication of highly electrochemically active copper oxide hierarchical micro/nano structures on copper surfaces to achieve highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensing performance. The effect of laser processing power on the composition, crystallinity, microstructure, wettability, and color of the laser-induced oxide on copper (LIO-Cu) surface was systematically studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), EDX-mapping, water contact angle measurements, and optical microscopy. Results of these investigations showed a remarkable increase in copper oxide composition by increasing the laser processing power. The pore size distribution and surface area of the pristine and LIO-Cu sample estimated by N 2 adsorption–desorption data showed a developed mesoporous LIO-Cu structure. The size of the generated nano-oxides, crystallinity, and electroactivity of the LIO-Cu were observed to be adjustable by the laser processing power. The electrocatalytic activity of LIO-Cu surfaces was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) within a potential window of −0.8 to +0.8 V and chronoamperometry in an applied optimized potential of +0.6 V, in 0.1 M NaOH solution and phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively. LIO-Cu surfaces with optimized laser processing powers exhibited a sensitivity of 6950 μA mM −1 cm −2 within a wide linear range from 0.01 to 5 mM, with exceptional specificity and response time (<3 seconds). The sensors also showed excellent response stability over a course of 50 days that was originated from the binder-free robust electroactive film fabricated directly onto the copper surface. The demonstrated one-step LIO processing onto commercial metal films, can potentially be applied for tuneable and scalable roll-to-roll fabrication of a wide range of high surface area metal oxide micro/nano structures for non-enzymatic biosensing and electrochemical applications.more » « less

null (Ed.)Magnesium–yttrium-rare earth element alloys such as WE43 are potential candidates for future bioabsorbable orthopedic implant materials due to their biocompatibility, mechanical properties similar to human bone, and the ability to completely degrade in vivo . Unfortunately, the high corrosion rate of WE43 Mg alloys in physiological environments and subsequent loss of structural integrity limit the wide applications of these materials. In this study, the effect of chemical heterogeneity and microstructure on the corrosion resistance of two alloys with different metallurgical states was investigated: cast (as in traditional preparation) and as-deposited produced by magnetron sputtering. The corrosion behavior was studied by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in blood bank buffered saline solution. It was found that the as-deposited alloy showed more than one order of magnitude reduction in corrosion current density compared to the cast alloy, owing to the elimination of micro-galvanic coupling between the Mg matrix and the precipitates. The microstructure and formation mechanism of corrosion products formed on both alloys were discussed based on immersion tests and direct measurements of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis.more » « less
