We report on a novel TaNbZrHfTi-based high entropy alloy (HEA) which demonstrates distinctive dual-phase superconductivity. The HEA was synthesized under high pressures and high temperatures starting from a ball milled mixture of elemental metals in a large-volume Paris–Edinburgh cell with P ≈ 6 GPa and T = 2300 K. The synthesized HEA is a phase mixture of BCC (NbTa)0.45(ZrHfTi)0.55 with Tc1 = 6 K and FCC (NbTa)0.04(ZrHfTi)0.96 with Tc2 = 3.75 K. The measured magnetic field parameters for the HEA are lower critical field, Hc1(0) = 31 mT, and a relatively high upper critical field, Hc2(0) = 4.92 T. This dual-phase system is further characterized by the presence of a second magnetization peak, or the fishtail effect, observed in the virgin magnetization curves. This phenomenon, which does not distort the field-dependent magnetization hysteresis loops, suggests intricate pinning mechanisms that could be potentially tuned for optimized performance. The manifestation of these unique features in HEA superconductivity reinforces phase-dependent superconductivity and opens new avenues in the exploration of novel superconducting materials.

We propose a conservative algorithm to test the geometrical validity of simplicial (triangles, tetrahedra), tensor product (quadrilaterals, hexahedra), and mixed (prisms) elements of arbitrary polynomial order as they deform linearly within a time interval. Our algorithm uses a combination of adaptive Bézier refinement and bisection search to determine if, when, and where the Jacobian determinant of an element’s polynomial geometric map becomes negative in the transition from one configuration to another. In elastodynamic simulation, our algorithm guarantees that the system remains physically valid during the entire trajectory, not only at discrete time steps. Unlike previous approaches, physical validity is preserved even when our method is implemented using floating point arithmetic. Hence, our algorithm is only slightly slower than existing non-conservative methods while providing guarantees and while being an easy drop-in replacement for current validity tests. To prove the practical effectiveness of our algorithm, we demonstrate its use in a high-order Incremental Potential Contact (IPC) elastodynamic simulator and experimentally show that it prevents invalid, simulation-breaking configurations that would otherwise occur using non-conservative methods.more » « less

Abstract Gold is an unreactive metal and its chemical interactions with hydrogen have only recently been explored. Here, we report the formation of gold hydride above 40 GPa and 2200 K in X‐ray free electron laser heated diamond anvil cells using various hydrocarbons as hydrogen sources. Above 40 GPa, a hexagonal phase emerges close to the gold melting point, corresponding to a hydride with stoichiometry , with increasing from 0 to near 1 with pressure from 40 to 80 GPa. This is a high‐temperature phase which reverts to face centered cubic gold on cooling to 295 K. Accompanying DFT‐MD simulations are in excellent agreement with experiment and reveal the structure to consist of an hexagonal close packed gold lattice with atomic hydrogen disordered in the interstices. The hydrogen is superionic and exhibits high diffusivity through the crystalline gold lattice. Our results present the first solid‐state binary compound of gold and hydrogen.more » « less

Abstract During high-speed behaviour, animals must synchronise perception and action despite rapid environmental and self-generated motion. How neural systems achieve such precision remains unclear. Here we show how the housefly (Musca domestica) maintains visual accuracy during fast motion. Using intracellular and photomechanical recordings during saccade-like stimulation, we traced information flow from photoreceptors to large monopolar cells (LMCs). Visual neurons achieved record-high information sampling (~2500 bits·s-1) and synaptic transmission (~4100 bits·s-1), far exceeding previous estimates. We identify a previously unknown mechanism -synaptic high-frequency jumping- in which photoreceptor-LMC synapses dynamically shift transmission toward higher frequencies during saccades, extending visual bandwidth to ~1000 Hz, effectively eliminating synaptic delays, and quadrupling classical flicker-fusion limits (~230 Hz). Behavioural experiments show flies respond synchronously within ~13-20 ms, even before photoreceptor responses peak. A biophysically realistic model reveals how photomechanical-stochastic-refractory quantal sampling and synaptic transmission co-adapt with saccadic behaviour: through self-motion, flies efficiently translate image motion into temporally-precise, predictive high-speed vision.more » « less
