Abstract The fossil record of treeshrews, hedgehogs, and other micromammals from the Lower Siwaliks of India is sparse. Here, we report on a new genus and species of fossil treeshrew, specimens of the hedgehog Galerix , and other micromammals from the middle Miocene (Lower Siwalik) deposits surrounding Ramnagar (Udhampur District, Jammu and Kashmir), at a fossil locality known as Dehari. The treeshrew from Dehari ( Sivatupaia ramnagarensis n. gen. n. sp.) currently represents the oldest record of fossil tupaiids in the Siwaliks, extending their time range by ca. 2.5–4.0 Myr in the region. Dietary analyses suggest that the new tupaiid was likely adapted for a less mechanically challenging or more frugivorous diet compared to other extant and fossil tupaiids. The occurrence of Galerix has only been recently documented from the Indian Siwaliks and the Dehari specimens help establish the likely presence of a relatively large Siwalik Galerix species in the Ramnagar region. In addition to the new treeshrew and hedgehogs, new specimens of the rodents Kanisamys indicus , Sayimys sivalensis , and Murinae indet. from Dehari help confirm that age estimates for the Ramnagar region are equivalent to the Chinji Formation in Pakistan, most likely corresponding to the middle to upper part of the Chinji Formation. First report of rodents from the Miocene Siwalik locality of Dunera, Pathankot District, Punjab, India
Although there have been a few reports of macromammals from the Siwalik site of Dunera, no micromammals have yet been described. Recently, a diverse micromammal fossil assemblage represented by isolated teeth has been recovered from Dunera. The specimens are identified as a murine similar to Progonomys hussaini (Progonomys cf. hussaini), the ctenodactylid Sayimys sivalensis, the cricetid Democricetodon fejfari, and a sciurid, cf. Tamias urialis. These rodents are documented for the first time from this region of the Indian Siwaliks. Based on the biostratigraphic ranges of these rodents from well-dated localities in the Siwaliks of Pakistan along with previously collected magnetostratigraphic data, Dunera locality best correlates to between ~11-10 Ma (early Late Miocene), approximately equivalent to the lower half of the Nagri Formation. Previous magneto-stratigraphic data suggests that an age closer to ~11 Ma is more likely, perhaps sampling a temporal gap in the known Siwaliks micromammal record and extending the age ranges of P. hussaini and T. urialis by a few hundred thousand years.

The Cenozoic tectonic history of Marie Byrd Land (MBL), West Antarctica, is dominated by uplift of the MBL dome, a ~800 by ~300 km topographic swell thought to be supported by a hot mantle anomaly, and normal faulting accompanying extension of the West Antarctic rift system (WARS). Additionally, glaciation beginning at 34 – 20 Ma resulted in deeply incised glacial troughs with up to 5km of relief. This study investigates the timing, magnitude, and spatial relationships of these tectonic and erosional events by determining a regional exhumation history of western MBL through thermo-kinematic modeling of low-temperature thermochronologic data. New apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) analyses include ages between 46 – 63 Ma, significantly younger than previously determined ages between 80 – 100 Ma. 3D thermo-kinematic modeling reveals focused glacial incision alone is incapable of producing this young population of AHe ages, indicating additional exhumation processes have been at work since ~80 Ma. Differential exhumation across western MBL is required to produce the range of observed AHe ages, with laterally variable exhumation ranging from little to none on the Edward VII Peninsula to ~0.04 km/myr in the eastern Ford Ranges. This spatial pattern is consistent with enhanced exhumation related to uplift of the MBL dome in the eastern Ford Ranges, with this effect diminishing westward to the Edward VII Peninsula. A sharp change in exhumation rate in the western Ford Ranges suggests recent motion on inferred normal faults consistent with WARS extension and down-dropping of the Edward VII Peninsula. Models based on available bedrock data provide little insight into the timing and magnitude of glacial incision due to the present inability to directly sample bedrock in deep glacial troughs. However, model predictions of bedrock low-temperature age distributions within glacial troughs are useful as a point of comparison for detrital age distributions. New detrital AHe ages from Sulzberger Bay, offshore western MBL, range from 49 – >100 Ma and are consistent with model age distributions. These model results support a complex, spatially heterogeneous exhumation history for western MBL tied to its position between the MBL dome and the WARS and provide insight into the impact of glacial incision across the regional landscape.more » « less

null (Ed.)The fossil record of ‘lesser apes’ (i.e. hylobatids = gibbons and siamangs) is virtually non-existent before the latest Miocene of East Asia. However, molecular data strongly and consistently suggest that hylobatids should be present by approximately 20 Ma; thus, there are large temporal, geographical, and morphological gaps between early fossil apes in Africa and the earliest fossil hylobatids in China. Here, we describe a new approximately 12.5–13.8 Ma fossil ape from the Lower Siwaliks of Ramnagar, India, that fills in these long-standing gaps with implications for hylobatid origins. This ape represents the first new hominoid species discovered at Ramnagar in nearly a century, the first new Siwalik ape taxon in more than 30 years, and likely extends the hylobatid fossil record by approximately 5 Myr, providing a minimum age for hylobatid dispersal coeval to that of great apes. The presence of crown hylobatid molar features in the new species indicates an adaptive shift to a more frugivorous diet during the Middle Miocene, consistent with other proposed adaptations to frugivory (e.g. uricase gene silencing) during this time period as well.more » « less

A new latest Paleocene mammal fauna from the Great Divide Basin in southern Wyoming is described and compared with fossil assemblages of similar age elsewhere in Wyoming. The Twelvemile Gulch local fauna is currently documented by 182 mammalian (127 identifiable) specimens from two localities representing 10 orders, 18 families, and 22 species of mammals, including Phenacolemur cavatus, new species. Several characteristic taxa indicate a Clarkforkian age, but some taxa that co-occur at Twelvemile Gulch show disjunct stratigraphic ranges in the well-documented stratigraphic sequence exposed in the Clarks Fork Basin of northern Wyoming. Anachronistic occurrences of Clarkforkian taxa in northern and southern Wyoming have now been documented repeatedly. These unexpected faunal associations likely reflect changing climates and associated taxon-specific range shifts across a latitudinal gradient in the Rocky Mountain Interior. The apparently asynchronous first and last appearances of certain taxa across this latitudinal gradient highlight the utility of immigrant clades over endemic taxa in biostratigraphy. A previous biozonation scheme for the Clarkforkian of the Clarks Fork Basin emphasized endemic Plesiadapis cookei and Copecion as index taxa for Clarkforkian biozones Cf-2 and Cf-3, respectively. However, the applicability of this zonation to Clarkforkian faunas from other parts of Wyoming has been problematic because Plesiadapis cookei occurs in all of them, despite substantial evidence for age disparity among these faunas. A revised biozonation for the Clarkforkian leverages first appearances of invasive Coryphodontidae and Miacidae to discriminate later Clarkforkian faunas including Twelvemile Gulch from earlier Clarkforkian faunas such as Big Multi Quarry.more » « less
