Title: Digging deep in the sociality of interaction: lessons from knowledge-making in potato science
In her recent "What's Social About Social Epistemology?" (Longino 2022, JFP 109(4)) Helen Longino turns her attention to a particular aspect of the sociality of science, which she terms “the sociality of interaction.” (171) In her account, social interaction among scientific groups is essential to the production of scientific knowledge. She discusses many activities that exemplify the sociality of interaction in the sciences — from the uses of testimony and shared categories for representing phenomena to collecting, sharing, and disagreeing about data — and argues that these activities produce scientific knowledge through social interaction. We are broadly sympathetic to this view. However, in her analysis, Longino argues that “concern with practices that are productive of knowledge, rather than with the content and subject of knowledge” should be the focus. (173, emphasis added) This suggests that it is both possible and desirable to analyze practices without analyzing the content and subject of knowledge, and further that analysis of content-knowledge in a given scientific domain should not be the focus of attention if the goal of a philosophical investigation is understanding scientific knowledge production. We disagree. Consider the agricultural-scientific practice of extension, a type of knowledge-producing work in agricultural science. Extension is a legally and institutionally defined social system that produces interactions between scientists and the public in contemporary U.S. agricultural science. The success conditions of producing extension knowledge are inherently, deeply, and interactively social. In this talk, we show that the sociality of successful knowledge production in extension is inextricable from the “content and subject” of new scientific knowledge produced through extension. We illustrate our point through a discussion of agricultural-scientific research on potatoes. Such research is often carried out via extension. We argue that what potatoes are is intertwined with human interaction. The significance of potatoes as a food crop impacts how research on potatoes occurs, from what questions are asked to what scientific practices are able to be carried out to answer those questions. Most field trials on potatoes occur on privately-held farms that partner with researchers, and commercial farm workers rather than principal investigators grow the crops that produce the objects of study. Extension often mediates these partnerships, and from historical and present-day farmers and extension workers to commercial and academic agricultural scientists, networks of interactively social partnerships remain intertwined with the production of potatoes — and knowledge about them. We show how extension generates content-knowledge that is inseparable from the practices productive of that knowledge. Our analysis is ultimately a friendly amendment to Longino’s view. We take seriously the centrality of the sociality of interaction in producing scientific knowledge. We contend that knowledge co-production practices in agricultural science illustrate (1) how knowledge about agricultural experiment is made through social interaction and (2) why such interaction is essential for epistemic content. What we propose is an admittedly strong form of sociality in which sociality is constitutive of knowledge in a way that without it, that which is being discussed ceases to be knowledge if it is not social.  more » « less

    One way to support teachers' learning to facilitate the recent reform vision (NRC, 2012) in their classrooms is through professional development (PD). We explored a biology teacher’s (Monica) sensemaking during the PD that focused on facilitating productive science classroom discourse to understand her responses to the PD in terms of teaching science by engaging students in productive talk in science classrooms. Using both video and interview data, we analyzed the process of her sensemaking about facilitating (productive) talk during the PD and the meaning she was making of productive talk. Our analysis indicated that Monica participated in sensemaking mostly about her students' participation in talk. Throughout the PD conversations, she rarely focused on what she could do (or could have done) to facilitate student talk without the PD facilitators' pressing. This is supported by our analysis of the interviews with Monica, which showed that the sense that she was making about productive talk mostly focuses on students' contributions to the talk and their accountability to reasoning, scientific knowledge, and sensemaking. These findings provide implications for facilitating teachers’ sensemaking around new instructional practices and reforms within PD contexts.

    This study examined one teacher’s perspectives of effective professional development (PD) four years after attending PD workshops to better understand her uptake and what content, instructional practices, and resources she continues to use, why and how she interprets and implements these practices in her classroom today. We also examined her perspective on the design features of PD that she attributes to her learning. We used a survey and collected video data from the teacher’s classroom, and we also conducted think aloud interviews to better understand her teaching and learning overtime and her perception of her own learning and how it is currently evidenced in her classroom today. Through triangulation of data and analyses, we identified six assertions that capture her perspectives on effective features of PD design as well as providing evidence of her sustained learning four years post PD.

  3. The need to diversify the engineering workforce is a national imperative, emphasizing broadening participation and fostering inclusivity. Achieving this goal necessitates comprehensively examining the educational pathways that nurture and launch talented individuals into engineering careers. The 2020 National Science Board, “Science and Engineering Labor Force,” Science & Engineering Indicators reveals a persistent underrepresentation of Black students in engineering disciplines. Within this group, there is further heterogeneity, with Black students of international origin often being overlooked. This study narrows its focus on these international Black students to understand their unique experiences better. The systemic and cultural racial biases inherent within educational institutions contribute to the marked dearth of Black students in engineering doctoral programs. Even as research begins to unravel the experiences of Black Ph.D. students in engineering – from motivations and persistence to encounters with racial microaggressions – the disparity remains, underscoring the need for deeper exploration. Utilizing autoethnography, this study illuminates the journey of a Black female engineer from Nigeria during her inaugural semester in a U.S.-based civil engineering Ph.D. program. The research hinges on two pivotal questions: what early challenges did she confront, and how did she traverse them? To answer these questions, reflective journals and audio diaries maintained consistently by the researcher were employed. These data sources were subjected to inductive coding via Dedoose to tease out dominant themes. This research findings highlight critical challenges this international student faces, from grappling with communication barriers and acclimatizing to the U.S. academic landscape to technological adjustments and fostering trust in her academic environment. Intriguingly, the student drew upon her deep understanding of social connections, commonly called 'Ima Nmadu' in Nigeria, which translates to "It's not what you know, it's who you know." Coupled with keen self-reflection and unwavering dedication, these networks became pivotal in surmounting the identified challenges. The intertwined roles of social and navigational capital become evident, proving indispensable in shepherding students through the tumultuous initial phases of graduate school. By unveiling and addressing Black international Ph.D. students’ distinct challenges, this study amplifies the clarion call for fostering participation and inclusivity in engineering doctoral programs.

    A key form of scientific literacy is being able to leverage the knowledge, practices, and commitments of ethical science to everyday civic matters of social consequence. Learning how to engage in civic life in equity-focused ways needs to be intertwined with learning disciplinary—or transdisciplinary—knowledge and practices. In this article we discuss how an art-science learning program at Science Gallery Dublin in Ireland supported subsequent civic participation by adolescent youth. Using longitudinal case studies of young people, we document how they became agents of change in their homes, schools, and wider communities over several years after participating in the program. This work provides insight into how specific design features of informal learning environments help launch or expand the science-linked identities of youth interested in participation in civic life and social action. These cases also illustrate how to develop educational models that support young people to take informed action toward matters of community and environmental consequence, a key aspect of building a more sustainable and thriving future.

  5. Science teacher knowledge for effective teaching consists of multiple knowledge bases, one of which includes science content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. With the inclusion of science and engineering practices into the national science education standards in the US, teachers’ content knowledge goes beyond subject matter knowledge and into the realm of how scientists use practices for scientific inquiry. This study compares two approaches to constructing and validating two different versions of a survey that aims to measure the construct of teachers’ knowledge of models and modeling in science teaching. In the first version, a 24-item Likert scale survey containing content and pedagogical knowledge items was found to lack the ability to distinguish different knowledge levels for respondents, and validation through factor analysis indicated content and pedagogical knowledge items could not be separated. Findings from the validation results of the first survey influenced revisions to the second version of the survey, a 25-item multiple-choice instrument. The second survey employed a competence model framework for models and modeling for item specifications, and results from exploratory factor analysis revealed this approach to assessing the construct to be more appropriate. Recommendations for teacher assessment of science practices using competence models and points to consider in survey design, including norm-referenced or criterion-referenced tests, are discussed.
