We introduce the concept of a meta design study as a structured approach to extract information from design study papers for the development of generalized tools in specific problem areas or domains. We explore the potential of meta design studies for creating domain-oriented visualization recommendation (VisRec) strategies. To demonstrate this concept, we present RSVP, a system derived from a meta design study conducted on Visual Parameter Space Analysis (VPSA). We outline the individual steps of the meta design study, highlight key concepts of the resulting VisRec strategy, and present a non-obtrusive implementation of this approach in RSVP.

                            On the Cultivation of Designers’ Emotional Connoisseurship (Part 1): A Theoretical Positioning
                        
                    
    
            This two-part article explores the concept of emotional connoisseurship— the art of appreciating lived emotional experiences in emotion-driven design (EDD). In Part 1, we aim to establish and position the concept within the current EDD theoretical landscape. We first review the concept of connoisseurship, its origins, development, and relevance to professional practices. Second, building upon the existing design literature, we scrutinize the relationships between design connoisseurship and design expertise. We then conceptualize emotional connoisseurship as an essential skill that designers aspiring to practice EDD must actively cultivate, along with learning EDD theories, methods, and tools. After that, we reflect on how previous EDD research outcomes (i.e., emotional granularity design tools) can support the development of a designer’s emotional connoisseurship, especially in a schema-oriented or top-down manner, and argue the need for a sensibil- ity-oriented or bottom-up approach. Part 1 sets the stage for Part 2. Part 2 will detail our pedagogical initiative supporting the self-cultivation of emotional connoisseurship among novice designers through a sensibility- oriented approach.

            Abstract Prototyping use cases for augmented reality (AR) applications can be beneficial to elicit the functional requirements of the features early-on, to drive the subsequent development in a goal-oriented manner. Doing so would require designers to identify the goal-oriented interactions and map the associations between those interactions in a spatio-temporal context. Pertaining to the multiple scenarios that may result from the mapping, and the embodied nature of the interaction components, recent AR prototyping methods lack the support to adequately capture and communicate the intent of designers and stakeholders during this process. We present ImpersonatAR, a mobile-device-based prototyping tool that utilizes embodied demonstrations in the augmented environment to support prototyping and evaluation of multi-scenario AR use cases. The approach uses: (1) capturing events or steps in the form of embodied demonstrations using avatars and 3D animations, (2) organizing events and steps to compose multi-scenario experience, and finally (3) allowing stakeholders to explore the scenarios through interactive role-play with the prototypes. We conducted a user study with ten participants to prototype use cases using ImpersonatAR from two different AR application features. Results validated that ImpersonatAR promotes exploration and evaluation of diverse design possibilities of multi-scenario AR use cases through embodied representations of the different scenarios.more » « less

            Creating thematic collections in industries demands innovative designs and cohesive concepts. Designers may face challenges in maintaining thematic consistency when drawing inspiration from existing objects, landscapes, or artifacts. While AI-powered graphic design tools offer help, they often fail to generate cohesive sets based on specific thematic concepts. In response, we introduce iCONTRA, an interactive CONcept TRAnsfer system. With a user-friendly interface, iCONTRA enables both experienced designers and novices to effortlessly explore creative design concepts and efficiently generate thematic collections. We also propose a zero-shot image editing algorithm, eliminating the need for fine-tuning models, which gradually integrates information from initial objects, ensuring consistency in the generation process without influencing the background. A pilot study suggests iCONTRA’s potential to reduce designers’ efforts. Experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness in producing consistent and high-quality object concept transfers. iCONTRA stands as a promising tool for innovation and creative exploration in thematic collection design.more » « less

            Shifts in policy and consumers’ awareness have raised the importance of sustainability in product design, inspiring the development of tools that support more sustainable design. However, such tools are not adopted as quickly as expected. To understand what tools designers consider useful, we explored how much control designers perceive over existing design strategies, and how much impact they think these strategies have. We used a survey (n = 42) and follow-up interviews (n = 12) to ask hardware product design professionals what areas they see opportunities in, and what functions they look for in tools. The findings reveal that designers perceive impact and control differently in different opportunity areas, so to increase the likelihood of adoption, tools should incorporate features that reflect those differences. Designers report the least control over aspects related to manufacturing, and also rate these as having low impact on sustainability. In contrast, designers attribute high control and impact to aspects related to their design practice and their organizations’ business model, which are tightly linked. To address these issues, designers pointed towards tools that improve information transparency, support decision-making, predict results, share knowledge, and discover user needs. Regardless of how much control designers have, they care about tools and strategies that are highly impactful.more » « less

            null (Ed.)Engineering designers currently use downstream information about product and component functions to facilitate ideation and concept generation of analogous products. These processes, often called Function-Based Design, can be reliant on designer definitions of product function, which are inconsistent from designer to designer. In this paper, we employ supervised learning algorithms to reduce the variety of component functions that are available to designers in a design repository, thus enabling designers to focus their function-based design efforts on more accurate, reduced sets of potential functions. To do this, we generate decisions trees and rules that define the functions of components based on the identity of neighboring components. The resultant decision trees and rulesets reduce the number of feasible functions for components within a product, which is of particular interest for use by novice designers, as reducing the feasible functional space can help focus the design activities of the designer. This reduction was evident in both case studies: one exploring a component that is known to the designer, and the other looking at defining function of an unrecognizable component. The work presented here contributes to the recent popularity of using product data in data-driven design methodologies, especially those focused on supplementing designer cognition. Importantly, we found that this methodology is reliant on repository data quality, and the results indicate a need to continue the development of design repository data schemas with improved data consistency and fidelity. This research is a necessary precursor for the development of function-based design tools, including automated functional modeling.more » « less
