Abstract Several recent papers have examined a rational polyhedronPmwhose integer points are in bijection with the numerical semigroups (cofinite, additively closed subsets of the non-negative integers) containingm. A combinatorial description of the faces ofPmwas recently introduced, one that can be obtained from the divisibility posets of the numerical semigroups a given face contains. In this paper, we study the faces ofPmcontaining arithmetical numerical semigroups and those containing certain glued numerical semigroups, as an initial step towards better understanding the full face structure ofPm. In most cases, such faces only contain semigroups from these families, yielding a tight connection to the geometry ofPm.

Numerical Semigroups, Polyhedra, and Posets III: Minimal Presentations and Face Dimension
This paper is the third in a series of manuscripts that examine the combinatorics of the Kunz polyhedron $$P_m$$, whose positive integer points are in bijection with numerical semigroups (cofinite subsemigroups of $$\mathbb Z_{\ge 0}$$) whose smallest positive element is $$m$$. The faces of $$P_m$$ are indexed by a family of finite posets (called Kunz posets) obtained from the divisibility posets of the numerical semigroups lying on a given face. In this paper, we characterize to what extent the minimal presentation of a numerical semigroup can be recovered from its Kunz poset. In doing so, we prove that all numerical semigroups lying on the interior of a given face of $$P_m$$ have identical minimal presentation cardinality, and we provide a combinatorial method of obtaining the dimension of a face from its corresponding Kunz poset.

Abstract We continue our study of exponent semigroups of rational matrices. Our main result is that the matricial dimension of a numerical semigroup is at most its multiplicity (the least generator), greatly improving upon the previous upper bound (the conductor). For many numerical semigroups, including all symmetric numerical semigroups, our upper bound is tight. Our construction uses combinatorially structured matrices and is parametrised by Kunz coordinates, which are central to enumerative problems in the study of numerical semigroups.more » « less

null (Ed.)We prove a conjecture of Thomas Lam that the face posets of stratified spaces of planar resistor networks are shellable. These posets are called uncrossing partial orders. This shellability result combines with Lam's previous result that these same posets are Eulerian to imply that they are CW posets, namely that they are face posets of regular CW complexes. Certain subposets of uncrossing partial orders are shown to be isomorphic to type A Bruhat order intervals; our shelling is shown to coincide on these intervals with a Bruhat order shelling which was constructed by Matthew Dyer using a reflection order. Our shelling for uncrossing posets also yields an explicit shelling for each interval in the face posets of the edge product spaces of phylogenetic trees, namely in the Tuffley posets, by virtue of each interval in a Tuffley poset being isomorphic to an interval in an uncrossing poset. This yields a more explicit proof of the result of Gill, Linusson, Moulton and Steel that the CW decomposition of Moulton and Steel for the edge product space of phylogenetic trees is a regular CW decomposition.more » « less

Abstract For a Weyl group W of rank r , the W -Catalan number is the number of antichains of the poset of positive roots, and the W -Narayana numbers refine the W -Catalan number by keeping track of the cardinalities of these antichains. The W -Narayana numbers are symmetric – that is, the number of antichains of cardinality k is the same as the number of cardinality $r-k$ . However, this symmetry is far from obvious. Panyushev posed the problem of defining an involution on root poset antichains that exhibits the symmetry of the W -Narayana numbers. Rowmotion and rowvacuation are two related operators, defined as compositions of toggles, that give a dihedral action on the set of antichains of any ranked poset. Rowmotion acting on root posets has been the subject of a significant amount of research in the recent past. We prove that for the root posets of classical types, rowvacuation is Panyushev’s desired involution.more » « less

The Wiener index of a finite graph $$G$$ is the sum over all pairs $(p,q)$ of vertices of $$G$$ of the distance between $$p$$ and $$q$$. When $$P$$ is a finite poset, we define its Wiener index as the Wiener index of the graph of its Hasse diagram. In this paper, we find exact expressions for the Wiener indices of the distributive lattices of order ideals in minuscule posets. For infinite families of such posets, we also provide results on the asymptotic distribution of the distance between two random order ideals.more » « less
