Title: Illustrating a method for analyzing multimodal artifacts used in transactions of practice.
We illustrate how concepts from systemic functional linguistics are adapted for the analysis of multimodal representations of practice used in activities where teachers and teacher educators transact meanings about practice. We focus on the transactive register used to project practice meanings to the audience of these representations. We showcase the systems called visibility (how much of the classroom experience happening is made visible to the viewer), temporality (how sequence and duration of events are represented), and theme (how semiotic resources maintain and develop themes). We apply these systems to examine the differences between two storyboards of algebra lessons that were used in a professional development context and the different kinds of reactions teachers offered to the different storyboards.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Technology-mediated simulations of teaching are used increasingly to represent practice in the context of professional development interventions and assessment. Some such simulations represent students as cartoon characters. An important question in this context is whether simplified cartoon representations of students can convey similar meanings as real facial expressions do. Here, we share results from an implementation and replication study designed to observe whether and how (1) cartoon-based representations of emotion using graphical facial expressions can be interpreted at similar levels of accuracy as photo representations of emotions using actors and (2) the inclusion of markers of student emotions in storyboard-based scenarios of secondary mathematics teaching affects teachers’ appropriateness rating of the actions taken by a teacher represented in the storyboard. We show graphical representations of emotions can evoke particular intended emotions and that markers of student emotions in representations of practice could cue mathematics teachers into particular judgments of action.     To examine differences in dimensions of :MKT observable in different creation mediums for teacher-created representations of practice, we analyzed 54 representations of practice (pairs of 27 video and 27 written) created by 27 PSMTs. We found 7 pairs where we observed higher MKT in the video than in the written representation of practice created by the same PSMT. We found 0 cases where we obse1ved higher MKT in the written as compared to the video representation of practice. We examined these 7 pairs for qualities characterizing the pairs as a set. We use findings to problematize issues central to mathematics teacher education: how mathematics is conceptualized, and how representations of practice are used as assessment of dimensions of teachers' MKT.

  4. We introduce biology to the artist’s design tool, the storyboard. This versatile organizing and visualizing artistic platform is introduced into the biology classroom to aid in an inventive and focused discovery process. Almost all biological concepts are dynamic, and storyboards offer biology, lecture, wet and computational labs, flexibility, inventiveness, and an opportunity for students to slow down the so-called steps of biological processes and moderate their observations. Storyboarding is a thoughtful and reflective discovery device with enormous potential to break with traditional biology classroom experiences and return to the root of the educational process: storytelling. It will encourage teachers to embark on the remodeling of the biological curriculum with specific technical skills that students and teachers should consider developing to make the STEAM experience tailored to the uniqueness of biological systems. Storyboards offer hands-on, illustrative, and interactive conversations about biology concepts. They are an “unplugged” and contemplative experiences, organizing frameworks for personal expression focused on biological wonders.

  5. Abstract Natural languages like English connect pronunciations with meanings. Linguistic pronunciations can be described in ways that relate them to our motor system (e.g., to the movement of our lips and tongue). But how do linguistic meanings relate to our nonlinguistic cognitive systems? As a case study, we defend an explicit proposal about the meaning ofmostby comparing it to the closely relatedmore: whereasmoreexpresses a comparison between two independent subsets,mostexpresses a subset–superset comparison. Six experiments with adults and children demonstrate that these subtle differences between their meanings influence how participants organize and interrogate their visual world. In otherwise identical situations, changing the word frommosttomoreaffects preferences for picture–sentence matching (experiments 1–2), scene creation (experiments 3–4), memory for visual features (experiment 5), and accuracy on speeded truth judgments (experiment 6). These effects support the idea that the meanings ofmoreandmostare mental representations that provide detailed instructions to conceptual systems.
