Title: Impact of a Networked Improvement Community’s Interventions on STEM Student Persistence. Review of Results and a Call to Action.
It is well known that high impact practices such as student learning communities and peer-mentoring, early engagement in research and faculty-student relationship building can have a positive influence on undergraduate student engagement and retention in their chosen field of study. The First2 Network is a Networked Improvement Community comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators from eight higher education institutions in West Virginia and one in Kentucky, that has, over the past six years, engaged in creating interventions to implement and test these high impact practices with the aim of doubling the graduation rate of first-generation and other underrepresented STEM students. Relying on data collected, mostly from WVU, we see very promising outcomes on the persistence of STEM majors. These results will be shared. However, our data story is incomplete as there is no mechanism to sort data on first-generation status across all universities and colleges in the state. The value of this information and its inclusion in a future state funding formula will be explored.  more » « less

The First2 Network is a coalition of individuals from multiple universities, K-12 schools, industry, and government organizations from a rural eastern U.S. state who collaborate to ensure that rural, first-generation undergraduate students are prepared and motivated to persist in their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) major. Since its inception in 2018, this National Science Foundation-funded project has utilized student summer immersive experiences for incoming freshmen and Networked Improvement Communities to produce replicable best practices, campus student clubs, student ambassador programs, institutional teams, statewide conferences, and many other methods, all for the purpose of promoting student STEM persistence across the state. This study employs social network analysis to explore the structure, growth, and impact of the connections across this Network over the five years of its existence. Social network analysis metrics indicate that the Network grew both in size and connectivity until 2022 when policy changes led to more institutional localization for the purpose of sustainability. Students have formed robust connections with other Network members throughout the course of the project, leading to a higher STEM persistence rate among students in the Network than average at their university. Faculty from different universities across the state have made connections, which has increased productivity as a result of network membership. The available data suggests that the Network has had a positive impact on both student retention and faculty collaboration, which should be sustained and have a positive impact on STEM persistence throughout the state in years to come

    Student research in STEM education is an important learning component for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is not sufficient for students to learn passively in lecture-based classrooms without engaging and immersing themselves in the educational process through real-world research learning. Experiential learning for STEM students can involve conducting research, alongside and through the guidance of their professors, early in a student’s undergraduate or graduate program. The authors consider such experiences to be the hallmark of a high-quality STEM education and something every student, undergraduate and graduate, should have during the course of their programs. The purpose of this case study is to document the faculty authors’ experiences in student-faculty research and provide guidance and recommendations for best practices based upon the authors’ experience, data, and literature findings. Moreover, the study presents the experience of the faculty authors’ international student researchers in STEM with focus on two student researchers, one undergraduate and one graduate, who are international STEM. The students served as co-authors on this project. Findings from this case study indicate that students were highly engaged in the research process and found these skills valuable preparation for further study and career. Moreover, the students expressed enthusiasm and engagement for the research process.

  5. Student engagement, especially among Engineering and Computer science majors (E/CS), has been a priority for researchers. Although considerable efforts have been made to improve college students' engagement and interest, underrepresented minority groups and first-generation students are still at risk of dropping out of engineering majors due to lack of inclusiveness, motivation, and other related factors. According to Kuh (2008), student participation in High-Impact Educational Practices (HIEP) is correlated with student outcomes such as persistence, performance, achievement, and intent to complete their current major. The present study reviews the existing National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, 2012, 2017) data from two western land-grant universities to fully capture participation through the survey of first-year students and seniors (N = 674). The HIEP considered include service-learning, learning communities, research with faculty, internship or field experience, study abroad, and culminating senior experience. These practices are designed to encourage meaningful interactions between faculty and students, foster collaboration with students within different demographics groups, and facilitate learning outside the classroom. Insights were gleaned from how the students interacted with HIEP based on special characteristics such as sex, race, age, enrollment status, and residence. The purpose of the present study is to examine the extent to which E/CS students participate in HIEP and its effects on student outcomes. This study also offers comparisons or possible relationships between student demographics, student success, and HIEP involvement. For example, the participation rates of HIEP on different engineering and computer science majors, including civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and materials engineering, etc., are analyzed to examine the practices that work for a particular E/CS major. The present study reports findings from NSSE 2012 and 2017 surveys. Results show that among the E/CS seniors, service-learning, learning community, and study abroad program are the HIEP with the lowest participation rate with 41% (service-learning), 59% (learning community), and 68% (study abroad program), indicating that they do not plan to engage in these practices in their senior year. Conversely, internships and culminating senior experiences had the most participation among E/CS seniors with 52% (internships) and 68% (culminating senior experiences. Interestingly, first-year students showed a significant interest to participate in the following HIEP: internships, study abroad programs, and culminating senior experiences – with 76% (internships), 47% (study abroad program), and 68% (culminating senior experiences) indicating plans to engage in these practices. Finally, findings show that participation or engagement in HIEP is a significant predictor of student learning outcomes. Findings of this review may serve as a guide for future research in E/CS student participation in HIEP. The paper concludes with theoretical and practical implications of the findings on student engagement and learning. Key words: NSSE, high impact educational practices, Engagement
