Abstract The conventional accretion disk lore is that magnetized turbulence is the principal angular momentum transport process that drives accretion. However, when dynamically important large-scale magnetic fields thread an accretion disk, they can produce mass and angular momentum outflows, known as winds, that also drive accretion. Yet, the relative importance of turbulent and wind-driven angular momentum transport is still poorly understood. To probe this question, we analyze a long-duration (1.2 × 105rg/c) simulation of a rapidly rotating (a= 0.9) black hole feeding from a thick (H/r∼ 0.3), adiabatic, magnetically arrested disk (MAD), whose dynamically important magnetic field regulates mass inflow and drives both uncollimated and collimated outflows (i.e., winds and jets, respectively). By carefully disentangling the various angular momentum transport processes within the system, we demonstrate the novel result that disk winds and disk turbulence both extract roughly equal amounts of angular momentum from the disk. We find cumulative angular momentum and mass accretion outflow rates of and , respectively. This result suggests that understanding both turbulent and laminar stresses is key to understanding the evolution of systems where geometrically thick MADs can occur, such as the hard state of X-ray binaries, low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, some tidal disruption events, and possibly gamma-ray bursts.

The high energy X-ray probe (HEX-P): sensitive broadband X-ray observations of transient phenomena in the 2030s
HEX-Pis a probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging ( FWHM) and broad spectral coverage (0.2–80 keV) with an effective area superior toNuSTARabove 10 keV to enable revolutionary new insights into a variety of astrophysical problems, especially those related to compact objects, accretion and outflows.HEX-Pwill launch at a time when the sky is being routinely scanned for transient gravitational wave, electromagnetic and neutrino phenomena that will require the capabilities of a sensitive, broadband X-ray telescope for follow up studies. These include the merger of compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes, stellar explosions, and the birth of new compact objects. A response time to target of opportunity observation requests of hours and a field of regard of 3πsteradians will allowHEX-Pto probe the accretion and ejecta from these transient phenomena through the study of relativistic outflows and reprocessed emission, provide unique capabilities for understanding jet physics, and potentially revealing the nature of the central engine.

LetNandpbe prime numbers with such that . In a previous paper, we showed that there is a cuspformfof weight 2 and level whoseℓ-th Fourier coefficient is congruent to modulo a prime abovepfor all primesℓ. In this paper, we prove that this formfis unique up to Galois conjugacy, and the extension of generated by the coefficients offis exactly . We also prove similar results when a higher power ofpdivides .more » « less

Abstract Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic-ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the Swift-BAT Spectroscopic Survey catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 yr of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, the Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux = TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV, with a power-law spectral indexγ= 3.10 , consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a posttrial significance of 2.9σ. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux = TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV andγ= 2.83 .more » « less

Abstract We study the ray transformLover null (light) rays in the pseudo-Euclidean space with signature$$(n',n'')$$ ,$$n'\ge 2$$ ,$$n''\ge 2$$ . We analyze the normal operator$$L'L$$ , derive an inversion formula, and prove stability estimates. We show that the symbol$$p(\xi )$$ is elliptic but singular at the light cone$$\mathcal {L}$$ with conormal singularities there. We analyzeLas a Fourier Integral Operator as well. Finally, we compare this to the Minkowski case.more » « less
