This chapter serves as a review of the literature concerning the use of laser flash photolysis (LFP) in research reported between the years 2015 and 2018. The first half of the chapter primarily focuses on fundamental studies to characterize reactive intermediates and elucidate their reaction mechanisms, with special attention to a new LFP technique that allows transient absorption to be obtained in crystals. The detection and identification of excited states and their reactivity is also addressed. The second half of the chapter focuses on the use of LFP to understand and influence the development of photochemistry applications such as synthesis, photocages, polymerization, and photocatalysis. Finally, we briefly mention research that uses LFP but is outside the main focus of this chapter, such as the analysis of biological systems and environmental studies.

This chapter explores digital creative entrepreneurship as it is impacted by data connectivity and communication infrastructure in remote communities of the North American Arctic. In addition to summarizing details related to access, data speeds and bandwidth in specific regions of the North, this chapter looks at values-based Arctic digital entrepreneurial curricular development, collaborative possibilities between Nunavut and Alaska, and cites opportunities and challenges for the Arctic’s Indigenous creative economy. Similarities and differences between the United States and Canadian Arctic in terms of opportunity and networking based on the digital connectivity and the cost of access are also explored. The chapter offers specific examples related to opportunities and barriers for Arctic small business development given variances in digital access. The chapter concludes with a number of important policy recommendations for government and industry.more » « less

Polyploidy, or whole genome duplication, is a common phenomenon in plants, but the establishment and persistence of mixed-ploidy populations remains a paradox. This dissertation explores factors that contribute to the persistence and establishment of mixed-ploidy populations in nature. The first chapter investigates the role of unreduced gametes in neopolyploid establishment and finds that variability in their formation rate can have a significant impact on polyploid establishment and persistence. The second chapter searches for evidence of soil microbes exhibiting ploidy-specificity, a pre-condition for microbe-mediated niche differentiation, a possible stabilizing mechanism contributing to ploidy coexistence. Finally, the third chapter tests for microbe-mediated niche differentiation in a mixed-ploidy population of Larrea tridentata. Using a plant-soil feedback experiment this chapter demonstrates that microbe-mediated niche differentiation can facilitate the coexistence of different ploidy levels. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates there are complex and interrelated factors that contribute to the persistence and establishment of mixed-ploidy populations in nature.more » « less

Abstract Chapter 7 is the most popular bankruptcy system for U.S. firms and individuals. Chapter 7 professional fees are substantial. Theoretically, high fees might be an unavoidable cost of incentivizing professionals. I test this empirically. I study trustees, the most important professionals in chapter 7, who liquidate assets in exchange for legally mandated commissions. Exploiting kinks in the commission function, I estimate a structural model of moral hazard by trustees. I show that a policy change lowering trustee fees would harm trustee incentives, reducing liquidation values. Nonetheless, such a policy would dramatically improve creditor recovery, increasing small-business-lender recovery by 15.7%.
