PurposeTo determine if contemporary 0.55 T MRI supports the use of contrast‐optimal flip angles (FA) for simultaneous multi‐slice (SMS) balanced SSFP (bSSFP) cardiac function assessment, which is impractical at conventional field strengths because of excessive SAR and/or banding artifacts. MethodsBlipped‐CAIPI bSSFP was combined with spiral sampling for ventricular function assessment at 0.55 T. Cine movies with single band and SMS factors of 2 and 3 (SMS 2 and 3), and FA ranging from 60° to 160°, were acquired in seven healthy volunteers. Left ventricular blood and myocardial signal intensity (SI) normalized by background noise and blood–myocardium contrast were measured and compared across acquisition settings. ResultsMyocardial SI was slightly higher in single band than in SMS and decreased with an increasing FA. Blood SI increased as the FA increased for single band, and increment was small for FA ≥120°. Blood SI for SMS 2 and 3 increased with an increasing FA up to ∼100°. Blood–myocardium contrast increased with an increasing FA for single band, peaked at FA = 160° (systole: 28.43, diastole: 29.15), attributed mainly to reduced myocardial SI when FA ≥120°. For SMS 2, contrast peaked at 120° (systole: 21.43, diastole: 19.85). For SMS 3, contrast peaked at 120° in systole (16.62) and 100° in diastole (19.04). ConclusionsContemporary 0.55 T MR scanners equipped with high‐performance gradient systems allow the use of contrast‐optimal FA for SMS accelerated bSSFP cine examinations without compromising image quality. The contrast‐optimal FA was found to be 140° to 160° for single band and 100° to 120° for SMS 2 and 3.

Cardiac afferent signals can facilitate visual dominance in binocular rivalry
Sensory signals from the body’s visceral organs (e.g. the heart) can robustly influence the perception of exteroceptive sensations. This interoceptive-exteroceptive interaction has been argued to underlie self-awareness by situating one’s perceptual awareness of exteroceptive stimuli in the context of one’s internal state, but studies probing cardiac influences on visual awareness have yielded conflicting findings. In this study, we presented separate grating stimuli to each of subjects’ eyes as in a classic binocular rivalry paradigm – measuring the duration for which each stimulus dominates in perception. However, we caused the gratings to “pulse” at specific times relative to subjects’ real-time electrocardiogram, manipulating whether pulses occurred during cardiac systole, when baroreceptors signal to the brain that the heart has contracted, or in diastole when baroreceptors are silent. The influential “Baroreceptor Hypothesis” predicts the effect of baroreceptive input on visual perception should be uniformly suppressive. In contrast, we observed that dominance durations increased for systole-entrained stimuli, inconsistent with the Baroreceptor Hypothesis. Further, we show that this cardiac-dependent rivalry effect is preserved in subjects who are at-chance discriminating between systole-entrained and diastole-presented stimuli in a separate interoceptive awareness task, suggesting that our results are not dependent on conscious access to heartbeat sensations.

“Sickness behavior” is an orchestrated suite of symptoms that commonly occur in the context of inflammation, and is characterized by changes in affect, social experience, and behavior. However, recent evidence suggests that inflammation may not always produce the same set of sickness behavior (e.g., fatigue, anhedonia, and social withdrawal). Rather, inflammation may be linked with different behavior across contexts and/or across in- dividuals, though research in this area is under-developed to-date. In the present study (n = 30), we evaluated the influence of affective context and individual differences in difficulty detecting bodily sensations (i.e., interoceptive difficulty) on social perception following an inflammatory challenge. Inflammation was induced using the influenza vaccine and inflammatory reactivity was operationalized as changes in circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) before the vaccine and approximately 24 h later. Twenty-four hours after administration of the influenza vaccine, we manipulated affective context using a well-validated affect misattribution task in which participants made trustworthiness judgments of individuals with neutral facial expressions following the rapid presentation of “prime” images that were positive or negative in affective content. Interoceptive difficulty was measured at baseline using a validated self-report measure. Results revealed significant interactions between inflammatory reactivity to the influenza vaccine and affective context on social perception. Specifically, in- dividuals with greater inflammatory reactivity were more biased by affective context when judging the trust- worthiness of neutral faces. In addition, interoceptive difficulty and affective context interacted to predict social perception such that individuals with greater interoceptive difficulty were more biased by affective context in these judgments. In sum, we provide some of the first evidence that inflammation may amplify the saliency of affective cues during social decision making. Our findings also replicate prior work linking interoceptive ability to the use of affect-as-information during social perception, but in the novel context of inflammation.more » « less

Abstract PurposeTo determine the feasibility of simultaneous multi‐slice (SMS) real‐time MRI (RT‐MRI) at 0.55T for the evaluation of cardiac function. MethodsCardiac CINE MRI is routinely used to evaluate left‐ventricular (LV) function. The standard is sequential multi‐slice balanced SSFP (bSSFP) over a stack of short‐axis slices using electrocardiogram (ECG) gating and breath‐holds. SMS has been used in CINE imaging to reduce the number of breath‐holds by a factor of 2–4 at 1.5T, 3T, and recently at 0.55T. This work aims to determine if SMS is similarly effective in the RT‐MRI evaluation of cardiac function. We used an SMS bSSFP pulse sequence with golden‐angle spirals at 0.55T with an SMS factor of three. We cover the LV with three acquisitions for SMS, and nine for single‐band (SB). Imaging was performed on 9 healthy volunteers and 1 patient with myocardial fibrosis and sternal wires. A spatio‐temporal constrained reconstruction is used, with regularization parameters selected by a board‐certified cardiologist. Images were quantitatively analyzed with a normalized contrast and an Edge Sharpness (ES) score. ResultsThere was a statistically significant 2‐fold difference in contrast between SMS and SB and no significant difference in ES score. The contrast for SMS and SB were 13.38/29.05 at mid‐diastole and 10.79/22.26 at end‐systole; the ES scores for SMS and SB were 1.77/1.83 at mid‐diastole and 1.50/1.72 at end‐systole. ConclusionsSMS cardiac RT‐MRI at 0.55T is feasible and provides sufficient blood‐myocardium contrast to evaluate LV function in three slices simultaneously without any gating or periodic motion assumptions.more » « less

Abstract The skin conductance (SC) and eye tracking data are two potential arousal-related psychophysiological signals that can serve as the interoceptive unconditioned response to aversive stimuli (e.g. electric shocks). The current research investigates the sensitivity of these signals in detecting mild electric shock by decoding the hidden arousal and interoceptive awareness (IA) states. While well-established frameworks exist to decode the arousal state from the SC signal, there is a lack of a systematic approach that decodes the IA state from pupillometry and eye gaze measurements. We extract the physiological-based features from eye tracking data to recover the IA-related neural activity. Employing a Bayesian filtering framework, we decode the IA state in fear conditioning and extinction experiments where mild electric shock is used. We independently decode the underlying arousal state using binary and marked point process (MPP) observations derived from concurrently collected SC data. Eight of 11 subjects present a significantly (P-value <0.001) higher IA state in trials that were always accompanied by electric shock (CS+US+) compared to trials that were never accompanied by electric shock (CS−). According to the decoded SC-based arousal state, only five (binary observation) and four (MPP observation) subjects present a significantly higher arousal state in CS+US+ trials than CS− trials. In conclusion, the decoded hidden brain state from eye tracking data better agrees with the presented mild stimuli. Tracking IA state from eye tracking data can lead to the development of contactless monitors for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.more » « less

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental speech disorder associated with motor timing that differs from non-stutterers. While neurodevelopmental disorders impacted by timing are associated with compromised auditory-motor integration and interoception, the interplay between those abilities and stuttering remains unexplored. Here, we studied the relationships between speech auditory-motor synchronization (a proxy for auditory-motor integration), interoceptive awareness, and self-reported stuttering severity using remotely delivered assessments. Results indicate that in general, stutterers and non-stutterers exhibit similar auditory-motor integration and interoceptive abilities. However, while speech auditory-motor synchrony (i.e., integration) and interoceptive awareness were not related, speech synchrony was inversely related to the speaker’s perception of stuttering severity as perceived by others, and interoceptive awareness was inversely related to self-reported stuttering impact. These findings support claims that stuttering is a heterogeneous, multi-faceted disorder such that uncorrelated auditory-motor integration and interoception measurements predicted different aspects of stuttering, suggesting two unrelated sources of timing differences associated with the disorder.more » « less
