Title: Energy-shaping control of a muscular octopus arm moving in three dimensions
Flexible octopus arms exhibit an exceptional ability to coordinate large numbers of degrees of freedom and perform complex manipulation tasks. As a consequence, these systems continue to attract the attention of biologists and roboticists alike. In this article, we develop a three-dimensional model of a soft octopus arm, equipped with biomechanically realistic muscle actuation. Internal forces and couples exerted by all major muscle groups are considered. An energy-shaping control method is described to coordinate muscle activity so as to grasp and reach in three-dimensional space. Key contributions of this article are as follows: (i) modelling of major muscle groups to elicit three-dimensional movements; (ii) a mathematical formulation for muscle activations based on a stored energy function; and (iii) a computationally efficient procedure to design task-specific equilibrium configurations, obtained by solving an optimization problem in the Special Euclidean group SE ( 3 ) . Muscle controls are then iteratively computed based on the co-state variable arising from the solution of the optimization problem. The approach is numerically demonstrated in the physically accurate software environmentElastica. Results of numerical experiments mimicking observed octopus behaviours are reported.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A test of lepton flavor universality in B ± K ± μ + μ and B ± K ± e + e decays, as well as a measurement of differential and integrated branching fractions of a nonresonant B ± K ± μ + μ decay are presented. The analysis is made possible by a dedicated data set of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV recorded in 2018, by the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a special high-rate data stream designed for collecting about 10 billion unbiased b hadron decays. The ratio of the branching fractions B ( B ± K ± μ + μ ) to B ( B ± K ± e + e ) is determined from the measured double ratio R ( K ) of these decays to the respective branching fractions of the B ± J / ψ K ± with J / ψ μ + μ and e + e decays, which allow for significant cancellation of systematic uncertainties. The ratio R ( K ) is measured in the range 1.1 < q 2 < 6.0 GeV 2 , whereqis the invariant mass of the lepton pair, and is found to be R ( K ) = 0.78 0.23 + 0.47 , in agreement with the standard model expectation R ( K ) 1 . This measurement is limited by the statistical precision of the electron channel. The integrated branching fraction in the sameq2range, B ( B ± K ± μ + μ ) = ( 12.42 ± 0.68 ) × 10 8 , is consistent with the present world-average value and has a comparable precision.

  2. Abstract The production of a pair of τ leptons via photon–photon fusion, γ γ τ τ , is observed for the first time in proton–proton collisions, with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. This observation is based on a data set recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Events with a pair of τ leptons produced via photon–photon fusion are selected by requiring them to be back-to-back in the azimuthal direction and to have a minimum number of charged hadrons associated with their production vertex. The τ leptons are reconstructed in their leptonic and hadronic decay modes. The measured fiducial cross section of γ γ τ τ is σ obs fid = 12.4 3.1 + 3.8 fb . Constraints are set on the contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment ( a τ ) and electric dipole moments ( d τ ) of the τ lepton originating from potential effects of new physics on the γ τ τ vertex: a τ = 0.0009 0.0031 + 0.0032 and | d τ | < 2.9 × 10 17 e cm (95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model.

  3. Abstract We consider a process of noncollidingq-exchangeable random walks on Z making steps 0 (‘straight’) and −1 (‘down’). A single random walk is calledq-exchangeable if under an elementary transposition of the neighboring steps ( down , straight ) ( straight , down ) the probability of the trajectory is multiplied by a parameter q ( 0 , 1 ) . Our process ofmnoncollidingq-exchangeable random walks is obtained from the independentq-exchangeable walks via the Doob’sh-transform for a nonnegative eigenfunctionh(expressed via theq-Vandermonde product) with the eigenvalue less than 1. The system ofmwalks evolves in the presence of an absorbing wall at 0. The repulsion mechanism is theq-analogue of the Coulomb repulsion of random matrix eigenvalues undergoing Dyson Brownian motion. However, in our model, the particles are confined to the positive half-line and do not spread as Brownian motions or simple random walks. We show that the trajectory of the noncollidingq-exchangeable walks started from an arbitrary initial configuration forms a determinantal point process, and express its kernel in a double contour integral form. This kernel is obtained as a limit from the correlation kernel ofq-distributed random lozenge tilings of sawtooth polygons. In the limit as m , q = e γ / m withγ > 0 fixed, and under a suitable scaling of the initial data, we obtain a limit shape of our noncolliding walks and also show that their local statistics are governed by the incomplete beta kernel. The latter is a distinguished translation invariant ergodic extension of the two-dimensional discrete sine kernel.

  4. We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum X max , inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the X max distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ( 10 20 eV ), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the fluorescence detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average X max with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at 6.5 ± 0.6 ( stat ) ± 1 ( syst ) EeV , 11 ± 2 ( stat ) ± 1 ( syst ) EeV , and 31 ± 5 ( stat ) ± 3 ( syst ) EeV , in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured X max distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 and 100 EeV. 5. Abstract We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the [CI] 492 and 806 GHz fine-structure lines in 25 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) atz= 4.3 in the core of the SPT2349–56 protocluster. The protocluster galaxies exhibit a median L [ C I ] ( 2 1 ) / L [ C I ] ( 1 0 ) ratio of 0.94, with an interquartile range of 0.81–1.24. These ratios are markedly different to those observed in DSFGs in the field (across a comparable redshift and 850μm flux density range), where the median is 0.55, with an interquartile range of 0.50–0.76, and we show that this difference is driven by an excess of [Ci](2–1) in the protocluster galaxies for a given 850μm flux density. Assuming local thermal equilibrium, we estimate gas excitation temperatures of T ex = 59 . 1 6.8 + 8.1 K for our protocluster sample and T ex = 33 . 9 2.2 + 2.4 K for the field sample. Our main interpretation of this result is that the protocluster galaxies have had their cold gas driven to their cores via close-by interactions within the dense environment, leading to an overall increase in the average gas density and excitation temperature, as well as an elevated [Ci](2–1) luminosity-to-far-infrared-luminosity ratio.
