The confined variational method is used to study the elastic scattering of the positron from the ground-state helium with the scattering energy in the range from 0.05 eV to 11.02 eV. Describing the correlation effect with explicitly correlated Gaussians, we obtain accurate phase shifts, S-wave scattering length, elastic scattering cross sections, and annihilation parameters for different incident momenta. Specifically, by a least-squares fit of the data to the effective-range theory, we determine the room temperature annihilation parameter Zeff = 3.955, which is in perfect agreement with the measured result of 3.94 ± 0.02 [J. Phys. B 8, 1734 (1975)].

Confined variational calculation of low-energy Ps- Li+ scattering
A theoretical investigation is conducted on the s- and p-wave elastic scatterings of positronium by a lithium ion Li+ with the scattering energy below 1.41 eV, corresponding to the threshold of the e+-Li channel. The confined variational method is applied to serve as the theoretical framework for this study. To accurately account for correlations between involved particles, explicitly correlated Gaussians are employed as basis functions, which are optimized through a hybrid approach combining stochastic variational and energy-gradient-based methods. Additionally, a straightforward yet effective algorithm is developed for the automatic adjustment of confining potentials. The s-wave zero-energy pickoff annihilation parameter 1Zeff,0 is accurately determined to be 0.126 ± 0.002, which yields an enhancement factor of 1.88 compared with the value 0.067 obtained using the fixed-core stochastic variational method [Phys. Rev. A 65, 034709 (2002)]. Finally, a broad p-wave resonance structure is predicted at the incident energy of approximately 0.27 eV, with the annihilation parameter 1Zeff,1 at the resonance center estimated to be around 0.034.

We measure the branching fraction of the decay using data collected with the Belle II detector. The data contain 387 million pairs produced in collisions at the resonance. We reconstruct decays from an analysis of the distributions of the energy and the helicity angle. We determine the branching fraction to be , in agreement with previous results. Our measurement improves the relative precision of the world average by more than a factor of two. Published by the American Physical Society2024more » « less

: The reaction, determining the survival of carbon in red giants, is of interest for nuclear reaction theory and nuclear astrophysics. A specific feature of the nuclear structure is the presence of two subthreshold bound states, (6.92 MeV, ) and (7.12 MeV, ), that dominate the behavior of the low-energy factor. The strength of these subthreshold states is determined by their asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs), which need to be known with high accuracy. : The objective of this research is to examine how the subthreshold and ground-state ANCs impact the low-energy factor, especially at the key astrophysical energy of . The factors are calculated within the framework of the -matrix method using the code. Our total factor takes into account the and transitions to the ground state of including the interference of the subthreshold and higher resonances, which also interfere with the corresponding direct captures, and cascade radiative captures to the ground state of through four subthreshold states: , and . To evaluate the impact of subthreshold ANCs on the low-energy factor, we employ two sets of the ANCs. The first selection, which offers higher ANC values, is attained through the extrapolation process [Blokhintsev , ]. The set with low ANC values was employed by deBoer []. A detailed comparison of the factors at the most effective astrophysical energy of 300 keV is provided, along with an investigation into how the ground-state ANC affects this factor. : The contribution to the total and factors from the corresponding subthreshold resonances at are and , respectively. The correlation of the uncertainties of the subthreshold ANCs with the and factors is found. The transition of the subthreshold resonance does not depend on the ground-state ANC but interferes constructively with a broad resonance giving (for the present subthreshold ANC) an additional contribution to the total factor. Interference of the transition through the subthreshold resonance with direct capture is almost negligible for small ground-state ANC of . However, its interference with direct capture for higher ground-state ANC of is significant and destructive, contributing . The low-energy factor experiences a smaller increase when both subthfreshold and the ground-state ANCs rise together due to their anticorrelation, compared to when only the subthreshold ANCs increase. We report on a search for a resonance decaying to a pair of muons in events in the mass range, using of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of beyond the standard model: a vector boson in the model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society2024more » « less

We search for the rare decay in a sample of electron-positron collisions at the resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying meson in events to suppress background from other decays of the signal candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the branching fraction of and , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay to be , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society2024more » « less
