A<sc>bstract</sc> A measurement of theCP-violating parameters in$$ {B}_s^0\boldsymbol{\to}{D}_s^{\mp }{K}^{\pm} $$ decays is reported, based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured parameters are obtained with a decay-time dependent analysis yieldingCf= 0.791 ± 0.061 ± 0.022,$$ {A}_f^{\Delta \Gamma} $$ = −0.051 ± 0.134 ± 0.058,$$ {A}_{\overline{f}}^{\Delta \Gamma} $$ = −0.303 ± 0.125 ± 0.055,Sf= −0.571 ± 0.084 ± 0.023 and$$ {S}_{\overline{f}} $$ = −0.503 ± 0.084 ± 0.025, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This corresponds to CP violation in the interference between mixing and decay of about 8.6σ. Together with the value of the$$ {B}_s^0 $$ mixing phase −2βs, these parameters are used to obtain a measurement of the CKM angleγequal to (74 ± 12)° modulo 180°, where the uncertainty contains both statistical and systematic contributions. This result is combined with the previous LHCb measurement in this channel using 3 fb−1resulting in a determination of$$ \gamma ={\left({81}_{-11}^{+12}\right)}^{\circ } $$ .

Improved Astrophysical and Computational Oscillator Strengths for Ultraviolet P ii Lines
Abstract Abundance measurements for the volatile element phosphorus are important for measuring the metallicity in interstellar and circumgalactic gas, where their accuracies are limited by uncertainties in the oscillator strengths. We report updated oscillator strength values for two resonant transitions of the dominant ion PII, the transitions at 961.041 and 963.801 Å, which have historically shown large uncertainties. Using a combination of observational measurements and highly accurate quasi-relativistic Hartree–Fock theoretical calculations, we present an updated oscillator strength off= 0.147 ± 0.021 for the poorly constrained PIIresonant transition at 961.401 Å, which arises from the ground electronic state 3s23p23P0to the excited level 3s23p3d3D . This result utilizes archival optical spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope for the quasar PKS 0528–250, which has a damped Lyαabsorber atz= 2.811. We calculate a theoreticalf-value = 0.153 for 961.401 Å consistent with our empirically derived value, and calculate a theoreticalf-value = 1.79 for 963.801 Å. We also present theoretical oscillator strengths for the PIIresonant transitions at 972.779, 1124.945, 1152.818, 1301.874, and 1532.533 Å, as well as for multiple PIIfine-structure and excited-level transitions. The updatedf-value for the PII961 Å transition will be useful in future studies of P abundances, especially in sight lines where the 1152 Å line is saturated.

Abstract We use medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy of close pairs of quasars to analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding 32 damped Lyαabsorption systems (DLAs). The primary quasar sightline in each pair probes an intervening DLA in the redshift range 1.6 <zabs< 3.5, such that the secondary sightline probes absorption from Lyαand a large suite of metal-line transitions (including Oi, Cii, Civ, Siii, and Siiv) in the DLA host galaxy’s CGM at transverse distances 24 kpc ≤R⊥≤ 284 kpc. Analysis of Lyαin the CGM sightlines shows an anticorrelation betweenR⊥and Hicolumn density (NHI) with 99.8% confidence, similar to that observed around luminous galaxies. The incidences of Ciiand SiiiwithN> 1013cm−2within 100 kpc of DLAs are larger by 2σthan those measured in the CGM of Lyman break galaxies (Cf(NCII) > 0.89 and ). Metallicity constraints derived from ionic ratios for nine CGM systems with negligible ionization corrections andNHI> 1018.5cm−2show a significant degree of scatter (with metallicities/limits across the range ), suggesting inhomogeneity in the metal distribution in these environments. Velocity widths of Civλ1548 and low-ionization metal species in the DLA versus CGM sightlines are strongly (>2σ) correlated, suggesting that they trace the potential well of the host halo overR⊥≲ 300 kpc scales. At the same time, velocity centroids for Civλ1548 differ in DLA versus CGM sightlines by >100 km s−1for ∼50% of velocity components, but few components have velocities that would exceed the escape velocity assuming dark matter host halos of ≥1012M⊙.more » « less

A<sc>bstract</sc> The production cross sections of$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ and B+mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb−1. The cross sections are based on measurements of the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ →J/ψ(μ+μ−)ϕ(1020)(K+K−) and B+→J/ψ(μ+μ−)K+decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum (pT) range 7–50 GeV/cand the rapidity interval |y|<2.4 for the B mesons. The measuredpT-differential cross sections of B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors,RAA, of the B mesons are determined. ForpT>10 GeV/c, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (withRAAvalues significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ mesons. In thispTrange, theRAAvalues for the B+mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D0mesons. Below 10 GeV/c, both B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D0mesons, with the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ RAAvalue consistent with unity. TheRAAvalues found for the B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.more » « less

Abstract We present the results of a new reverberation mapping campaign for the broad-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the edge-on spiral IC 4329A. Monitoring of the optical continuum withV-band photometry and broad emission-line flux variability with moderate-resolution spectroscopy allowed emission-line light curves to be measured for Hβ, Hγ, and Heiiλ4686. We find a time delay of days for Hβ, a similar time delay of days for Hγ, and an unresolved time delay of days for Heii. The time delay for Hβis consistent with the predicted value from the relationship between AGN luminosity and broad-line region radius, after correction for the ∼2.4 mag of intrinsic extinction at 5100 Å. Combining the measured time delay for Hβwith the broad emission-line width and an adopted value of 〈f〉 = 4.8, we find a central supermassive black hole mass of M⊙. Velocity-resolved time delays were measured across the broad Hβemission-line profile and may be consistent with an “M”-like shape. Modeling of the full reverberation response of Hβwas able to provide only modest constraints on some parameters, but does exhibit agreement with the black hole mass and average time delay. The models also suggest that the AGN structure is misaligned by a large amount from the edge-on galaxy disk. This is consistent with expectations from the unified model of AGNs, in which broad emission lines are expected to be visible only for AGNs that are viewed at relatively face-on inclinations.more » « less

A<sc>bstract</sc> We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays$$ {B}_s^0 $$ →ℓ∓τ±, whereℓ=e, μ, using the full data sample of 121 fb−1collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energye+e−collider. We use$$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ events in which one$$ {B}_s^0 $$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the other in the signal mode. We find no evidence for$$ {B}_s^0 $$ → ℓ∓τ±decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level as$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ → e∓τ±)<14×10−4and$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ → μ∓τ±)<7.3×10−4. Our result represents the first upper limit on the$$ {B}_s^0 $$ → e∓τ±decay rate.more » « less
