Title: Bottom quark energy loss and hadronization with B+ and $$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ nuclear modification factors using pp and PbPb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV
Abstract The production cross sections of$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 and B+mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb−1. The cross sections are based on measurements of the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 →J/ψ(μ+μ)ϕ(1020)(K+K) and B+→J/ψ(μ+μ)K+decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum (pT) range 7–50 GeV/cand the rapidity interval |y|<2.4 for the B mesons. The measuredpT-differential cross sections of B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors,RAA, of the B mesons are determined. ForpT>10 GeV/c, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (withRAAvalues significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 mesons. In thispTrange, theRAAvalues for the B+mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D0mesons. Below 10 GeV/c, both B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D0mesons, with the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 RAAvalue consistent with unity. TheRAAvalues found for the B+and$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The production of prompt$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ baryons is measured via the exclusive decay channel$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+}\to p{\textrm{K}}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $$ Λc+pKπ+ at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, using proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The pp and PbPb data were obtained in 2017 and 2018 with integrated luminosities of 252 and 0.607 nb−1, respectively. The measurements are performed within the$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ rapidity interval |y|<1 with transverse momentum (pT) ranges of 3–30 and 6–40 GeV/cfor pp and PbPb collisions, respectively. Compared to the yields in pp collisions scaled by the expected number of nucleon-nucleon interactions, the observed yields of$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ withpT>10 GeV/care strongly suppressed in PbPb collisions. The level of suppression depends significantly on the collision centrality. The$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ /D0production ratio is similar in PbPb and pp collisions atpT>10 GeV/c, suggesting that the coalescence process does not play a dominant role in prompt$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ baryon production at higherpT

  2. Abstract Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt D0, D+, D*+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ , and$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ charm hadrons at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (pT) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios ofpT-differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x(10−5–10−4). The measurements of$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ($$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ ) baryon production extend the measuredpTintervals down topT= 0(3) GeV/c. These measurements are used to determine the charm-quark fragmentation fractions and the$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) based on the sum of the cross sections of the weakly-decaying ground-state charm hadrons D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ ,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^0 $$ Ξc0 and, for the first time,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ , and of the strongly-decaying J/ψmesons. The first measurements of$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Ξc+ and$$ {\Sigma}_{\textrm{c}}^{0,++} $$ Σc0,++ fragmentation fractions at midrapidity are also reported. A significantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e+eand ep collisions. The$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ cc¯ production cross section at midrapidity is found to be at the upper bound of state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations.

  3. Abstract The production of strange hadrons ($$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , Ξ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , and Ω/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 ), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ±and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadronpT(0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with Pythia8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadronpTregion. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ±and Ω±which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p−Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

  4. Abstract The effective lifetime of the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 meson in the decay$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0\to \textrm{J}/{\uppsi \textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ Bs0J/ψKS0 is measured using data collected during 2016–2018 with the CMS detector in$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The effective lifetime is determined by performing a two-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ Bs0 meson invariant mass and proper decay time distributions. The resulting value of 1.59 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.03(syst) ps is the most precise measurement to date and is in good agreement with the expected value.

  5. Abstract The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ sNN =5.02 TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum$$4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 4<pTe<16GeV/c , considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range$$1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$$ 1<pTassoc<7 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV/c , and a pseudorapidity difference of$$|\Delta \eta |<1$$ |Δη|<1 between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ($$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ s=5.02 TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with$$p_\textrm{T}<3$$ pT<3 GeV/con the near side, and a suppression of yields with$$p_\textrm{T}>4$$ pT>4 GeV/con the away side. The$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.
