Detecting and avoiding obstacles while navigating can pose a challenge for people with low vision, but augmented reality (AR) has the potential to assist by enhancing obstacle visibility. Perceptual and user experience research is needed to understand how to craft effective AR visuals for this purpose. We developed a prototype AR application capable of displaying multiple kinds of visual cues for obstacles on an optical see-through head-mounted display. We assessed the usability of these cues via a study in which participants with low vision navigated an obstacle course. The results suggest that 3D world-locked AR cues were superior to directional heads-up cues for most participants during this activity.

Augmented Reality as a Tool for Studying Visual Plasticity: 2009 to 2018
Augmented reality (AR) has developed rapidly since its conception less than 30 years ago and is now a hot topic for both consumers and scientists. Although much attention has been paid to its application in industry, medicine, education, and entertainment, the use of AR in psychological research has been less noted. In this article, we survey recent progress in basic research that uses AR to explore the plasticity of the adult visual system. We focus on a particular application of AR called altered reality, which has been used to shed new light on mechanisms of long-term contrast adaptation and ocular-dominance plasticity. The results suggest that AR could also be a useful tool for the treatment of visual disorders.

In some respects, colour in AR and VR can be modelled and controlled much like colour in other display technologies. However, it is complicated by the optics required for near‐eye display, and in the case of AR, by the merging of real‐world and virtual visual stimuli. Methods have been developed to provide predictable colour in VR, and ongoing research has exposed details of the visual perception of real and virtual in AR. Virtual reality (VR) simulations have been adopted to provide controllable environments for running augmented reality (AR) experiments in diverse scenarios. However, insufficient research has explored the impact of AR applications on users, especially their attention patterns, and whether VR simulations accurately replicate these effects. In this work, we propose to analyze user attention patterns via eye tracking during XR usage. To represent applications that provide both helpful guidance and irrelevant information, we built a Sudoku Helper app that includes visual hints and potential distractions during the puzzle-solving period. We conducted two user studies with 19 different users each in AR and VR, in which we collected eye tracking data, conducted gaze-based analysis, and trained machine learning (ML) models to predict user attentional states and attention control ability. Our results show that the AR app had a statistically significant impact on enhancing attention by increasing the fixated proportion of time, while the VR app reduced fixated time and made the users less focused. Results indicate that there is a discrepancy between VR simulations and the AR experience. Our ML models achieve 99.3% and 96.3% accuracy in predicting user attention control ability in AR and VR, respectively. A noticeable performance drop when transferring models trained on one medium to the other further highlights the gap between the AR experience and the VR simulation of it.more » « less

Augmented reality (AR) technologies have seen significant improvement in recent years with several consumer and commercial solutions being developed. New security challenges arise as AR becomes increasingly ubiquitous. Previous work has proposed techniques for securing the output of AR devices and used reinforcement learning (RL) to train security policies which can be difficult to define manually. However, whether such systems and policies can be deployed on a physical AR device without degrading performance was left an open question. We develop a visual output security application using a RL trained policy and deploy it on a Magic Leap One head-mounted AR device. Ballin, Daniel; Macredie, Robert D (Ed.)The use of multimodal data allows excellent opportunities for human–computer interaction research and novel techniques regarding virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) experiences. Collecting, coordinating, and synchronizing a large amount of data from multiple VR/AR hardware while maintaining a high framerate can be a daunting task, despite the compelling nature of multimodal data. The Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) is an open-source framework that enables the synchronous collection of various types of multimodal data, unlike existing expensive alternatives. However, despite its potential, this framework has not been fully adopted by the VR/AR research community. In this paper, we present a guideline of the LSL framework’s use in VR/AR research as well as report current trends by performing a comprehensive literature review on the subject. We extract 549 publications using LSL from January 2015 to March 2022. We analyze types of data, displays, and targeted application areas. We describe in-depth reviews of 38 selected papers and provide use of LSL in the VR/AR research community while highlighting benefits, challenges, and future opportunities.more » « less
