Title: An interaction analysis of a computer science co-design conversation on cultural relevance and its implications for design
This paper uses interaction analysis to examine an episode moment-by-moment of how a group of educators recognized and acknowledged that a specific design decision could be harmful for a historically marginalized population of students enrolled in the district. However, once a key change was made to be more culturally responsive and considerate, new and unexpected pedagogical challenges appeared. This case serves to illustrate some of the unexpected tensions that can appear in real-time when unanticipated questions about cultural relevance are foregrounded during lesson and materials co-design. It also serves as a reminder that educational technologies are not “race” neutral.  more » « less

  1. The learning sciences community is currently exploring new ways to enact productive and equitable co-design research-practice partnerships that are sensitive to all the concerns and needs of stakeholders. The paper contributes to that still-growing literature through an interaction analysis of a co-design discussion involving school district partners that unfolded about cultural relevance and sensitivity in relation to the use of a specific image in an elementary school coding lesson. The episode involved looking moment-by-moment at how district educators recognized and acknowledged that a specific design decision could be harmful for a minoritized population of students enrolled in the district. However, once a key change was made to be more culturally responsive and considerate, new and unexpected pedagogical challenges appeared. This case serves to illustrate some of the unexpected tensions that can appear in real-time when unanticipated questions about cultural relevance are foregrounded during lesson and materials co-design.

  4. A robust system should perform well under random failures or targeted attacks, and networks have been widely used to model the underlying structure of complex systems such as communication, infrastructure, and transportation networks. Hence, network robustness becomes critical to understanding system robustness. In this paper, we propose a spectral measure for network robustness: the second spectral moment m2 of the network. Our results show that a smaller second spectral moment m2 indicates a more robust network. We demonstrate both theoretically and with extensive empirical studies that the second spectral moment can help (1) capture various traditional measures of network robustness; (2) assess the robustness of networks; (3) design networks with controlled robustness; and (4) study how complex networked systems (e.g., power systems) behave under cascading failures.

  5. Abstract Advancing mechanoresponsive materials require novel mechanophores, though clear and structured design guidelines are still emerging. In this work, we present a systematic workflow aimed at facilitating the design and discovery of new mechanophores. By integrating the classic iso-metrical CoGEF approach with our innovative iso-tensional Tension Model of Bond Activation (TMBA) simulation, the workflow described herein enables comprehensive evaluation of mechanophore candidates prior to experimental implementation, with a practical case study included for detailed illustration. This predictive capability allows computational screening, efficient identification and filtering away unexpected issues while providing valuable insights for potential structural optimization.
