Title: Elementary School Learner Comic-Based Digital Storytelling on Digital Safety
This study highlights the potential of using comic-based digital storytelling as an instructional strategy for digital safety education. Guided by the multimodal literacy theory, the study employs character analysis and biterm topic modeling to identify prevalent themes within the curated Pixton comics of 20 students. The study revealed digital footprint, netiquette, and privacy as key themes in student's comics. Comic characters represented students' self-inserts and revealed expressions of their understanding of the topics.  more » « less

  1. Digital Safety refers to the knowledge and skills needed for the intentional protection of users in the digital environment. With children having access to digital devices at a young age, it has become essential for them to be educated on how to be safe in the digital world. Through a week-long summer camp on digital safety, elementary-age learners were introduced to four topics (digital identity and digital footprint, cyberbullying, netiquette, and digital security and privacy). This study found that the digital safety immersion camp was beneficial to elementary school learners based on the achievement, attitude, and behavior data that were collected. Posttest scores were statistically significant from the pre-test. Cyberbullying topic had the highest pre- and post-knowledge, whereas netiquette and online behavior, and digital security and privacy had comparatively lesser scores. Students demonstrated positive attitudes in the post-camp survey and they also included several lessons learned from the camp in the Pixton comic strip, which they created as the final project from the camp. The findings from this study contribute to the current literature on preparing elementary school students’ knowledge and skills related to digital safety and have implications for students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

  2. This article describes the use of a comic book to anchor a cryptology and cybersecurity curriculum for upper elementary students. Perceptions about the comic book from 138 students across 11 afterschool programs were examined using survey, classroom observation, and interviews. Data analysis revealed that the comic book created a “macrocontext” to situate learners in an exciting adventure about cryptology and cybersecurity. Students found the characters relatable, and their perceptions were tightly tied to other components of the curriculum. Reading the word bubbles was chal- lenging at first, but got easier over time. This study illustrates how comic books can anchor unfamiliar STeM content for younger learners.

  3. Many websites and digital tools have emerged to support pretransfer students. However, there is little understanding of the perception of availability and accessibility of these digital tools. This gap is even wider for engineering transfer contexts. Since engineering students transfer differently and need more preparation, more needs to be known about engineering pretransfer. This qualitative study of elite interviews, guided by transfer student capital theory, integrates data from interviews with transfer experts and researchers, an analysis of literature, and an Internet search. The three themes emerging from this data highlight (1) the importance of accessible, accurate, and utilizable information; (2) the need for tools and resources developed for transfer students; and (3) the lack of digital resources for engineering transfer contexts. This study provides an expansive list of digital transfer tools and identifies ways to improve upon and expand these existing resources, especially into engineering education contexts.

  4. Digital citizenship, defined as exhibiting appropriate and responsible behavior with digital technology use, is an essential component of technology education. The purpose of this study was to examine K-12 educators’ perceptions of their students’ digital citizenship knowledge and practices as they relate to cyberbullying, digital footprint, digital privacy, digital netiquette, and digital identity. One hundred and seven educators responded to a survey on digital citizenship practices. Based on the educators’ perceptions, student understanding and practice of digital citizenship were rated as not well for most of the items on the survey. While educators’ perceptions of their students’ digital citizenship practices did not vary among school levels or based on their roles as teachers or technology coaches, educators who taught digital citizenship had higher perceptions of their students’ digital citizenship practices.

  5. Science comics have become an increasingly popular medium for science communication. Reputable institutions and publications such as the WHO, NASA, Nature Journal and MacMillan Publishers have published science comics to explain complex scientific and medical phenomena to the public. However, science comics that center the stories of underrepresented scientists and the ways in which their intersectional identities are transforming science have yet to be created. Concerningly, people of color, women, and LGBTQIA+ identifying continue to be underrepresented in STEMM. Studies have shown students who report feeling positive STEMM identity and ability in high school declared undergraduate STEMM majors at greater proportions. Therefore, identifying ways to foster a sense of belonging and personal interest in STEMM among secondary school students is crucial. Utilizing art and narrative storytelling, The Field Scientist challenges perceptions of what science looks like and who does science to make science more accessible, exciting and inclusive for underrepresented secondary school students.. The series follows the real biographical narratives of a diverse cohort of scientists as they recount their most memorable field experiences. The Field Scientist will be available digitally via the platform issuu.com and disseminated to secondary school students. Online surveys will be utilized to elicit audience response, assess feelings of belonging and determine the effectiveness of science comics in challenging perceptions of exclusionary scientific culture and community. Ultimately, The Field Scientist aspires to encourage adolescent audiences to view themselves as scientists and contemplate how their identities can further transform the shifting landscape of science.
