ABSTRACT The orbits of satellite galaxies encode rich information about their histories. We investigate the orbital dynamics and histories of satellite galaxies around Milky Way (MW)-mass host galaxies using the FIRE-2 cosmological simulations, which, as previous works have shown, produce satellite mass functions and spatial distributions that broadly agree with observations. We first examine trends in orbital dynamics at z = 0, including total velocity, specific angular momentum, and specific total energy: the time of infall into the MW-mass halo primarily determines these orbital properties. We then examine orbital histories, focusing on the lookback time of first infall into a host halo and pericentre distances, times, and counts. Roughly 37 per cent of galaxies with $$M_{\rm star}\lesssim 10^7\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$$ were ‘pre-processed’ as a satellite in a lower-mass group, typically $$\approx 2.7\, {\rm Gyr}$$ before falling into the MW-mass halo. Half of all satellites at z = 0 experienced multiple pericentres about their MW-mass host. Remarkably, for most (67 per cent) of these satellites, their most recent pericentre was not their minimum pericentre: the minimum typically was ∼40 per cent smaller and occurred $$\sim 6\, {\rm Gyr}$$ earlier. These satellites with growing pericentres appear to have multiple origins: for about half, their specific angular momentum gradually increased over time, while for the other half, most rapidly increased near their first apocentre, suggesting that a combination of a time-dependent MW-mass halo potential and dynamical perturbations in the outer halo caused these satellites’ pericentres to grow. Our results highlight the limitations of idealized, static orbit modelling, especially for pericentre histories.

During the early Cold War, outer space became a politically contested space, and changes in its spatial perception were related to political and ideological controversies. The article highlights the specific relevance of Euclidean geometry in representations of outer space. Focusing on illustrations and expositions in both postwar German States, it argues that shifts within the spatial imagination and representation of space corresponded with the first satellite missions and condensed debates about the future of technology and the moral legacies of the Second World War. In October 1957, Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth and a Soviet construction, urged engineers, scientists, and illustrators to find new ways of depicting and communicating the spaces of outer space to the public and to each other. For decades, space fiction had implicitly stifled theories on the relativity of space and time by hinting at traditional motifs of conquest through machines. Early spaceflight, however, was not about immediate flights to other planets, but about the orbit, a space without a traditional place, yet imagined as being of paramount importance for strategic superiority. Driven by political tensions and drawing on representations established in physics and astronomy, the first satellite projects were designed and explained as missions to places that needed to be defined and controlled because they were strange and new.

In this paper we introduce a framework that utilizes an architecture based on the Tsetlin Machine to output explain- able rules for the prediction of political violence. The framework includes a data processing pipeline, modeling architecture, and visualization tools for early warning about notable events. We conducted an experimental study to explain and predict a one of the most notable events, - a civil war. We observed that the rules that we produced are consistent with theories that emphasize the continuing risks that accumulate from a history of conflict as well as the stickiness of civil war.more » « less

This paper describes the development of the disease ecology tradition of health and medical geography including some key themes and innovations. It first grounds disease ecology in the history of ecology from the natural sciences and the human ecology traditions within the social sciences. These ecological studies of disease developed in response to limitations in the biomedical approach to studying health and disease that developed after germ theory. While the biomedical approach, which mostly focused on human biology, led to groundbreaking advances in medicine for many decades, it had its limits. Disease ecology applications have modern roots in the decades before and after World War II through colonial and tropical medicine as well as work conducted in an array of other sites, including Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and the United States when there were large efforts to create infectious diseases maps and conduct ecological analyses of diseases. Hundreds of disease ecology studies have been implemented on diverse disease systems since World War II. The field progressively broadened in scope, especially during the 1990s and beyond, with several innovations including the application of political ecology approaches to the study of health and disease. Two other recent innovations are summarized through case studies: disease ecology approaches in health intervention research and applications of theory and methods from landscape genetics. The first case study highlights the ecological and geographic heterogeneity associated with the health impacts of drinking‐water tubewell interventions in rural Bangladesh. The paper also considers ‘landscape genetics’ approaches via a case study about influenza that uses modern genetic and spatial tools along with an ecological approach; it describes how the evolution of the virus is related to human‐environment‐animal interactions. The paper concludes by outlining promising future directions for disease ecology, emphasizing the field's ongoing incorporation of new theories and methods.more » « less

Postwar recovery efforts foreground gender equality as a key component of building more liberal democracies. This review explores the burgeoning scholarship on women's rights after war, first grappling with war as a period of possibility for building new gender-inclusive institutions. We review efforts in three arenas: increasing women's political representation in postwar democratic transitions; improving access to justice for women through the extension of property rights and bodily autonomy within systems of carceral justice; and integrating women into labor markets and security sectors through various components of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. Yet these inclusionary efforts have too often sought to dismantle one form of oppression (gender inequality) without challenging others. We document how projects to center women in liberal democratic reforms following war inadvertently overlook other manifestations of violence at the core of these institutions.more » « less

Space-mounted robotics is becoming increasingly mainstream for many space missions. The aim of this article is threefold: first, to give a broad and quick overview of the importance of spacecraft-mounted robotics for future in-orbit servicing missions; second, to review the basic current approaches for modeling and control of spacecraft-mounted robotic systems; and third, to introduce some new developments in terms of modeling and control of spacecraft-mounted robotic manipulators using the language of hypercomplex numbers (dual quaternions). Some outstanding research questions and potential future directions in the field are also discussed.more » « less
