Inocybe is the largest genus in the family Inocybaceae, with approximately 1000 species worldwide. Basic data on the species diversity, geographic distribution, and the infrageneric framework of Inocybe are still incomplete because of the intricate nature of this genus, which includes numerous unrecognized taxa that exist around the world. A multigene phylogeny of the I. umbratica–paludinella group, initially designated as the “I. angustifolia subgroup”, was conducted using the ITS-28S-rpb2 nucleotide datasets. The seven species, I. alabamensis, I. angustifolia, I. argenteolutea, I. olivaceonigra, I. paludinella, I. subangustifolia, and I. umbratica, were confirmed as members of this species group. At the genus level, the I. umbratica–paludinella group is a sister to the lineage of the unifying I. castanea and an undescribed species. Inocybe sect. Umbraticae sect. nov. was proposed to accommodate species in the I. umbratica–paludinella group and the I. castanea lineage. This section now comprises eight documented species and nine new species from China, as described in this paper. Additionally, new geographical distributions of I. angustifolia and I. castanea in China are reported. The nine new species and I. angustifolia, I. castanea, I. olivaceonigra, and I. umbratica are described in detail and illustrated herein with color plates based on Chinese materials. A global key to 17 species in the section Umbraticae is provided. The results of the current study provide a more detailed basis for the accurate identification of species in the I. umbratica-paludinella group and a better understanding of their phylogenetic placement.

Schiedea waiahuluensis (Caryophyllaceae), an enigmatic new species from Kaua'i, Hawaiian Islands and the first species discovered by a drone collection system
During a survey by the National Tropical Botanical Garden drone team, an enigmatic Schiedea was observed in December 2021on steep, rocky cliff faces of the Waiahulu Valley in the Waimea Canyon of Kaua'i. Subsequently, another survey was conducted in March 2022 and, by use of a remotely controlled cutting device suspended below the drone, the first herbarium specimen was collected, as well as a seed collection of an undescribed cliff-dwelling species of Schiedea. Detailed study of the collections and plants grown at the University of California, Irvine greenhouse showed that it had enlarged, somewhat whitish sepals similar to those of cliff-dwelling S. attenuata (the sole species in sect. Leucocalyx), yet differed significantly from all other species in the genus. It also shares with S. attenuata a woody habit, hermaphroditic flowers, coloured nectar and styles 5 to 7 or 8. We describe it here as S. waiahuluensis given the only known localities are on the cliffs of this valley and place it in an enlarged sect. Leucocalyx. With the discovery of this new species, there are 36 species in this Hawaiian endemic genus.

A new genus and species of troglobiotic nicoletiid (Insecta, Zygentoma, Nicoletiidae) is described from northern Alabama, USA. The type species was collected from three caves in the Highland Rim section of the Interior Low Plateau physiographic province on the northern side of the Tennessee River Valley. Morphological and genetic analysis using the mitochondrial 16S rRNA locus show thatSpinanycta alabamensissp. nov.is quite distinct from related nicoletiids in North America. The species differs from members of other genera by its urosternum I, which in males is modified with a central pointy extension. The new species significantly extends the distribution of cave-dwelling members of the family into the southeastern United States and suggests that additional nicoletiid diversity remains to be discovered from karst regions of the eastern United States.more » « less

The Hawaiian islands are recognized as a hotspot of biodiversity, including both surface and subsurface habitats. Recent studies of Hawaiian lava tube fauna have continued to reveal new species. Here, a new species of cave dwelling talitroid amphipod in the genus Spelaeorchestia is described from lava tubes on the island of Hawai i. It is compared with the only other known cave amphipod from the Hawaiian archipelago and with a closely related cave talitroid from Japan in the genus Minamitalitrus.more » « less

A new micro-endemic species of Rhododendron is described and illustrated from botanical expeditions to the Victoria-Anepahan Mountain Range on the island of Palawan. It closely resembles Rhododendron wilkiei but differs in having leaves with laminae that are narrowly elliptic-oblanceolate, have adaxially indistinct venation, and are arranged in 4–8 active and mostly terminal pseudowhorls along the length of the stem; bracts without scales on the margin; yellow flowers with a red corolla tube interior that is densely hairy towards the base; and hairy anther filament bases. Morphological and geographical data place the species in Rhododendron sect. Schistanthe. The new species, together with a first record of Rhododendron vidalii on Palawan as part of this research, represent the tenth and eleventh members of this genus recorded from the island. A revised key to the Palawan species of Rhododendron is provided.more » « less

Cortinarius watsoneae, a new species in subgenus Myxacium, sect. Myxacium, is described from pine and mixed pine and hardwood forests from the Gulf States region of North America. It is characterized by the young lamellae that are grayish violet to pale violet, and relatively large basidiospores in comparison to C. mucosus. The ITS sequence is distinct from other members of sect. Myxacium, with 97% similarity to the closest known species, C. collinitus and C. mucosus.
