Mammalian locomotion is generated by central pattern generators (CPGs) in the spinal cord, which produce alternating flexor and extensor activities controlling the locomotor movements of each limb. Afferent feedback signals from the limbs are integrated by the CPGs to provide adaptive control of locomotion. Responses of CPG-generated neural activity to afferent feedback stimulation have been previously studied during fictive locomotion in immobilized cats. Yet, locomotion in awake, behaving animals involves dynamic interactions between central neuronal circuits, afferent feedback, musculoskeletal system, and environment. To study these complex interactions, we developed a model simulating interactions between a half-center CPG and the musculoskeletal system of a cat hindlimb. Then, we analyzed the role of afferent feedback in the locomotor adaptation from a dynamic viewpoint using the methods of dynamical systems theory and nullcline analysis. Our model reproduced limb movements during regular cat walking as well as adaptive changes of these movements when the foot steps into a hole. The model generates important insights into the mechanism for adaptive locomotion resulting from dynamic interactions between the CPG-based neural circuits, the musculoskeletal system, and the environment.

Edge Computing in Nature: Minimal pre-processing of multi-muscle ensembles of spindle signals improves discriminability of limb movements
Multiple proprioceptive signals, like those from muscle spindles, are thought to enable robust estimates of body configuration. Yet, it remains unknown whether spindle signals suffice to discriminate limb movements. Here, a simulated 4-musculotendon, 2-joint planar limb model produced repeated cycles of five end-point trajectories in forward and reverse directions, which generated spindle Ia and II afferent signals (proprioceptors for velocity and length, respectively) from each musculotendon. We find that cross-correlation of the 8D time series of raw firing rates (four Ia, four II) cannot discriminate among most movement pairs (∼ 29% accuracy). However, projecting these signals onto their 1stand 2ndprincipal components greatly improves discriminability of movement pairs (82% accuracy). We conclude that high-dimensional ensembles of muscle proprioceptors can discriminate among limb movements—but only after dimensionality reduction. This may explain the pre-processing of some afferent signals before arriving at the somatosensory cortex, such as processing of cutaneous signals at the cat’s cuneate nucleus.

Exoskeletons have the potential to support daily activities by assisting the movement performance. Previous studies have shown that powered elbow exoskeletons can reduce muscle effort during continuous cyclic movement. However, natural movements have embedded stationary hold periods as well as transitions between postures. The human performance when using exoskeletons for more natural movements should be evaluated. In this study, we implemented visual and haptic electromyography (EMG) biofeedback to help people use an upper limb exoskeleton to perform a target position matching task. Participants (n=36) did not significantly reduce their muscle effort during hold periods when provided with biofeedback. Participants had difficulty relaxing their muscles at more flexed postures during hold periods, suggesting that they continued to provide effort instead of taking advantage of the device. To fully benefit from robotic exoskeletons, additional training and more advanced controllers might be needed.more » « less

BackgroundUpper limb proprioceptive impairments are common after stroke and affect daily function. Recent work has shown that stroke survivors have difficulty using visual information to improve proprioception. It is unclear how eye movements are impacted to guide action of the arm after stroke. Here, we aimed to understand how upper limb proprioceptive impairments impact eye movements in individuals with stroke. MethodsControl (N = 20) and stroke participants (N = 20) performed a proprioceptive matching task with upper limb and eye movements. A KINARM exoskeleton with eye tracking was used to assess limb and eye kinematics. The upper limb was passively moved by the robot and participants matched the location with either an arm or eye movement. Accuracy was measured as the difference between passive robot movement location and active limb matching (Hand-End Point Error) or active eye movement matching (Eye-End Point Error). ResultsWe found that individuals with stroke had significantly larger Hand (2.1×) and Eye-End Point (1.5×) Errors compared to controls. Further, we found that proprioceptive errors of the hand and eye were highly correlated in stroke participants ( r = .67, P = .001), a relationship not observed for controls. ConclusionsEye movement accuracy declined as a function of proprioceptive impairment of the more-affected limb, which was used as a proprioceptive reference. The inability to use proprioceptive information of the arm to coordinate eye movements suggests that disordered proprioception impacts integration of sensory information across different modalities. These results have important implications for how vision is used to actively guide limb movement during rehabilitation.more » « less

Abstract BackgroundAtlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are a highly migratory species ranging along continental and insular coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to their importance to regional recreational and sport fisheries, research has been focused on large-scale movement patterns of reproductively active adults in areas where they are of high economic value. As a consequence, geographically restricted focus on adults has left significant gaps in our understanding of tarpon biology and their movements, especially for juveniles in remote locations where they are common. Our study focused on small-scale patterns of movement and habitat use of juvenile tarpon using acoustic telemetry in a small bay in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. ResultsFour juvenile tarpon (80–95 cm FL) were tracked from September 2015 to February 2018, while an additional eight juveniles (61–94 cm FL) left the study area within 2 days after tagging and were not included in analysis. Four tarpon had > 78% residency and average activity space of 0.76 km2(range 0.08–1.17 km2) within Brewers Bay (1.8 km2). Their vertical distribution was < 18 m depth with occasional movements to deeper water. Activity was greater during day compared to night, with peaks during crepuscular periods. During the day tarpon used different parts of the bay with consistent overlap around the St. Thomas airport runway and at night tarpon typically remained in a small shallow lagoon. However, when temperatures in the lagoon exceeded 30 °C, tarpon moved to cooler, deeper waters outside the lagoon. ConclusionOur results, although limited to only four individuals, provide new baseline data on the movement ecology of juvenile Atlantic tarpon. We showed that juvenile tarpon had high residency within a small bay and relatively stable non-overlapping daytime home ranges, except when seasonally abundant food sources were present. Fine-scale acoustic tracking showed the effects of environmental conditions (i.e., elevated seawater temperature) on tarpon movement and habitat use. These observations highlight the need for more extensive studies of juvenile tarpon across a broader range of their distribution, and compare the similarities and differences in behavior among various size classes of individuals from small juveniles to reproductively mature adults.more » « less

Tigrini, Andrea (Ed.)Hand gesture classification is crucial for the control of many modern technologies, ranging from virtual and augmented reality systems to assistive mechatronic devices. A prominent control technique employs surface electromyography (EMG) and pattern recognition algorithms to identify specific patterns in muscle electrical activity and translate these to device commands. While being well established in consumer, clinical, and research applications, this technique suffers from misclassification errors caused by limb movements and the weight of manipulated objects, both vital aspects of how we use our hands in daily life. An emerging alternative control technique is force myography (FMG) which uses pattern recognition algorithms to predict hand gestures from the axial forces present at the skin’s surface created by contractions of the underlying muscles. As EMG and FMG capture different physiological signals associated with muscle contraction, we hypothesized that each may offer unique additional information for gesture classification, potentially improving classification accuracy in the presence of limb position and object loading effects. Thus, we tested the effect of limb position and grasped load on 3 different sensing modalities: EMG, FMG, and the fused combination of the two. 27 able-bodied participants performed a grasp and release task with 4 hand gestures at 8 positions and under 5 object weight conditions. We then examined the effects of limb position and grasped load on gesture classification accuracy across each sensing modality. It was found that position and grasped load had statistically significant effects on the classification performance of the 3 sensing modalities and that the combination of EMG and FMG provided the highest classification accuracy of hand gesture, limb position, and grasped load combinations (97.34%) followed by FMG (92.27%) and then EMG (82.84%). This points to the fact that the addition of FMG to traditional EMG control systems offers unique additional data for more effective device control and can help accommodate different limb positions and grasped object loads.more » « less
