Environmentally persistent free radicals readily form on TiO 2 but not on ZnO nanoparticles
Nanoparticles like TiO2and ZnO can form harmful, stable pollutants called EPFRs. But TiO2readily forms even at low temperatures. This finding suggests these pollutants can form in many environments.

Abstract Materials in single crystal form are often sought after because the absence of grain boundaries can result in unique properties relative to the polycrystal, but producing these materials is typically a slow and complex process. In this work, pseudo single crystals of the pseudobrookite compound CoTi2O5were synthesized by solid‐state reaction from a duplex grain mixture of CoTiO3and TiO2. The size of the crystallites was >250 µm. The transformation and subsequent microstructural evolution of the CoTi2O5was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). A novel growth mechanism was identified whereby a single crystal CoTi2O5front advances simultaneously along multiple CoTiO3/TiO2diphasic boundaries. The single crystal domains were composed of subgrains approximately 5 µm in diameter; differences in the subgrain size and misorientation were related to the growth mechanism and the initial grain size of the duplex CoTiO3–TiO2mixture. CoTi2O5is a little characterized compound, and this study represents the most significant microstructural study of CoTi2O5to date. The findings may be applied to similar pseudobrookite compounds such as MgTi2O5and Al2TiO5.more » « less

It is shown that in the formamidinium (FA) lead iodide/titania heterostructure α‐HC(NH2)2PbI3/TiO2the organic layer‐mediated interface, i.e., FAI/TiO2, can induce photovoltaic diode effect via positive bias poling. The band gap of the heterostructure is reduced to zero upon the positive poling due to combined effects of ion diffusion, rotation of organic moieties, and ferroelectric redistribution. The perovskite part in the organic layer‐mediated interface FAI/TiO2gives rise to a strong polarization of 18.69 μC cm−2, compared to that (0.89 μC cm−2) in the inorganic layer‐mediated interface PbI2/TiO2. The strong polarization of the organic layer‐mediated interface is closely related to the diode effect associated with the reordering of the ferroelectric polarization and charge distribution, as a consequence of the mobility and rotation of organic moieties in FAI/TiO2upon the positive bias poling. The latter effect also provides an explanation on why the FAPbI3‐based devices can largely reduce the scanning hysteresis in theJ–Vcurves (Yang et al.,Science2015,348, 1234) and why the organic layer‐mediated halide perovskite heterostructure is one of the most promising candidates for the fabrication of highly efficient solar cells or optoelectronic devices.more » « less

A heterogeneously integrated InGaN laser diode (LD) on Si is proposed as a path toward visible wavelength photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on Si. Herein, InGaN films are vertically stacked on a TiO2waveguide (WG) fabricated on a Si wafer by bonding. In the light propagation direction, it is composed of a hybrid InGaN/TiO2section, a TiO2WG, an adiabatic taper, and mirrors that can form a cavity. As the refractive index of GaN is well matched with that of TiO2, the optical transverse mode extends to both the GaN and TiO2in a hybrid mode. Modes between a hybrid InGaN/TiO2and a pure TiO2WG can transfer with an adiabatic taper structure. The coupling loss is calculated to be less than 0.5 dB with fairly short taper length of 78 μm and tip width of 200 nm. GaN substrate removal and bonding are critical fabrication steps of this LD and PIC. The substrate removal is successfully done by photoelectrochemical etching. Although direct bonding of GaN wafers with thermal oxide on Si is successful, GaN epitaxial wafers are more difficult. An implication and remedy of this is discussed in terms of surface roughness of GaN epitaxial film.more » « less

Abstract The concentration of dopamine (DA) and tyrosine (Tyr) reflects the condition of patients with Parkinson's disease, whereas moderate paracetamol (PA) can help relieve their pain. Therefore, real‐time measurements of these bioanalytes have important clinical implications for patients with Parkinson's disease. However, previous sensors suffer from either limited sensitivity or complex fabrication and integration processes. This work introduces a simple and cost‐effective method to prepare high‐quality, flexible titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films with highly reactive (001)‐facets. The as‐fabricated TiO2film supported by a carbon cloth electrode (i.e., TiO2–CC) allows excellent electrochemical specificity and sensitivity to DA (1.390 µA µM−1 cm−2), Tyr (0.126 µA µM−1 cm−2), and PA (0.0841 µA µM−1 cm−2). More importantly, accurate DA concentration in varied pH conditions can be obtained by decoupling them within a single differential pulse voltammetry measurement without additional sensing units. The TiO2–CC electrochemical sensor can be integrated into a smart diaper to detect the trace amount of DA or an integrated skin‐interfaced patch with microfluidic sampling and wireless transmission units for real‐time detection of the sweat Try and PA concentration. The wearable sensor based on TiO2–CC prepared by facile manufacturing methods holds great potential in the daily health monitoring and care of patients with neurological disorders.more » « less
