Title: Informative Utility Value Intervention: Assignments Designed to Promote Students’ Personal Connections With Chemistry Topics Based on Their Career Goals
Student motivation within a STEM course is dependent on their perceived relevance and utility of the topics learned. This paper presents an Informative Utility Value Intervention (IUVI) designed to promote perceptions of utility. The IUVI was designed as a series of assignments for general chemistry students in large lecture courses, but the method can be adapted to other science disciplines. The intervention begins by establishing a baseline of students’ utility-value of chemistry then scaffolds new connections to their field of interest. The scaffold includes directing students to published articles demonstrating real-world connections between topics they are learning and their career interests. Student responses indicate they were able to make connections between the topic and their career interests and they perceived the articles as relevant to their career interests.  more » « less

  1. Chemistry instruction should provide students a rationale for appreciating chemistry as a useful discipline, which is a particular challenge given the diverse student interests within introductory chemistry courses. In this study, we introduce and evaluate an interactive assignment, called an Informative Utility Value Intervention (IUVI), meant to improve students’ perceptions of the utility of chemistry. IUVI provides students with web-based articles describing how chemistry topics are relevant to the students’ chosen career interests. IUVI was administered to second-semester general chemistry students with a quasiexperimental study design in which one section from each instructor was given the intervention, and pre-intervention measures were used to account for potential differences between groups. The results indicate that students who received the intervention reported higher perceptions of the utility of chemistry at the end of the semester and higher scores on a common final exam than students who did not receive the intervention. Results from a structural equation model indicated the IUVI was associated with improved utility perceptions and final exam scores; however, these improvements were potentially independent of each other. Therefore, the theoretical explanation that improved perceptions of utility value resulted in improved academic performance could not be supported. Overall, IUVI offers an effective and highly portable intervention which can be adopted and adapted by instructors to promote students’ utility perceptions of chemistry.

  2. Although designed to prepare students for future coursework or to fulfill basic degree requirements, introductory math courses often serve as barriers to student success. In two double-blind randomized field experiments, we tested the efficacy of a utility-value intervention on improving community college students’ perceived math relevance and achievement in introductory math courses. Building upon prior research, we examined whether the intervention particularly benefited first-generation and racially marginalized students. Study 1 (N = 696) was conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic and within in-person classrooms, whereas Study 2 (N = 1,318) was conducted during the pandemic and within virtual learning environments. Across Studies 1 and 2, students in the utility-value condition benefited more in terms of their perceived relevance compared to their peers in the control condition. Additionally, in both studies, math relevance mediated the effects of the intervention on math grades. In Study 2, with a larger sample, the positive effect of the intervention on math relevance was more pronounced for first-generation students. Our findings imply that community colleges could significantly improve students’ academic experiences by investing in motivation-enhancing activities such as utility-value interventions in introductory math courses. This strategy could especially help first-generation students’ academic achievement and retention rates.

    Introductory courses are often designed to cover a range of topics with the intent to offer students exposure to the given discipline as preparation to further their study in the same or related disciplines. Unfortunately, students in these courses are often presented with an overwhelming amount of information that may not support their formation of a usable coherent network of knowledge. In this study we conducted a mixed-method sequential exploratory study with students co-enrolled in General Chemistry II and Introductory Biology I to better understand what students perceived to be the “take-home” messages of these courses (i.e., core ideas) and the connections between these courses. We found that students identified a range of ideas from both courses; further analysis of students’ explanations and reasoning revealed that, when students talked about their chemistry ideas, they were more likely to talk about them as having predictive and explanatory power in comparison with reasons provided for their biology big ideas. Furthermore, students identified a number of overlapping ideas between their chemistry and biology courses, such as interactions, reactions, and structures, which have the potential to be used as a starting place to support students building a more coherent network of knowledge.

  4. ABSTRACT As educators, we should not assume that students are progressing toward intended STEM careers simply because they have persisted and received a STEM degree. In addition to learning biology content and scientific skills, students need guidance in making optimal career choices. In this study, we present seven career development modules designed specifically to motivate students to consider their successes as scientists and to consider applying their biological knowledge and scientific skills to a range of biology careers. These modules highlight the value and the utility of a biology degree and are, therefore, designed to increase students’ self-confidence as well as their science and biology identities. The career development modules presented here are easy to implement and, in our experience, encourage engagement and class discussions. Our analyses confirm that these modules collectively increase student science and biology identities, two predictors for entry into STEM careers.

  5. This study aimed to find how IT-related hobbies and interests impacted students’ educational and career decision-making. Methods: As part of a six-year-long, ATE-funded study of IT students at Ivy Tech Community College, our team conducted semi-structured, phenomenological interviews. These interviews were analyzed using keyword searches and a combined inductive-deductive approach to coding to explore how IT-related hobbies and interests interacted with other personal characteristics to inform student decisionmaking. Findings: Our team identified a potential link between early IT interest, IT-related hobbies, and persistence in IT education and careers. Many participants in the study had a moment of clarity where they realized that their IT hobby could become their career, the “hobby-to-career reckoning.” Contributions: This piece explores the potential connection between IT interests/hobbies and student outcomes within the field of IT while exploring the different social factors that may impact student decision-making and the role of the hobby-to-career reckoning in the decision-making process. This piece will give practitioners and researchers insight into how early interest in IT and IT-related hobbies may impact student decision-making about IT educational programs and careers.
